S10 LS Extended cab
Strength:
Engine is strong, once it's tuned up properly. Modifications are available which really bring the 4.3 alive. The after market for this truck is truly amazing. The bucket seats are comfortable for this 6'+ guy, even for a 2,000 mile weekend trip to georgia and back. Cargo capacity is even better than expected, loaded with 1,200 lb of roofing materials, handled the load better than my friends 98 Mazda B4000, even tho the Ford-wanna-be was rated for more.
Weakness:
Suspension. While it rides better than the earlier models, it still rode like a truck. I had to replace the front springs with Moog replacements to keep the front end from bobbing up and down after big bumps. Edelbrock shocks helped too, but are expensive. Fuel economy could be better, but 20 mpg average isn't terrible for a 2wd. The S10 makes a good run around and commuter truck, handles occational hauling duty, but it's no full sized truck. Handling is very truck like, don't expect it to ride like a car, you'll only be disapointed. Similar Products Used: Never drove the other small pickups back to back, just prefered the S10 aftermarket and style. Metric pickups simply didn't stack up power wise. |

Chevrolet S-10 2.2L 5-speed
Strength:
Gas mileage is decent.
Weakness:
DO NOT get the 2.2L; opt for the 4.3L instead. This truck has absolutely no power, and that's WITHOUT the A/C on. This is a good truck except for the fact that it has a 4-cylinder engine. Go for the V-6; you can thank me later. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
STRONG 4.3 VORTEC. EXCELLENT AIR CONDITIONING. GREAT LOOKING PAINT EVEN AFTER 4 YEARS IN HOT FLORIDA SUN. RELIABLE. 62,000 MILES, I HAVE ONLY CHANGED OIL AND ONE SET OF BRAKES, NO MAJOR PROBLEMS AT ALL. I REALLY LIKE THE DEEP THROATY SOUND OF THE ENGINE.OVERALL GOOD LOOKS, GREAT ACCELERATION WITH 5 SPEED MANUAL.EXCELLENT BODY INTEGRITY
Weakness:
CENTER CONSOLE SQUEAKS TOO MUCH. BACK TIRES SPIN TOO EASILY ESPECIALLY IN RAIN. EXTENDED CAB IS PRETTY SMALL TO FIT TWO PEOPLE. I WOULD DEFINATLY RECCOMEND THIS TRUCK AND I HAVE. MY BROTHER IN LAW AND A COUPLE OTHER FRIENDS HAVE BOUGHT S10'S AFTER RIDING AND DRIVING MINE. IT IS A GREAT VALUE. I PAID 16000 NEW IN 97 FOR AN EXTENDED CAB MODEL WITH HEAVY DUTY SUSPENSION AND AIR CONDITION CD 4.3 V6. I HAVE HAD NO RELIABILITY PROBLEMS WITH IT, I JUST KEEP THE OIL CHANGE. I DRIVE IT HARD AND IT RESPONDS WELL. I FEEL LIKE I AM JUST BREAKING IT IN AT 62,000 MILES. I LOOKED AT THE RANGER AND NISSAN TRUCKS AND DROVE THEM AND NEITHER OF THEIR V6'S WAS AS POWERFUL AND SMOOTH DRIVING AS THE S10'S.ALSO THIS TRUCKS RESALE IS QUITE HIGH. MY FOUR YEAR OLD TRUCK IS STILL WORTH 9000 DOLLARS ACCORDING TO KELLEY BLUE BOOK. I HAVE BEEN VERY SATISFIED WITH MY PURCHASE AND WILL BUY ANOTHER CHEVROLET TRUCK IN THE FUTURE. GREAT TRUCK FOR FIRST TIME TRUCK BUYERS. IT IS NOT LUXURIOUS BUT IT LOOKS GREAT HAS A WONDERFUL POWERTRAIN AND IS AN AWESOME VALUE Similar Products Used: 88 MAZDA B2200. THE B2200 WAS A GOOD RELIABLE TRUCK BUT CANT COMPARE TO THIS NEWER TRUCK S10. B2200 WAS A GOOD TRUCK IN THE 80'S.THIS TRUCK IS IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT CATAGORY. |

Strength:
Nothing is able to stop a Chevy. You can drive is the worst conditions and the truck pulls through with ease. This is due to the pull and Torque of the 4.3l 262ci engine that powers my truck. Nothing else handles like this truck. Go with the 5 speed if you want added power and muscle in your truck.
Weakness:
The only dislike is that there is no room around the block to work on the engine. This shows that the 4.3l is a huge engine for the S-10. Not all models have included a techometer in the instrument cluster. Mine does because of the digital display on the 91 model year option. Also look out for the 4.3l case and point the engine tends to build up sludge so make sure to change the oil. (old owner of my truck was such an idiot. Not to mention the use of Penzoil.) I have a 1991 S-10 Tahoe. I love the 4.3L power and reliability. The pull and torque that you get is remarkable. I have had no trouble with the new engine except installing the darn thing. Old owner never changed the oil and eventually I lost a cylinder due to oil leaking arond the ring and the sludge build up. When I took the old engine apart everyone (mechanics too) were amazed that the engine ran with atleast 4 pounds of sludge (no joke) and was still running getting 19 MPG. The engines that Chevy makes are phenomenal. The 4.3l engine has almost too much power because it likes to peel out when it can due to kind of a light end, I altered the weight and have 200 puunds in a truck bok on the truck. One last thing to note is that these S-10 handle better then any other truck I have driven, even in bad conditions with snow, ice, or hard rain. theres no stopping a Chevy. It has been said earlier I will race and other small truck and beat it from the start this is one reason I DON'T drive a FORD. The only engine out there that can compare is the Dodge 5.2l. Similar Products Used: Compared this truck to other trucks. Ford dont make me laugh. Dodge very very close but I like the handling and power better of the Chevy. Nissan no real amount of power. Jeep trucks lack any guts. Toyota very very small v6. |

S-10 LS extended cab 2.2L 5-sp
Strength:
Roomy for a small truck, nice rims, cold A/C, easy to service, (so far), nice interior, decent gas mileage
Weakness:
Motor kind of weak, K&N and Mobil One Synthetic helped. Rear view mirror fell off, weird design, hard to fix. 4x10 speakers suck. I liked #1 plug underneath the compressor.Squeaks and rattles. Needs a console between bucket seats. I would reccomend it. I am 6'3 240 and I fit fine. Runs strong for what it is. Does everything I need it to do, aftermarket carries alot for it. Similar Products Used: 1988 Toyota 2.4l EFI. S-10 much roomier, engines@ the same power. S-10 REQUIRES a clean fuel and air filter to run right. (dirty filters=no power and 20mpg.) |

, S-10 Tahoe
Strength:
The 4.3L has plenty of power for this little truck. The 5spd shifts with ease and precision. Not jerky at all. The factory 14" Rims look slick(high gloss black) against the bright red paint. Pulls anthing and everything in rain, or snow. Good Gas mileage, 20-28MPG. I have added a cat-back system with dual outlets. Truck sounds great! It hasn't lost a race from a stop-light yet. Best performance was beating a Chevy Z71.
Weakness:
Rear wheel drive is fun in the snow with an unloaded bed. Truck is absoulutley great otherwise. Replaced factory stereo and speakers to keep up with the times. And it didn't come with a tach in the dash. Mounted mine on steering column Anyone looking for a light truck with a lot of zip in any gear should look at an S-10. These little trucks with the 4.3 (5spd or auto) fly off the start and respond with extreme accuracy. Not even the A/C bogs this bad boy down. Get 4x4 if you want the all out. IGet the Tahoe Package too! Its basically a reinforced towing bumper and an extra skid plate. The reinforced bumper is a must if wanting to tow! Similar Products Used: There is nothing like it in its class for its time. The Dodge Dakota was close for a 92 but the new dakotas out perform it. It will beat any Ford any day, especially a ranger. |

Strength:
4 Cyl. Decent power, great fuel economy. Good styling (better than F*rd). Lots of aftermarket parts ! Comfortable seats. lots of leg room. Excelent service (Daryl Hickman) 15" Factory Wheels! Unlike the major competitor ...
Weakness:
Standard cab. VERY little storage space! Space saver spare (YUCKY !!) ; Uniroyal Tiger Paws ... Uniroyal? What was Chevrolet thinking? (Those were removed after about 1500 miles) For the money ... The S-10 is a great all round truck .. it is sturdy, has great service ... and has a high over all quality. After friends of mine drove my S-10 (these friends are F*rd owners) they actually said that they would probably look into bying one .... that says a lot. Similar Products Used: F*rd Ranger, Mazda B2200 SE5, Dodge Aero ... Well, I will have to say that the S-10 is by far better than all the others that I have tested (especially for the price) and FAR BETTER than the others that I have owned. |
