Model Reviewed: S10 Extended Cab LS

Strength:

4.3 engine and transmission are unbeatable. Instrumentation leaves nothing, nothing to be desired. Very tight and sturdy body. Easy enter and exit -- just the right height off the ground. Got 31,000 on it, and absolutely no problems.

Weakness:

None

Love this truck. Got it new for a great price with my company's discount, and it's got every possible extra. I've got three newish vehicles and often prefer to drive this one to work every day. Lurches like a panther when you give it the gas. Ford Ranger has a similarly powered truck, but the Chevy leaves it in the dust...I know, done it several times. Interior layout is perfect, sound system and A/C are outstanding. The power locks and windows are a real plus, too. It drives tight, and gives a nice, cozy feel...know that's subjective, but one feels safe and cozy in this vechicle.

Model Reviewed: Chevy S-10

Strength:

It has a strong motor, good AC, excellent sound system and good hauling capacity. Just right for two folks with no kids at home.

Weakness:

Too early to tell.

I recently purchased my S-10 and was very suprised to see all the stuff that came standard. On the advice of a GM mechanic I made sure to get the 4.3 Vortec motor and an automatic tranny. The mechanic has a 94 S-10 with 130,000 on it and is sure it will go to 200-260M without trouble. All parties that I have talked to said to make sure the oil gets changed every 3000 miles. Hell, even the operators maintenance schedule has that one. And with my deal, I get the oil changed for free as long as I own the truck. I would reccomend that if you get an S-10, that you get a standard 2 wheel drive with the 4.3 Vortec and skip the underpowered smaller engin.

Model Reviewed: Chevy S10 LS Reg cab

Strength:

4.3 V6 has very good power though a bit noisy and the auto trans shifts very nicely - could never live with the 4cyl version. Very good ride for a compact pickup and the handling is very good for this type of vehicle. Optional bucket seats are a vast improvment over the S10's standard interior

Weakness:

Wind noise around the windows is pretty high and some small problems like a broken cruise control cable and a drive train related squeek - the dealer took care of these promptly, very pleased with them and their level of service.

Nice truck, much better ride than my 94 Ranger Splash. Nice daily driver with all of the extras (P. windows, locks keyless entry, cruise, tilt, CD etc). While I would have prefered an extended cab for the extra storage space the reg cab is actually pretty comfortable and I'm 6'1" tall. Got a great deal, original sticker was over 20K and paid 11k with only 6k miles on it

motor, tranny, quality and workmanship

I have nothing nice to say about the truck .It is slow to pick up speed air noise even parked at the windows, from the fan. tranny will rev up the motor to 3000rpm and refuses to go . Less than 300 miles into its life, and i hate it.I will never buy chevy or jeep again they suck plain and simple some one want a piece of crap its for sale

Model Reviewed: 4x4 4.3 X-cab

Strength:

Good looking truck. This is my 3rd S-10. No problems with the first two. Quiet Cab, good stereo.

Weakness:

Don't feel like I can trust it. Even "new rebuilt tranny" is making noise again. If I had the money, my next truck would be a Tacoma! I'm looking at a Ford, although I know they have problems too.

96, 4X4 X-cab 4.3 Vortec. Manual Trans. Bought used with no warranty. Big Mistake! 5 speed manual tranny out at 82,000. Big Noise when clutch is out. (noise when clutch is depressed is the throw-out bearing, noise when clutch is out is main bearing in Tranny!)Found out dealership had it rebuilt by the local Vo-Tech students! (after I bought it) So much for GM mr. goodwrench mechanics! Wouldn't rectify the situation. Even tho it was less than a month of purchase! Offered to "take it back to the Vo-Tech for another try"! Last time I EVER go there again! Now air conditioner is leaking freon somewhere, front end has problems, eating my tires fast! Typical rust for S-10's under X-cab and over fender wells. 4x4 will not engage in cold weather. Have to keep button depressed for it to engage. Frightning experience when you rely on it to get to work in the snow.

Model Reviewed: S-10 2.2L Auto 2WD

Strength:

Looks great, nice interior. Good ride and braking. Very cold air. Decent factory stereo. 25+ MPG on 4-cyl auto.

Weakness:

Horrible, horrible, auto trans. Mysterious, incurable driveline clunk. 2.2L four needs more midrange torque. OEM brake pads could last longer.

I got my S-10 with about 48,000 miles on it. Interior is by far the most comfortable and well-designed of any compact truck, and believe me I tested them all. Ride is carlike, smooth, and firm. Braking is excellent but pads wear out faster than expected. Anti-lock kicks hard when engaged. 2.2L four is grossly underpowered. Take off isn't bad but pick up is nonexistant; mash the gas and it just makes noise, doesn't go anywhere. L460E electronic 4-speed auto takes its sweet time shifting, particularly kickdown from 4th-3rd, and is the weakest link in the truck by far. Tends to puke excessive amounts of ATF out the overflow tube. When towing with the 2.2L, leave trans in 3rd gear and keep it to 55 and under.

Strength:

good mileage even the way i drive got it in excellant shape people think i bought it new

Weakness:

wind noise on interstate not much pickup from the 2.2L engine driver seat handle broke no tachometer bad audio and little room for a sub box new shifter knob a pain to install because of the fat stick

My cousin works at the dealership so i got a good deal. Got it used after a lease--only 33000 on it. The step side looks good from the side but a little goofy in the back and the sport rims are nice. Been running great. The check engine light came on so i took it to autozone and the gas cover wasnt tight enough. What a relief. The only problem is lack of power. 120hp and little torque isnt enough for me. Hopefully after i add some intake and flowmasters itll have some better acceleration. Sound system sucked but i would have changed it out anyway because no factory speakers are enough.

Strength:

Acceptable power, nice ride, full frame, excellent sound system.

Good product but very poor customer service. Dealership told me they won't do warranty work because GM doesn't pay. So I'm stuck with worthless warranty. Tried dealing directly with GM - FORGET IT. Rather deal with IRS.
