Strength:

Quality, quality, quality. Good power, decent gas mileage (it's a 4X4!). Nice size and ergonomics with excellent control layout.

Weakness:

Brake pedal seems soft and goes down pretty far before anything happens but it does stop well. Could just be the ABS design.

Great SUV. Solid and secure with good highway manners; I feel like I'm riding in a bank vault. I got the Limited edition 4X4 which must have all the options Toyota offered, with the controls hidden like an easter egg hunt (I'm still finding them). Power sun roof, dual power seats, ETC switch, power seats, cruise control, 16-inch alloy wheels, etc. It also came with a great aftermarket Alpine CD player, changer, and sound system. With 104,000 miles on it, it still runs like new. I calculated 22.4 MPG on the first trip. Some areas of the country have an abundance of these as trade-ins and it pays to shop if you're looking for a used one. Mine is exceptional; it belonged to a stock broker and I doubt if it was ever off-road.

Strength:

Fit and finish is typical Toyota. Paint still looks good and body and interior holding up well.

Weakness:

Other weaknesses, V6 is gutless and CD player quit working, crummy sound system. Weak brakes.

I love to give you Toyota lovers a reality check. We purchased our 4Runner from a family member, like new condition. Vehicle had 70,000 miles on it, figuring it was just getting broke in for a Toyota. The second week we had it, the exhaust manifold cracked. 1 month later it sucked a head gasket. Front brakes lasted no longer than 16,000 miles and very weak at that. 1 year later, sucked another head gasket. Toyota sends a recall notice for head gaskets. We had the new and improved gaskets installed and found out that it had a burned exhauast valve. $1700.00 later, we had new head gaskets, new timing belt, valve job, new water pump and a refurbished radiator and new hoses. Still going through front brakes, and now steering gearbox starts to leak fluid. 3 power steering pumps had to be replaced. A/C stopped holding it charge, but no leaks could be found. Just replaced the water pump again. Our biggest mistake was keeping this pile way too long. Would I buy another Toyota? Yes. All manufacturers make lemons!

Strength:

Roomy, functional, well designed, got lots of power, nice sounding standard stereo, handles great, looks nice.

Weakness:

plastic fenders which are glued on. rattling in sunroof and back seats. some squeaking in the back of truck. lower gas mpg than advertised. Being a conservative driver, I am only getting at highest 19.5 mpg on highway. controls on door hard to find at night. Also, the auto door locking when car is shift into gear takes getting use to.

Had the car for about 2 months. So far no problems with exception for some annoying rattles and squeaks. The truck handles great, has enought storage space for most things, has great acceleration, huge sun roof, rear seats that fold flat. It is definely better than my SAAB so far.

Strength:

Outstanding quality, simplicity, full-frame, amazing clearance, and great roll-cage...yup rolled the truck on a 100 Km highway when I hit the ditch and crawled out the sunroof.

Weakness:

Insurance is skyhigh, worse than Mercedes ML320, and all other SUV's. Factory CD player is garbage. Gas mileage is garbage 55 litre fill - 335 km (winter) and 400km (summer). Poor braking. THE WORST OIL FILTER TO ACCESS AND CHANGE AND SPARK PLUGS TAKE 1 HOUR...but never any garage visits, take that Ford, GM, Chrysler, Mercedes, KIA.

This is a real SUV with well thought out engineering, a true SUV suspension with grease nipples and strong linkage. Towing is easy, parts are great quality, and there are absolutely NO gremlins to deal with. If you can get around the gas mileage, you will save money in repairs and a strong resale.

Strength:

Solid truck. Exceptional handling for an suv. Comfort. Adequate power from the V6 3.4L. Best of all, reliability. I purchased mine with 120k miles, and I feel confident it will reach 200k no problem. It runs great.

Weakness:

The only objective I have is the 275+ mile range. For an suv, I expected a larger range, but this could be typical. Toyota improved this in the latest 4runner with a range of 400 miles.

I have done extensive research on suv's and based on consumer feedback, especially from this site, the 4runner is the most top rated suv available. The 4runner consistantly scores average 8-10, while others may average 5-6 from consumers. I couldnt agree more from the consumer feedback. See for yourself.

Strength:

V6 engine, RIDE, quality of material used, quite ride, plenty of nice little features. Very Good looking in the Stratosphere blue color.

Weakness:

I think all the switches on the driver door should be lighted, anti-thieft system also should be a standard equipment.

First of all, if you’re considering buying an SUV, don’t buy anything at least until you test drive the new 2003 4Runner, The TRUCK is 100% different from last year’s model. I test drove the V8 SR5 and the V6 Sport and to be honest the V6 had much more than enough power for me, the engine is smooth and so far I am averaging about 18 in the city but its too early to give an accurate figure. I suggest getting the V6 if you won’t be towing anything heavy. Also the issue of the 5 speed automatic transmission in the V8 versus the 4 speed in the V6, I noticed the 5 speed is geared at a much lower ratio, the change from the first gear to the second is very FAST and I think the reason is to help with the towing. At 60mph both transmission had exactly the same low RPM, so the 5speed just shifts sooner. The RIDE is excellent very nice and controlled for a rear live axle, also very quite at high speeds, plenty of nice features, the 4Rrunner is a REAL SUV, body on a chassis frame, versus a mono body, its one of the few real off road trucks out there. Toyota quality is above average and their products are very reliable. I also test drove the Honda Pilot same price but just didn't have any personality, will maybe be nice for a large family, I suggest to test drive one before you make up your mind.

Strength:

Overall past reviews and product durability. High resale value.

Weakness:

Oxgen sensor went out about with 60K miles. Fake wood panel on dash is fading quickly. rear seat difficulty to fold down as lock keeps hanging up.

This is the first SUV I have owned as I have always driven (and love) sports cars. Really like the Toyota 4-Runner and the way it handles. I bought the 4-Runner brand new in 1997.

Sharp-looking, fun to drive, and ours was still going strong with 156,000 miles on it!

Weakness:

The ease in which it tips over. These are the most dangerous kinds of crashes, and if it can happen at 10-15 mph, it can happen anytime.

We loved our 4runner! It was a sharp SUV, even though we bought it 5 years old in 1998. Last week, however, going UP a hill, and only 10-15 mph, it slipped in slush, and rolled over. I shudder to think what would happen if someone was driving one of these things and going faster.

Strength:

It has 300K km's on it but the truck is very durable and strong. Seems as if Toyota built it for the trails! So get out there and blaze one!!

Weakness:

Underpowered engine? An aftermarket air filter, headers, and an exhaust make a huge difference. Rust easily, slow rear window.Poor fuel economy(especially with the mud tires.)

I've always liked these trucks and wanted to own one. Well now I do!! I haven't had it very long but I can already tell that it'll be around for a while. I bought mine private already slightly modified(lift, big tires) so now it is ready for whatever I throw at it.
