Strength:

I've put 50,000 miles on this van already in 18 months, and I've not had a single problem with it. I love the way it drives and handles on the city streets and the higway. I traded in an '82 E-100 that I had bought new and had driven it over 350,000 miles. I really believe you can't get any better than the Ford van.

Weakness:

I see no weaknesses.

It is by the far the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned (I've owned in the last 40 years 18 vehicles of assorted makes).

Strength:

It still runs

Weakness:

Very unreliable

This van has had problems shortly after I purchased it new. Problems include: rotors warped at 30k miles, rear fluid leaking TWICE at 30k miles - dealer replaced seals on two different occassions, now it's leaking again! Blower motor switch burnt out twice and melted the plastic knob - occured at about 35k miles & 60k miles. Water leaks under matt in back of driver seat - can't figure out where the hell it's coming from. Van shakes when going over 60mph - dealer could't figure it out and 3 other service stations that specialize in front ends can't figure it out either. Most recent problem at 100k miles is the alternator just went. I wonder what will be next? I also own a Nissan pathfinder and BMW - HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS THUS FAR IN 3 YEARS!! the only positive thing I can say about this Ford van is that it still runs. I use this van for work everday and have to worry what will break next - I take very good care of it but it has proven to be unreliable.

If only toyota or Nissan made a work van I wouldn't have to worry about breaking down.

Strength:

What I like about this van is its size, level of comfert, and appeal.

Weakness:

It does suck gas a little and parking it

when ever me and my friends go out we take my van because everybody seems to fall in love with it when ever they sit in it, it has 4 captain chairs and a bench/bed in the back which are super comfy, also since the van is a conversion it has a pretty cool paint scheme, redish/purple with gold graphics. It gets alot of attention when ever I cruise it, the interior is a compination of brown and tan velor, it also has tint and curtains for extra privacy. If you do get this year van I suggest you convert it to a two barrel carb, mine had, originaly, a 4barrel 351 H.O. It now has a two barrel with a two barrel intake manifold or spider. the mileage went from 9mpg highway to a decent 18mpg highway. I would also suggest finding one with a dual tank it helps alot when you take it on road trips

Strength:

Cargo room and gas mileage of 17.5 average. Dual gas tanks on long trips cuts down on fuel stops and time wasted. Great air conditioner!

Weakness:

Sway in the front end. The engine can be a bit sluggish accelerating up hill.

This is an extended cargo, no frills van with a 302 on the road 600 to 1000 miles a week. Bought new by the owner of a company I worked for and was driven hard by some of the drivers. I now use it in my business. The ride is very comfortable for a plain van as I drive it for an average of 8 hours two days a week making deliveries. Has over 400k miles and the only problem is that the brakes warp at least twice a year. Only parts that have been replaced exhaust manifolds, radiator (recored),thermostat, brakes, muffler and fuel senders on dual tanks. Not bad for so many miles! I find it to be very reliable.

Strength:

Runs and runs! It is reliable and safe. The inline six won't quit. The tranny is tough as nails. It does well at highway speed but won't go too much faster. Its built with power to spare and it's put into torque, not speed. Just what a van should be, a workhorse.

Weakness:

The body had rust on the surface. I sanded down the rust with an electric sander. I used Rustoliun Rust Killer to neutralixe the remaining rust. I then applied Rustolium primer (several coats) and it's doing fine. The rust on the floor board will be fixed as mentioned in "Overall Impression."

I bought my 1988 Econoline 250 from a private individual in March 2001. It had marginal surface rust on the body but was easily fixed. I recently looked under the driver's side floor mat and found rust. It has made a few small hole. I will sand it down, cut it out, prepare the hole, and patch it with painted sheet metal.

The engine is a 4.9 Liter straight 6 with fuel injection. It gets just over 12 MPG in the city and has 170,000 miles. The valves are noisy when you accelerate but other owners say this is normal. The van does great on the highway. The crankshaft bearing seals are worn and it leaks a little oil. Adding a little oil now and then doesn't bother me. Overall, the van is very reliable. Age does take its toll, but the problems I've mentioned above are easily correctable and don't affect the van's safety.

I am avoiding major problems now by nit-picking and taking the time to fix small problems. It is relatively inexpensive to do this (as compared to buying a new vehicle). I recommend others do this too. A lot of attention, time, and work keeps a good vehicle good.

This is "my first car." I am going to keep this van running as long as it can kept safe and reliable. But when I do need a new vehicle, it will be a Ford Van!

Size and Storage is great.

Weakness:

Braking system and heating System

I test drove every Van on the market. This Van drove like a Lincoln, smooth and did not rattle like a truck. I am disappointed in some things.
I have had the Heating system replaced twice, the third time the Service Department told me that I have to clean the Heater Coil. I have had three set of brakes on it and I am on my third set of tires. The third set, I decided to spend money on a quality tire. I have a shimmy in the steering wheel. I have replaced the rotors twice on the drivers side, but the problem continues, especially when I brake. The Service Department Manager said I should expect this, because it is a heavy vehicle. I disagree. I love this Van, but I don't like the upkeep on tires and brakes.
