Strength:

Reliability, still has high quality fit and finish. Very smooth engine, relatively quiet. Very comfortable front seats.

Weakness:

Gas tank is too small. Only get about 300-320 miles on a tank.

Great vehicle. Nothing but compliments. Drives quite nicely, really rather zippy with the 5 speed. Used to drive a 1990. In some senses the 1990 was a better vehicle in the fact that the inside fit and finish reflects a higher quality standard. The ''98 however, handles better and isn''t underpowered. Towed a U-Haul 5000 lb trailer from Southern Florida to Atlanta with no problems. Like the cup holders in front of the vents, allows temperature control of the beverage. HVAC vents can be adjusted so they don''t blow in your face.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Ride is miserable with a sideways jerking motion. Reliability is non-existant. Unbelievable road noise. I''ll take a 4Runner any day over that miserable Jeep!

Strength:

Beautiful body, GREAT new 3.4l engine(much more power than the 3.0l), Reasonably priced, it''s a Toyota!

Weakness:

Small fuel tank and not very good gas mileage, cloth arm rests(light color gets dirty FAST)

The Toyota name stands for quality and I have experienced that from my very first new car purchase in 1990 to my newest 2000 4Runner. I bought a brand new 1990 Toyota 4Runner and drove it over 300,000 miles(308,067 to be exact) and traded it in with the "factory defective" head gasket and the ORIGINAL freon(never had it changed OR recharged!!!) I have to admit, I am a stickler about maintenance, ie timing belts every 60k, oil changes, etc. but even the dealer could not believe how beautiful the truck looked after sooooo many road trips and such high mileage. When it came time to part ways with the truck I had spent over 6 years, WITHOUT a car payment, I knew right away what the obvious choice wuld be. I think the key is to buy one NEW. You put the break-in miles on the vehicle and you begin a long lasting relationship of good maintenance and that Toyota will not let you down!

Cornering

87,000 miles and regular maintenance performed. I''ve been off-roading, traveling, boat pulling, dirt hauling...there isn''t much this SUV won''t handle. After 5 years, I''m looking to give this one to my wife and picking up a new one for myself. I feel like I wasted money on the 100K warranty.

Model Reviewed: 4Runner w/Sport Package

Strength:

Tight handling, AWSOME off road abilities, smooth ride, tons of room, great field of view when driving, extremely strong, excellent stock suspension, best friend''s girlfriend and her friend (passenger seat) hit a telephone pole head on at 45mph, she didn''t get a scratch, and her friend slept through it. I was impressed, and sold. Stylish w/ Sport Package, best looking SUV

Weakness:

Have to hold the sun roof button when closing, could use more HP, but quick enough, supercharger way way too expensive, pricey, but I could have paid more for a lot of other trucks that do not come close to the performance of a 4Runner.

Great quality. I test drove a lot of trucks and the 4Runner was the tightest smoothest ride I found. A pure off road BEAST!! I drove a Cherokee for 2 days, and it felt horrible, it took bumps and rutts like a Pinto. The room packed into the 4Runner is incredible. I have extremely long legs, and that has been no problem with my 4Runner. There is plenty of passenger room in teh back as well, even with my seat all the way back. It handles like a Lexus, hugs tigh turns with ease, even at dangerous speeds...I had to test it. I have tested my 4Runner off road, and so far it is unstopable! Mud to the wheel wells, no problem, huge hills no problem. I tried to take a hill in 2 WD, but I started spinning. So I started to back down, and thump, my trailer hitch jammed into the ground, it was that steep, so I popped it into 4, clicked on the differential lock, and up I went with out a struggle. I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am with my 4Runner!! It still only has about 20k miles so time will tell how tough it is. I have seen a ton of 4Runners with 200k+, and that was jsut looking into buying a used one. Ok Nuff said:)

Don''t buy cars at Longo Toyota because they are not willing to help you when your car breaks or when you have issues needs to be resolve. They only care about selling cars and making money.

Bought a 2000 4Runner Limited at Longo Toyota in El Monte, CA. Next day, the emblems in the rear was coming off, the front driver side power seat broke. The front dash was bubbling up. So, they had to pull my dash completely apart to replace it. My rear mudguard was scratched. Longo Toyota had the worst customer service. They were not willing to help me at all. But, there customer service dept. kept calling me to tell me that a survey from Toyota is coming and please mark everything was excellent. A few months later my power steering pump went out.

What a great SUV. I had one of the first 4 runner''s back in 1985. They have come along way and the quality is just the same, great. I had 195,000 miles on the 85 when I gave it up in 1994 and plan on doing the same thing with this one.

Strength:

Durability, off-road capabilities, versatility, quailty of paint-job (still shines after 7 years).

Weakness:

Low power on hills and passing. Water pump repair can be very expensive ($500) since it''s buried in the engine (4.5 hours of labor). Might as well change the timing belt while you''re in there.

7 years and still humming! I bought my 4-Runner after graduating college in 1994 and have developed a good friendship over the past years. It''s a tough truck, as I found out when I moved from Chicago to Colorado. Although it handled Chicago''s icy winters just fine (pulling me out of snow jams and allowing for some fun play doing donuts in snow covered parking lots), it really showed it stuff off road in Colorado. My only complaints are that it has inadequate power on the hills. I regularly have trouble climbing moderate to steep inclines at anything over 40 mph (while the newer model 4-Runners zip by me). Repairs have been typical: timing belt, brakes, radiator, tires, tune-ups. The only sore spots were having to change the head gasket due to a manufaturer recall (luckily, that was free of charge) and changing the water pump ($500-ouch!). I''m almost at 100,000 miles and can''t decide if I''ll keep going or if it''s time for a new one. Rumor has it, the new design is to arrive for 2003. Maybe we''ll hold out until then!

Strength:

Good off-road, lots of cargo room, good on gas for a full size SUV.

Weakness:

Rust prone, underpowered, parts don''t last long.

I bought one used because of the reputation of Toyota for reliability. I''m not sure whether mine was abused or whether the builders got into the sake that day. Every part that could conceivably fail on this thing did. 5 alternators (albiet re-builds after the first one), starter motor, wiper motor, water pump, an idler pulley (!?), the list goes on and on. Parts are ludicrously expensive. As well, the body simply does not hold up to canadian winters and road salt. My dad''s 1991 Toyota 4*4 and brother''s 1987 have had fewer problems, but problems nonetheless. Strengths are the vehicle''s versatility, a reliable if gutless motor, and relatively good mileage (24 mpg). Overall, however, these are over-priced.
