A lot of people give this truck a bad rating. And they may be right but I think the competition is worse. In the snowbelt of the North East MOST people plow with the Superduty. You don't see many Chevys or Dodges plowing commercially. And you NEVER see anybody really working their precious Japanese truck. I wonder why?

Well this is my second Ford 250 deisle . I love the trucks but they don't love me, my first was a 92 extended cab 7.3, at 124000 miles the tranny went out paid $2500 at a transmission shop for rebuild. 5000 miles later it went out again ( I suspect it was the shop) got that repaired, I 2 years ago bought a 1999 250 crew cab 4wd, now that one at 126000 miles tranny is shot. the shop told me they thought there had been work done already on it at sometime, this time $2600. Ford needs to address these tranny issues. I love the trucks. but it is getting to costly to keep, I have never over heated either truck nor ever towed anything. mostly all highway driving.

Weakness:

Poorly built truck. Am trading off for another as soon as transmission is fixed. Will not be a FORD!!

This is my second Ford Truck. Traded in 1996 (by 137,000 miles tons of front end/engine problems) for the 2002 with 12,000 miles. What a nightmare this truck has been! Truck is generally driven to and from work, pick up kids and 1 - 2 times per year, tow our camp trailer. Had this truck 3 months and front end/brakes/wheel bearings all need repair, 4 different times. Ford dealer implied because of where we bought it, that was the problem. Ford did completely rebuild the front end, finally, with a lot of nagging and pushing. Next, diesel engine sensors go out. Now at 59,000, the transmission is shot. Bought the extended warranty against my better judgement. Now Ultimate Warranty doesn't want to repair the transmission or pay for the towing. My warranty is for 7 years or 125,000 miles. They say towing was good for 2 years and no longer. Not in contract anywhere. Took the truck to a local transmission shop, they said the transmission needs to be replaced, warranty company said no way. Take it to Aamco, they are their preferred transmission shop. Called Aamco, described the problem, was told they would tell the warranty company the SAME. Both Transmission shops and FORD shop will not touch truck due to liability issues with replacing internal parts. Have been told by MANY transmission shops/mechanics that ford is not putting the transmission in they need to, to do what the truck is designed for, they overheat and need to replaced at about 60 - 65,000 miles.

Strength:

1. Engine - 5.8HO pulls wonderfully
2. Trannsmission - Bulletproof C6
3. Durability - Truly Built Ford Tough
4. Frame - Try bendin one of those
5. Suspension - Very Heavy Duty
6. Brakes - Very Good Stopping Power

Weakness:

1. Fuel Economy - I average 5mpg in town, 9 when on highway

2. Poor Tire Wear - TTB Suspension wears tires down quickly

3. Electrical - Weird Wiring
4. Oil Leaks - Rear Main Seal Leaks
5. Axle Seal - Leaks Gear Oil

The 1986 Ford F-250 is a true workhorse. My truck is equipped with the 351W HO V8 engine, C6 3-Speed Automatic, New Process Transfercase, and Dana 60 axles. This truck has a little over 160,000 miles on the odometor and 100,000 of those miles were all towing miles. This truck will pull a trailer like none other. My grandfather used it for years to pull gooseneck trailers with. The transmission still shifts perfect thanks to consistent 15,000 miles fluid and filter changes. The engine pulls very strong as well. We have had almost 12,000 pounds on a gooseneck trailer once and it still pulled it with out breaking a sweat. When it comes to getting in the mud, you might as well put it into 4-low because of the rear open differential when in 2wd is basically useless. I have yet to become stuck yet, but I have been hung up in 2wd many times. As to my body, the bed is starting to rust pretty bad around the fenders, but for only getting washed and waxed once year it is holding up very well. I would recomend this truck to any farmer or to anybody who cant afford the prices of newer trucks for pulling or hauling a large amount of weight.

Power, plenty of room, offroad capability! Holds retail value very well!

Weakness:

high maintenence, minor electrical problems, ugly interior.

Well..... It was a 2001, f-250, EXT cab, 7.3L Diesel, Auto 63000mi. I bouth this truck in the summer of 04. It was an OK truck. It had more power than chevy, dodge. but the maintenence was insane. 2- tranny, complete rebuilt front end, 1- hydraulic pump, 4- wheel bearings, 1- power window motor and both locking hubs($350 a pair). Luckily waranty covered about 80% of that.

The truck was a good work truck, but was pretty plane inside. But the exterior was pretty good looking and easy to keep clean.

The 4x4 was pretty nice, Lock the hubs and put it in 4wd and it will get through some pretty hairy stuff! It drove pretty good, it was kind of hard to keep the front end aligned but it still drove pretty good.

I just got rid of it and to be frank I wont miss It! I wont say it was a mistake to buy it but, my warning to the next buyer is !!GET A WARRANTY!!

Truly a hunk of junk, poor gas mileage

I am thrilled to finally tell the world about what an absolute HUNK OF JUNK this thing has been and still is. I've been driving this truck for over six years and I'm sure I'll never be able to remember all the problems I've had with it, but I'll try. First of all, over 13,000 dollars worth of work was done under warranty. I have 140,000 miles on it and I'm on my SEVENTH set of front rotors due to warpage, and the ones on it right now are warped again. Just today it started missing at low rpms too and almost stalled when I was at a light. I'll have to take it in for that soon too. But back to my list. MANY 4wd problems - not engaging not DISengaging. This was worked on several times. They still don't automatically engage, but I can live with that (guess I have to). In cold weather the drivers window wouldn't go down and finally broke completely TWICE. Squeaky leafe springs from the get-go. NEEDED A NEW ENGINE AT 50,000 miles due to a porous casting which in turn cause constant oil leakage. Had a constant banging that I could feel and hear under my feet as I drove. Dealer couldn't find it BUT I DID and it was a loose bolt for the front stabilizer bar (came that way from the factory). Some kind of sensor went in the trans causing an almost undriveable condition etc, etc. There's more, but really, who cares. The point is that this thing is a real heaper. It was in the shop so much during the first year that it became a joke with my co-workers and paint store employees since they constantly saw me pulling up with loaner vehicles. We dubbed it the Super Junky, which is still what I call it to this very day. It's only because it's paid off and I only need libilty insurance (ie it's cheap to drive, except for the 11 mpg) that I still have it. My previous truck was an 87 F250 with the 302 and I had it for 12 years and drove it for 230,000 miles with hardly a problem. That's why I bought another Ford. BUT NEVER AGAIN

Warranty could use work- just like their design and transmissions

A little more FYI before buying a Ford Super-Out-Of-Duty or any other Ford product. If you read the warranty (as I was told to do by a Ford Rep) It states that if the motor, transmission, or any major mechanical component on the vehicle should fail, it will be replaced with a remanufactured part, even if the vehicle is less than one year old. Our transmission failed within the first year of ownership and was replaced with a remanufactured (yes they already had remans on the shelf). MY question to Ford was ignored at first, but when I stood firm and demanded an answer, they stated that if major components on a vehicle (motor, trans., etc.) fail within the first year under normal use, this is not considered a design flaw. I would like to know what is?
