Strength:

4.3 has lots of power

Weakness:

Bench seat is not very comfortable, wheel hop is terrible--needs traction bars. Door handles break too easy. Front window seal leaks.
Should have 15" wheels not 14" car wheels

Paid $6500 Canadian in June/2000. Had 145,000 klms
Recommended but must keep up on preventative maintenance

Strength:

Loved the flared fenders and metallic paint. very comfortable front seats but back seats are not very useable. Love the power of the V-6 engine, good pick-up and acceleration.

Weakness:

Dash looks a little cheap and there is a lump on the floorboard on the passenger side. Would like 4-doors rather than 3.

If you like a more contemporary looking truck then go for the S-10. Plus there are a ton of after market products for this model. Paid $21,000 and it was pretty much fully equipped.

Strength:

The Chevy S-10 is a very vesitile truck besides the great standard S-10 you can get it in a sports version (X-treme) and then if your more into a rough and tough four wheel drive you can get the ZR2.

Weakness:

The interior needs a little bit of work.

The S-10 is a great truck for under twenty thousand dollars being nicely equiped

Strength:

Great 2.8 V-6 (carb.) engine. More than a quarter million miles on it,-- still doesn't burn any oil, and still has a little kick. Truck is also built very tough, can take a pounding, and the interior quality is great, even for 15 years old.

Weakness:

None, other than wishing it was 4x4.

Great truck. It's been beat up all it's life and has kept on kicking (has 270,000+ miles on it). Other than a new tranny at 180,000 miles, and new radiator at 245,000, it has just been routine stuff to maintain. Quality is great. Well built, still hauls 1500lbs today without complaint.

Strength:

The truck runs really smoothly and handles very well in the 8 months I have owned it. It gets good gas mileage for a truck (25 mpg), and have had no maintanance trouble with it at all. Engine is powerful for a V4.

Weakness:

I have the extended cab and if the seats in the back are folded up then they do squek while driving.

I paid 14,500 for mine and would definetly recomend it for anyone looking for a quality vehicle. It drives great, has good gas mileage, an above average engine for a 4 cylinder, looks good both outside and inside, and has been trouble free. People often complain about the trucks lack of power and when i test drove the automatic model i could see what they are talking about. Mine is a stick shift and it has sufficient enough power to beat out most 4 cylinder vehicles. Overall this is a good quality truck at an affordable price.

Model Reviewed: S10 extended cab 4x4

Strength:

good gas mileage, nice looking interior, 4 cyl. engine sounds like a larger
truck, fairly reliable, great for light/medium off-roading, good handling,
corrosion-protection, The engine/drivetrain has been very reliable with only minor problems due to abuse, This truck has over 130,000 miles on it and it still sounds and drives like new.

Weakness:

I would not recommend this truck for towing anything because it is way under powered for jobs like that and it tends to tear up u-joints very fast. The U-joints are about the only 'major' problem I've had to fix because of towing. Also the engine majorly sucks on the freeway, I almost got rear-ended trying to get the @!#$%^ up to speed. The rear seats squeak really bad, the exterior sheet metal is very weak you can just lean up against then door and leave a huge permanent dent. If you plan on off-roading be VERY carefull, The grill and side plastic moldings are made of VERY brittle plastic, so be careful about branches and crap like that. The paint isn't that great either, but the exposed metal parts usually don't rust. But it scratches really easy for the advertised 'baked on' paint application.

I paid about 10,000 for it back in the day and it's been a pretty good truck. Though i would seriously consider test driving all the other compact trucks out there. Toyota Tacomas especially, those trucks are supposed to be really cool. That's probably going to be my next vehicle, yup

Strength:

Strong 4.3L engine, good looks, fairly reliable

Weakness:

Questionable brakes, lots of squeaks/rattles, horrible paint

I bought this vehicle new in 1990 and paid $11,400. Since that time, I have put 105k miles on it and it is still going strong. Even though I have grown to hate GM because of their notorious reliability problems, I really can't complain about this vehicle. I just recently put $350 worth of cooling system work into this vehicle, but prior to that, I hadn't spent more than $500 in unscheduled repairs during my 10 year ownership. My biggest complaint with this vehicle is concerning the paint job. After approximately 9 years, the paint began to flake off right down to the primer. Now the paint is coming off in sheets. I contend that this is due to poor quality paint and/or a problem with the application process. I can't with good conscience recommend any GM vehicle, but my ownership experience with this truck has for the most part been good.

Strength:

Comforatble bucket seats, good radio. The design of the dash is well thought out and user friendly. Good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Pokey motor though no real problems with the motor. I have around 19,000 miles on this 1998 model.

Most reviews you read about this truck are lukewarm at best. Typically they review the $25,000.00 model and gripe about the cheap plastics. Between rebates and GM mastercard points I got the 4 cylnder SLS model for 9,200. For this reason alone this is a good vehicle.

Yes, it lacks power. I don't drag race to the office. If I did, I would lose to everything except to a post-1972 Pinto. The mileage I get is good. Around 24 mpg overall.

Cnsumers seem to have gone beyond the day when good utility transportation was a requirement. I still feel this sort of need in a vehicle and my S-10 fits the bill.

Model Reviewed: S10 3 door 4x4 ZR2

Strength:

The ZR2 is a tough looking package. I chose this truck partly because it looked better stock than any other on the market. This package is also loaded with goodies such as a paw print four inches wider, four inch greater ride height, larger ring gears, beefy suspension including steering shock absorber, 3.73 locking rear end, sway bars, skid plates, fender flares and 31x10.50 all terrains. A word about the BF Goodrich Baja Champions...excellent. Good grip, got 45,000 out of the first set. Overall, clean lines inside and out, well appointed interior, tough looking exterior. Plenty of power, good road manners, like a champ off-road.

Weakness:

The sound system sucks. Nice head unit cd player, crap for speakers. If you have a family, forget it. Although equipped with seating for one in the rear cab, not even my girlfriend's four year old liked sitting back there for long. Wind noise is a bit of a problem at highway speed. I think there is room for improvement in preventing cabin wind noise. The only technical problem I have with the vehicle is that the antilock braking system is a bit sensitive. I understand, however, that this problem was eliminated in the 2000 models. It's not severe enough to be dangerous, just a little sensitive.

I paid 24,000 for my 1999 ZR2. This may seem like a lot compared to other compact 4x4's on the market, but they don't pack the features of the Chevrolet. The only other truck I considered during my shopping was the Toyota TRO 4x4. This vehicle, comparably optioned, was several thousand dollars more. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone who is a 4x4 enthusiast who doesn't need this vehicle to transport a family. Plenty of room for gear and you, and you can go just about anywhere! Happy trails!

I owned a 1987 S10 2wd ext cab prior to this one, and I must say that although I am very impressed with the advances of the newer model I now own, the old one was a solid vehicle too. I sold it at 145,000 miles, and had only one major repair done the whole time...head gaskets at 80,000. I do like the engine and transmission in the 1999 model. Much better!
