Toyota Highlander (2010 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The Highlander is Toyota’s car-based midsize SUV, built on a unibody platform with 4-wheel independent suspension. The Highlander offers a tight, quiet ride like a midsize sedan with the higher ride height, available 4-wheel drive, and cargo capacity of a midsize SUV.

The Highlander scores high for its refinement, quiet interior, ride comfort, and flexible and roomy second-row seat. Its 3.5-liter V6 delivers solid performance and 18 mpg overall. The third-row seat is tight and does not fold in a 50/50 split. A new 2.7-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic is available on FWD models.

Strength:

Powerful, roomy, great ride, superb driving comfort, and best reliability from toyota...

Weakness:

none, i love it : )

This is trully an amazing car! I've never been much of a car person but my husband and I were in the market for something that we could take the kids camping in and thus far the highlander has been perfect! It has great power, although the price is high the quality is uncomparible. All the little things in the car work perfectly. We have nearly 35,000 miles on it and my husband drives it hard on the weekends with his fishing buddies and he just loves it. You can't beat the toyota reliability either...

Model Reviewed: Highlander - 4WD

Strength:

AWD
HP
Best gas mileage in the midsize SUV class
Excellent handling, cornering
Surprisingly roomy interior, especially the back seats area

Weakness:

Don't smoke anymore. Don't really need the cigarette lighter and the ashtray.

Highlander and RX300 share same engine and platform. This is basically a Lexus for way less $. Proven high quality. Keeps price/value down the road. Great interior and exterior design.

Model Reviewed: Highlander Limited (2WD)

Strength:

Great Looks, Toyota quality throughout. Firm ride but not unpleasant to us. Fun to drive, my wife likes it better than our Avalon. For the price, it's an MDX killer.

Weakness:

I'm 6'1" and could use another inch of legroom in front, but I'm not cramped at all. Price is a little high, but we got a great deal at $1800.00 under list. Stereo speakers are good but not great.

We love it. The only thing that would make me feel better is a lower price.

Similar Products Used:

Haven't driven that many other SUVs, but the buzz about the MDX probably needs to be put in context -- the Highlander is thousands less for almost the same thing, and is a few thousand less than the RX300 for more, in my opinion.

Model Reviewed: /Highland limited

Strength:

Powerful with V6, 240hp, efficient gas mpg, smooth ride like car, exterior looks great, spacious interior.

Weakness:

None so far

The Highland is a excellent SUV. The V6 engine with 240 hp is very powful to accelerate. The engine runs very quiet and smooth. I would recommend the Highland to anyone who want to buy a SUV.

Strength:

decent v6 power, well laid out interior. It rarely runs right but it is nice to sit in.

Weakness:

zero reliability, tinny doors, cheap glass, very shoddy fit and finish, it's a $8,000 car that they are selling for 30. The 4wd is a joke, my cherokee was more capable on it's roof. Toyota service is completely awful too! They'll be seeing me in court.

This car is a nightmare. I shouldn't have said I have 8 months experience with it as it has been in the shop five of the eight. Everything about the highlander is awful and no one can fix it. The V6 runs great when it starts but if it is cold or rainy you might as well forget it. It's got 9 thousand miles on it and I have already gone through a head gasket. The IFS front end gives it a car like ride but it gives it zero off-road ability and is just another system to fail on this vehicle. Toyota engineers should feel shame... I bought this vehicle based on toyotas reputation for reliability.

Strength:

Looks, comfort,AWD, gas mpg, ride, sound system, above all Toyota quality.

Weakness:

Have found none.

I had heard of the Toyota quality and now I know what it means. The Highlander is one great SUV. No road noise, great ride-smooth. And the MPG are great, 18-20 town, 20-23 highway. I can't wait for the winter to test the AWD in the snow. They did a great job, three cheers for Toyota !!

Strength:

Handling, comfort, Toyota reputation, exterior styling.

Weakness:

Overpriced when fully equipped model is compared to an Acura MDX. Outrageous $619 Toyota protection package on every Highlander sticker I've seen, in the showroom and online.

I have not bought a SUV but unless Toyota starts cutting some price deals on Highlander,I'm saving my pennies and will buy and Acura MDX in September 2001. I wanted an SUV with a sun/moonroof, 4wd/AWD, auto climate control, and ABS. My current 96 Acura TL 2.5 is a NICE car. I didn't want to step down in luxury and $34k is at the far end of my limit (thus the penny saving thru Sept.). That narrowed me down to the Highlander and MDX. The Highlander is smaller which makes it easier to handle. There also seemed to be fewer blind spots. It's also very stylish. But the Highlander I drove and had the features I wanted had the same retail price tag as the MDX. MDX was just as nice with the same features PLUS MDX had more cargo room, a third row fold down seat, seven speaker system including subwoofer, climate control/air controls for second row passengers (my friend in the backseat really appreciated this on the hot day we test drove plus the car cooled off so quickly) and a trip computer screen to give you info on elapsed distance and time, gas mileage, remaining distance on the fuel left in the tank, direction you are heading and the outside temp. MDX simply doesn't nickel and dime you to death like Highlander does with its extras. That's how I felt when purchasing my 96 Acura TL 2.5 Premium too. Toyota, you ALMOST made me switch allegiances, but you got a little too greedy.....

Strength:

- superb interior space, very wide vehicle.
- nice , tight toyota finish in and out.
- not too high unlike the 4runner which feels tippy on turns.
- very smooth "camryish" ride, good visibility
- like the shifter (different but I like it)
- a proper center control with armrest is a must. the
current optional one is practically on the floor !

Weakness:

- the I4 (155hp) does not have enough muscle to accelerate
smoothly from a high speed (say doing 65, want to do 75 for
highway passing)...felt like a dawg @ 60, had to PUSH to get
it to 70 and then the RPM was around 3000 steady. (dunno if
its normal to have 3000@70, have seen only BMWs do that high-revving)
- dealers are ripping off consumers by not offering the options
in low-priced separate pieces. instead they have a 3K "limited"
option for V6 model that includes every damn thing, its take
it or leave it.
- remote keyless entry should be standard, its standard in any
lower priced sportute of sedan these days.
- vehicle skid control was not available for I4 and only as part
of limited for V6. thats a rip-off, in non-snowy parts of country
all one needs is 2WD and VSC. it *must* be made available separately.
(overall I dunno who's squeezing people on the options , the regional
dealers or toyota or both)

overall I think V6 4wd with just the center console & remote
keyless entry is the way to go for snow climes. for rainy or
dry climes the 2wd + VSC should get along fine.

I have my doubts about the I4. its torque is probably too
less to accelarate such a heavy vehicle (3800lbs) smoothly
at high speeds. better to spend 1K extra and get the V6,
if one is selling the farm, sell the fence too and get V6.

best family vehicle for ~26K tmv v6-200hp 4wd and no frills.

if u want a car try accord V6-ex its selling for invoice
of around 23k loaded with moonroof, 6-cd changer, leather,
traction control, 200hp engine.

am caught in two minds really if the extra 3k is worth it.
sale prices should come down another 1K by mid-next yr
hopefully....
