Touareg
Strength:
Power, snap, luxury, small turn radius, tows our camper straight and without any effort.
Weakness:
They no longer exist (except of course it's thirst) Bought new (ordered months before they were available. Pretty good rig once bugs were out. Replaced original tires at 20K with Toyo's and they don't show any wear at all after 10K. Many electrical issues, warning lights, bad radio but all resolved after radio was replaced 4th time (most all electonic featues run through radio and Touareg is feature rich). I think it just took a bit of time (new model folks)for VW to work it out. Never, ever had to wait an unreasonable amount of time for parts. Similar Products Used: Mitsubishi Montero, Jeep Cherokee |

Strength:
Great looking SUV, Great to drive when everything is working.
Weakness:
Brakes, expensive to maintain, tire wear Did a lot of research on the Touareg by Auto Magazines I should have done more research by owners. Let THE buyer beware. The Touareg is most likely the best-looking SUV on the market and it stops there. I cannot believe this is a German engineered car. The Touareg has excessive tire wear, sunroof noise that will scare you at low speeds, warning lights that come on for know known reason by the dealers, replacement parts that will take forever to get, brakes need to be replaced at around 20,000 miles and are very expensive to have repaired. An oil change will cost you anywhere from $80.00 to as much as $160.00. Everything on the SUV is expensive to have repaired. VW does not seem to stand behind what I was under the impression to be as one of there flagships. Do not go by the auto reviews, read what owners have to say. I would like to see VW stand behind their product. German engineered cars have been known for their reliability and performance VW has fallen well short on the Touareg. VW Taureg
Strength:
Cornering (for an SUV), Comfort.
Weakness:
Tire wear: I had to replace the tires at 18500 miles. The dealer Service Director alerted me at 800 miles that "they were having real problems with the tires and not to expect good tire life but that VW would stand behind me when I had to replace them." He Lied, VW dealer denied coverage, Pirelli denied coverage, VW corporate denied, VW Regional rep, denied etc. Braking; I hate the braking dynamics, too much boost, not enough stopping power. AWD: I do not like Full time AWD, I want control. Driver Inputs; Throttle is late to activate (delay.) Slow Speed braking is over boost, high speed braking is unconvincing. Quirks: Instrument lights sometimes illuminate just the needles but no background. NAV/Radio Display is complicated to operate and I hate the "disclaimer" I have to activate each time I want to turn on the sound/nav. Seat adjustments; When you stop the car the driver seat begins to travel to the rear to facilitate driver exit, OK but crushes the legs of the LR passenger. (Cannot disable these irritating features.) The car is a good concept gone wrong, too many engineers, too many gimmicks. The Germans are losing their way. Let the Asian car builders overengineer and create a "Nintendo" driving experience. German automakers need to get back to the things that made them the benchmark for quality, drivability, and performance. My "family car" has been the Ford Expedition, my "personal car" has always been German (MB or BMW.) I Traded the expedition for a VW Taureg and I am very dissatisfied with many of the features of the car and with the tire wear. I have had constant alignment and tire issues and I am not happy with many of the "features" of the car. I like driving the car but don't like the braking. The complexity of finger-tip and dash controls is a mess. Some great ideas but too many crammed into a gimmicky format. Similar Products Used: Mercedes Sedans, BMW Sedans, Ford Expedition. |

VW Touareg
Strength:
It has great street appeal, they aren't a dime a dozen like the Volvo's, Lexus, BMW. The lights at night are cool and it does have potential. I don't see any Touareg commercials & wonder if they are going to discontinue it? The air suspension is pretty cool. I've only had it a little over a year, but it handled very well in heavy snow. It handles well going down the highway and in city traffic.
Weakness:
Where do I start? At 1,000 miles, I had to get 4 new tires, because the ones that came w/it were "out of round". After 4 months of waiting the dealer sent me to a tire warehouse to get run of the mill Dunlops. Constant electrical problems, transmission problems, seat belt problems (3wx to get parts), CD player stops playing, or will have very loud static that CANNOT be turned OFF! Back gate recently began to lock itself and can only be opened from the drivers door, air bag fault light defect, chrome trim became cloudy & had to be changed. Dying in reverse. The audio sensors for parking only work 1/2 the time. The headlights turned themselves off while driving in a severe storm. The blinkers quit working on the inside. Two incidents of turning the key to start car & nothing happened. I never see any commercials for the Touareg, so I am wondering if they are going to discontinue it? If they could get the bugs worked out & build on their customer service, I would recommend it, but at this point I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that. We did alot of research prior to this purchase. We have always bought GM SUV's and have been pretty happy. We were very impressed w/ all the bells & whistles. At 1000 miles, the trouble started. However, I do want to mention that this dealer was very accomodating in trying to fix the many, many, many recurring problems. Recently this dealership was sold and the new owner is also being fair and honest, trying to get all of these problems resolved. However, I am almost to the point where I just want to dump it & get a car that isn't in the shop every third week. I had great expectations for this SUV, and am really somewhat disappointed. Touareg V6
Strength:
Comfortable ride, and good carrying capacity. Interior is quite comfortable, and noise level even on highways is acceptable.
Weakness:
MANY items break or wear out far too quickly. Tyre wear is excessive on all four wheels, and brake pads need replacing too after only ~20,000 miles.
Many annoying problems conspire to turn owning this car from a dream into a nightmare. For example, no end of problems with broken tail gates (at least five times!). Car has been back to shop over ten times in less than 18 months to fix multiple problems (see below).

Reliability, reliability, reliability, fit and finish, air suspension - noisy compressor, should I go on! I have owned several SUV's over the past 15 years, including a Mercedes ML. This vehicle is by far the worst vehicle I have ever owned. It has 25,000 miles on it and has been to the shop over a dozen times in 1.5yrs of ownership. I have also had 3 road side service calls. In addition to all the problems, it has several other design defects including but not limited to: rough transmission, noisy air compressor for the suspension, many problems that appear in cold weather... nothing comes to mind...Except maybe a lot of beeping with the parking sensors...but ahh you can shut them off! I have been reading about many problems with the Toureg, specifically, the 2004 model. I recently bought the 2006 V8 with just about every option possible and I must say that I have never driven such an amazing car. Its quiet and super fast, luxurious but rugged. ALso, the sound system in the 2006 must have also been greatly imporved because mine is amazing. Similar Products Used: Jeep

VW Touareg V10 TDI
Strength:
Incredible V10 Diesel, great mileage (as if that mattered with a machine like this), endless torque, best handling vehicle I've ever owned, suspension and brakes fantastic. Very comfortable and plush interior (again kicks Porsche's butt).
Weakness:
Navigation system is a joke! Dealers only now just learning how to troubleshoot and repair. Excessive tire wear (evidently Porsche Cayenne same problem no surprise). Very expensive. Awesome Vehicle, esp with the 535 lb/ft Diesel! On 6000+ trip thru 8 states, mostly in mountains it was nearly like driving a sports car. Over 14,000 ft mountain pases stays in 6th gear virtually all the time! Mileage about 19-20 at 90 - 100 mph; best 28 mpg at steady 70 mph. Starts instantly, even in freezing temps, so quiet can't hardly tell its a diesel. Some problems with few minor items, esp the remote. Took dealerships nearly a year to solve that one! Tire wear excessive. Handling, acceleration, braking phenomenol - definitely can feel the Porsche heritage (I own 2 Porsches at it out-accelerates them). An incredible machine - wouldn't trade it for all the Lexus's or BMW's in the world!!! Now if they would just replace the navigation system (they got it from Cracker-Jax!!
