Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 2wd
Strength:
Gobs of Hemi power, 5 speed auto, roomy, good looks, cup holders, improved dealer service from old, priced lower than Chevy,Ford, and Toyota. 4 wheel disks, high quality build and interior, Handles like a sports car even with a load. Can't emphasize enough how well these large trucks handle. Makes my Expedition seem like a Conestoga Wagon.
Weakness:
Throttle lag(fixable), warping rotors( but Dodge replaced pads and rotors) 20" tires like to follow crown of road, 12-13 mpg with 600lb load. 20" tires expensive. A little noisy. Camper and tires have a lot to do with that though. Took a chance and bought another Dodge PU after transmission and rear end problems in my 1998 Ram. So far I am not sorry I bought it. A totally better truck in every way. Hemi with 20" and LS means awesome traction. Best looking truck and most solidly built as well. I can't see myself driving anything else. Similar Products Used: 1998 Ram 4x4 5.2l. The Hemi gets better mileage! Chevy PU. A rattle trap with hokey interior and the new ones are plain ugly. Nice ride and power though. Ford F150. Even a 2wd wouldn't fit in my garage with a camper. Too high a bed wall. Doesn't Ford realize some of us still use pickups for work! Hear Fords quality has really gone downhill. Almost every Expedition has rear end problems! That kept me away from Ford because they haven't fixed the problems. |

Strength:
Powerful engine, with superb gas mileage. I am getting better than 15 MPG in town, and 20 MPG on the highway, doing 75-80 MPH. That is INCREDIBLE for this machine! Dodge solved the problem with brake rotors over their entry 2003 Hemi, and they put 2 cat converters on this model, which probably helps the gas mileage.
Weakness:
None that I can tell so far. I have had it just shy of a year, and have almost 10,000 miles on it, and it has only been in for oil changes. Gotta love that. Bought this truck, my fourth Dodge, in December 2003. The best one yet. I love the roominess, the classy, rugged looks, and the improvements over the 2003 model. My dealer stands behind the product, and treats me respectfully, and as a friend, which is important in the customer-dealer relationship. I have been to them four times, which should say something. This truck is definitely a culmination of years of development. You can just feel how solid it is when you close the doors, or go over a bump in the road. The mileage is fantastic for a truck with its horsepower and torque. I would never buy another brand of truck. Not now. I am hooked. This truck has the Daimler influence, for sure. Paint The truck just turned 217,000 miles. 5.9L V-8 engine with automatic transmission. It has been a great vehicle, best I've ever had. Had to replace the fuel pump at 109,000 miles, the evaporator core for the air conditioning at 120,000 miles and the radiator at 190,000 miles. Have had to replace brake pads about every 60,000 miles, but that's it. Truck still has no rattles or squeaks. Only complaint is that the paint started failing on the top of the cab and top of the hood about 8 months ago. Otherwise, it has been a great truck. |

Strength:
Very easy and comfortable to drive. Handles nice. Really comfortable interior. Plenty of space. I always liked the looks of the truck. Plenty of towing power with the 5.9 L
Weakness:
Its a typical full sized truck fuel hog. You don't buy this vehicle for fuel economy. Theft of vehicle is far to easy. No longer dependable after 100,000 km's. Rough riding. Unreliable and poor quality servicing from Chrysler Dealerships. Purchased the vehicle new. Up to August of last year, my truck had been really good to me. The only problem I experienced was the battery went mysteriously dead on me, which resulted in the alternator and A/C compressor being replaced, all under warranty. As well, after 25000 km's the shocks needed replacing. Badly. But silly me bought gabriel shocks instead of going through warranty. Those lasted till 78,000. Then i got LTV shocks, which were way to hard. Ended up getting Monroe Sensatrac's which made a big difference. I put in Bosch Platinum spark plugs at 80,000 Km. So then comes end of August 2003. The truck died on me at 92000 km coming back from vacation. Got towed. The Bosch plugs were garbage. 02 sensors were replaced, throttle body cleaned. April of 2004, the truck dies on me literraly after it turns over 100,000 km. And this is no lie, I am seroius. It got towed to a dealer (was on vacation again). The replace spark plugs. What a joke. Chrsyler reimbursed me some of the cost. It dies again the next day coming home. But it made it home after I gave the truck some cooling time. I took it to stupid Capital Dodge Jeep here in Edmonton . They joy rided it around for awhile, trying to make it repeat itself and said yeah it may be the gas pump. We need to do more tests. I didnt have time for their crap, so I just drove it figuring I can make it die. The truck was stolen out of my driveway June 21. And was recovered 4 days later. The cop told me Dodge Trucks are easy to steal. All you need is a butterknife to unlock it. Just go between the door handle casing and the door metal, and your in. The ignition switch fell out of the stearing column. After the dealer did they're thing, a week later the truck died. Indeed it was the fuel pump. $800 to replace. After all this, the truck idle's rough and there is a growing knocking/pinging sound coming from the engine. Not to sure what the theif's did. Took it to Captial Dodge, spent $110 for a lousy computer test. Everything is fine. Sure it is. You don't get much for your money from the service department these days. All they can do is hook it up to the computer. Beyond that, the mechanics don't know a thing. So at this point I don't know what to do next with the truck. It just seems to be getting worse. That or its just been bad luck. Maybe its time to dump it and go to a Japan Car. As a whole I do like the truck and have enjoyed owning and driving it. It was always good to me up until this past year. Now it seems like age is catching up to it. The bad is starting to outweigh the good with this truck. Which is sad because I do really like this truck. And over the past year watching this stuff unfold has been hard. I have taken care of this vehicle for 5 years, and then this all happens. I give the truck a fair rating cause I like the truck. But unfortunately I don't know what to expect next from this vehicle. Similar Products Used: 1991 Dodge Dakota 3.9L V6 |

Nice to look at, great truck if the transmission doesn't give out like most of these trucks do.
Weakness:
Transmission prone to early failure due to poor lubrication, so I have been told. Porley built truck at 63000 miles had to replace transmission, passenger mirror had to be repaired it floped around like a wet noodle. Chrome grill is fading, the black plastic trim turned to a faded blue. Dealership says the fuel pump will need to be replaced very soon. Cracking noise in dash while driving. Truck has never been off road towed heavy loads or wrecked. |

Not the best gas milage. Having owned nothing but Ford trucks, I took a chance on a Dodge truck. After two years, all I can say is " what took me so long"? My truck has a major lift kit, roll bar, off road lights, super swampers, etc. The 318 engine has proven very reliable and powerful, considering the huge tires and lift. I have never had one problem with the truck. Never. I have taken it off road through dunes, fire roads, river crossings, and desert races against super stock trucks. I am not a Dodge fanatic, but after this truck, I will buy no other truck brand! Similar Products Used: Ford, Ford, and Ford. |

When you press the accelerator there is no hesitation. I love the power this truck has. Gas mileage isn't too hateful if you can keep your foot off the floor.
Weakness:
Slightly noisy in the cabin and the seats don't fit a short person Bought a 1995 Dodge Ram 1/2 ton and have drove the wheels off of it. I had such good luck with it, although a bit doggy, I thought I'd purchase another Dodge Ram but with more power so I got the hemi. With all the torque of the hemi, I was reluctant to purchase a 1/2 ton so I got the 3/4 ton. Similar Products Used: 1995 Dodge Ram 1/2 ton |

Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Quad Cab
Strength:
Hemi power (with no load). Looks tough. Crew cab box is 1/2 foot longer than Chevy or Ford. Nice big clamshell storage for stuff.
Weakness:
Noisy, leaky, rough-riding. Looks tough, but it ain't. Bad mpg. 20 inch tires made for cars. Back seats are bolt upright and uncomfortable. I get a new 4x4 truck or SUV every year. Haven't had a Dodge truck since early 80s. Both were load-hauling, rough, noisy farm trucks with few amenities. In 2003, they are still that way compared to Chevy and Ford (they do not seem to have quite the load capacity as before). Driving 60 mph into a 25 mph wind sucks the top of the door frames from the body--my 87 F150 still doesn't do that! Dust leaks in everywhere. Dodge simply doesn't have the creature comforts Ford and Chevy come standard with. The Hemi is great fun with no load: high HP, so-so torque. Not the best for hard pulling, fades fast with a 5,000 lbs load. Gas mileage is dismal at 11.8 over 35,000 miles. Must be the Hemi and 3.92 gears. 20 inch tires were a mistake. They are P-rated (passenger car) and not up to gravel roads, shocks, and loads. Blew 2 aleady--expensive. No one makes a 20 inch true truck tire for it either. Have the posi rear end--a must. Light weight lends to getting stuck easily. I use my 4x4 F150 (no posi) in my muddy winter feedlot. Wouldn't dare take the posi Ram in the same places. Guess there was a reason it was $6,000 less than the comparable Chevy or Ford. Similar Products Used: Suburbans, an Excursion, F150s, (and even an old IHC 1/2 ton). |
