Regular Cab
Strength:
Good looking truck. Best colour you could get in a car. Dark Blue. Premium Stereo system, if you want to pay a little more money. Nice interior.
Weakness:
Almost everything. It is the weakest auto I've ever driven. The 4 cyls. on other models actually get you from point A to B without hastle. With 119 hp people actually honk at me on city streets to get out of their way. Gas Milage is awful. I get 16 city, 18 highway. I guess its supposed to be 22/27, but I've never see anything like that. The ride is awful. I know its a truck, but all the other trucks I've riden in hasn't been this bad. I hear rattles, thumps, all sorts of interesting noises. Horrible build quality. Horrible resale value. I had to have a new clutch installed after 32,000 miles! Awful truck. I'll never buy Ford again. Never buy American again for that matter. Dad has a 91 Honda Accord w/ 200,000 miles on it and original clutch. Foreign build quality is awful. I'm trying to sell my truck after 77 months and no one wants it. Similar Products Used: Toyota Tacoma- Not even close. Everything is ten times better on a Taco. |

Strength:
economy, looks good, thick skinned unlike Chevy truck
Weakness:
the turn signal/hi-beam/windshield wiper switch keeps going haywire The biggest complaint is the turn signal/windshield wiper switch/hi-beam switch. The wipers keep coming on without warning and eventually the hi-beams totally go out. The dealer replaced under warranty. Not only did the '97 ranger I owned do this, but the '95 Ranger as well AND the '99 B-series (essentially a Ranger). You think Ford would get the hint. Similar Products Used: owned 95 ranger and more recently 99 Mazda B-series all compare equally |

4X4 SC 4.0 AUTO
Strength:
GOES ANYWHERE IN ANY WEATHER, GREAT TOW VEHICLE, COMFORTABLE, GOOD ALL AROUND TRUCK. USED IT MANY TIMES TO PULL MY FORKLIFT OUT OF MUD AND SNOW AROUND MY WAREHOUSE. OVERLOADED AND PULLED TRAILERS THAT I KNOW EXCEEDED IT'S DESIGNED CAPACITY WITHOUT PROBLEMS. HAD IT BURRIED IN SNOW AND MUD UP TO THE AXLES AND NEVER BEEN STUCK. CURIOSITY LED ME TO INSTALL AN HOUR METER ON THE TRUCK. 50,000 MILES EQUALS 1700 HOURS RUNNING. I MADE IT TO OVER 300,000 ON MY LAST FORD BY CHANGING FLUIDS AND RUNNING ONLY SYNTHETICS. I WILL AGAIN SEE IF THIS TRUCK WILL LIVE AS LONG.
Weakness:
HAD A 98 3.0 4X4 SC THAT WAS REPURCHASED BY FORD BECAUSE OF ENGINE DETONATION THAT COULD NOT BE FIXED. I WAS TOLD THAT THAT TRUCK WAS 1 OF 3 REPURCHASED TO FIND 3.0 ENGINE PROBLEMS. FORD SENT AN EMPTY TRACTOR TRAILER CAR CARRIER JUST FOR MY TRUCK TO TAKE IT BACK TO DETROIT. I WAS VERY PLEASED TO OBTAIN MY 99 FOR INVOICE DIFFERENCE ABOVE MY 98. FUEL MILEAGE IS POOR WITH 4.0 AND 4.10'S BUT I DON'T CARE. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I LEARNED FROM MY 98 THAT IF YOU BUY A NEW VEHICLE, GET EVERY OPTION. I WAS GIVEN A NEW START BY FORD AND AM MUCH HAPPIER WITH A FULLY LOADED TRUCK THAN THE NEARLY LOADED MODEL. AFTER ABOUT 3 YEARS, THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE PRICE IS IRRELEVANT. TREAT YOUR DEALER WITH RESPECT AND DON'T BE A WHINING BABY WANTING EVERYTHING FOR FREE AND YOUR EXPERIENCE WILL BE MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE. I EXPECT THINGS TO BREAK, I BREAK THEM. I BOUGHT A TRUCK AND IT HAS BEEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE USED LIKE A TRUCK. A GOOD TRUCK WILL SERVE ME WELL. THIS HAS BEEN A GOOD TRUCK. Similar Products Used: HAD 92 CHEVROLET W/T 4X4 GOOD TRUCK |

and '99 Ranger
Strength:
Nice looking, fun to drive, nice off-road capabilities, and reliability.
Weakness:
No leather seats. I've owned two (a '91 and a '99) Rangers and have never had a single problem w/ them. Recommend the 4.0L V6 and 4x4 off road package. I drive it off-road, skiing, in the city, and cross country w/ no problems. Will always own one. |

Ranger XLT
Strength:
Looks great in the hills and in traffic, solid "truck like" ride, great in the snow and mud, good gear ratio for turning big tires and 4X4'n. Just an over-all fun truck to have.
Weakness:
Anything smaller than the 3.0 L V6 and your asking for trouble, expecially in the mountians (snowboarding at 10,000 ft). Somewhat slow on the streets, and the gearing makes it sound like your in 4X low all the time. Get bigger tires, they're cooler than the stock tires. I gave up my '87 Ranger 4X4 ex cab for the 99 version. It rocks. The ride and motor performance have been vastly improved and the styling is way cool. Don't expect to buy one and get a car like ride, it's a truck folks, it's gona ride like one. I'm not much for interior amenities, but the CD player is good to have. The 3.0 L is not a bad motor, but I'd rather have the 4.0 L here in Denver. I can fit two motocross bikes in the bed rather easily, but with little room for the coolers. I do everything and go everywhere in my Ranger. My 87 was a great off-roader with stock equipment; when driven smart. I'm sure my '99 will do just as good. As far a building it up (lift kits, role bars, etc.), there is a huge selection of companies that offer all kinds of goodies for the Ranger. If you want a good lookn' truck and have the time to get out and play-Get a Ranger now! Similar Products Used: Slower than the Toyotas off the line, but better gearing. Less bed room and motor than the Dakotas, but better handling. Just plain cooler than the S-10 |

plenty of power, 4.9l will never fail(not yet anyways)145,000 miles and it don't smoke or burn any oil, manual 4spd tranny will pull a mountain, 4wd is awesome, the brakes are exellent also
Weakness:
needs more leaf springs, 1 barrel carb? also a little noisy in the morning, but once it is warm you can't even hear it run exellent truck, not too bad on gas, i would reccomend it to any one who is looking to buy a fullsize truck Similar Products Used: blows the dors off of an 1995 chevy 1500 with a 305, 1093 chevt 1500 with a 4.3 liter |

Strength:
Handles great, has 2.3 engine always starts and runs fine. Vehicle has 112,000 miles.
Weakness:
Previous owner had to have transmission rebuilt. Five months after purchase 5 speed transmission went out again. I had transmission shop rebuild transmission and now 12,000 miles later it is going out again. I have been told that this model and year vehicle had problems with the transmissions. It is an expensive transmission to rebuild $1300. I would recommend the vehicle, but not with a 5 speed Trannny. Similar Products Used: I have never had transmission problems with any vehicle and many have had upwards of 130,000 miles. No stress only road miles. |

XLT Regular Cab 4X4
Strength:
Good looking truck, decent power, comfortable for the size.
Weakness:
The 2.9L is a little weak on the mountains here in WV and the tranny has a phantom noise in 1st & Reverse on occasion. I don't like the wimpy push button 4X4. If I'm going to use it I like to know it is engaged A great truck all around. Perfect in the snow. Would suggest any one wanting a sporty dependable truck to consider the Ranger. Similar Products Used: By far better than the S-10, Tacoma, and Dakota. Except the power problem |

Ranger Splash Supercab 4x4 Offroad
Strength:
Good looks, smooth ride, adequate acceleration and towing capacity
Weakness:
It's falling apart This vehicle has been nothing but trouble. At around 25-30000, engine died and was replaced, front suspension replaced, both window motors replaced, cd player replaced - and a million little things as well. It's been an absolute nightmare. I had to spend $1300 for the extended warranty, as there was no way that I was going to keep this thing without an extended warranty. Well, guess what, Ford designs their warranties to screw you. My transmission just died (at 52000 miles, mind you) and I'm out a few grand - it's in the shop as I write this. I already have to pay $140 for 1.5 hours of inspection fees. Can you believe that? Std Cab
Strength:
Powerful for a onld carbed V6 on a heavy truck. Beat on it pretty bad and it kept going. Off road it was GREAT. No major body rust or parts falling off. 4wd never faield, trans never failed, engine itself runs good when it wants. I slid on ice sideways into a tree at about 35-40 mph and hit the driver door dead on. It did a damn good job keeping me alive too. That was the final day of that truck since it was totalled.
Weakness:
The carb system on this engine SUCKS! It is "electronicly controlled" and doesn't work for crap. In the winter, I would have to let it sit on high idle for about 5 minutes before I could drive it or it would stall when I stop. The gas gauge also didn't work. Other than that, it was fine. Like I said, the only thing I had a problem with all the time was that stupid carb. No matter how many times you fix it or think it is fixed, it screws everything up again. The auto-high idle never worked right and the choke would never work right either. But other than that, it was a great truck.
