Strength:

All Wheel Drive, shift on the fly option. How great - while driving anywhere under 62mph, you just pop it into All Wheel Drive, and in any kind of rain or snow, you have got some serious grip.

Weakness:

I honestly can't think of any. I had heard once that these things were the number 1 tippiest cars on the market - but we CRUISED up and down 2 mountain passes at well above the legal speed limit, and never even thought about tipping.

Can I just say "WOW"?! The reason I am writing this is we just got back from a LONG ROAD TRIP - Carlsbad (San Diego Area) to Granite Falls Washington (about 1hr North of Seattle). It took us 19 hours on the way up, and 18 on the way back, mostly in part because the seats fold all the way into a BED. No kidding. You just take the head rest off of the front seats, and push them all the way forward and all the way back, and the seat melds into the back seat, which also folds down, providing a very decent bed. My 6'5 fiance could stretch the ENTIRE WAY when laying on it - which is key in any road trip - one person sleeps while the other drives. We STILL had room for all of our luggage with BOTH seats making a bed, and when you turn the heated seats on and a down comforter - man, it was downright comfy. The other thing we LOVED was the "shift-on-the-fly" all wheel drive. This made the car grip the road so well in the notorious pouring Washington rain, and in the mountains, there was no stopping us. No slipping, just gripping. It was INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!! WE LOVED IT!!!

Strength:

Rear Air, 50k miles til you need to change tires.

Weakness:

Poor Resale. Gas Mileage 14 miles/gallon. Weak engine. Unsafe, due to Rollover Tendecies. Noisy Ride. Substandard fit and finish in interior.

A capable vehicle. Enough room. A versatile vehicle. Had this 2001 Montero after owning a 1995 Montero SR for 5 years, 145,000 miles since bought new. We felt that we had Real Good Luck with the 1995 SR and this one made sense. We put 63,000 miles on the 2001. This vehicle is not as durable as the 1995 SR> Trading for a new 2003 Acura MDX. :^)

Weakness:

The compay was not fair regarding the return of the car at conclusion of lease. They charged us almost amount for damage as our security deposit; isn't that strange. The car was always garaged and cared for. Also, we returned it with over 5,000 unused miles. I would think twice about a lease again with this company.

The product was good. Although we had to replace brakes at 18,000 miles.

Strength:

Comfort, Stylish, and Tough I recommend this SUV for the price

Weakness:

Better Shocks/Struts could help make a smoother ride on the Highway

Montero Limited is a stylish SUV with many bells and whistles. I purchased the gasoline 3.5 liters engine and it has a lot of torque. It is great to drive because I can use the 5th gear for above 40mph and 4th above 30mph when towing 5,000 lbs. or less up the mountains her in Colorado it does the job very well. The vehicle does tilt as any one can expect from a SUV over 4650lbs. Consumer report has reported that it rolls easy but because every vehicle can be rolled over by abrupt steering they placed this automobile in the "unacceptable" category. I took the vehicle in the mountains and on the straight highway and it is very comfortable for passengers and driver. With so many options like cruise control, automatic A/C, leather seats, able to sit 7 in extreme, a full featured 4x4 capability (low range gears, 2 lockable differentials and a limited slip differential by the touch of a button. It is a properly engineered, technically superb and well-finished vehicle at a very reasonable price relative to its competitors.

Strength:

Well engineered mechanics, attention to details in the finishes, very relax to drive, economical in diesel form, very roomy and solid off road capability.

Weakness:

Suspension could be improved for on road driving (New RAV4 also pitches and rolls but damps out quicker). Diesel engine noisier than European competitors and can do with a higher top speed.

Montero is called Shogun in UK. It also has a diesel model which I bought. The diesel is very torquey and about 150lb heavier than the 3.5 litres petrol equivalent. It is great to drive because I can use 5th for above 40mph and 4th above 30mph. Very good fuel consumption of over 29mpg (diesel!). The vehicle does pitch and roll as one can expect from a SUV over 2100kg (or 4650lb). I believe the American Consumer report has been over the top to put this vehicle in an "unacceptable" category because every vehicle can be rolled over by abrupt steerings. I took the vehicle to a 1 in 3 mountain pass and then rode it over a sandy beach and conclude that the Shogun/Montero/Pajero performs very well. The vehicle has an above average equipment (10-disc CD changer, cruise control, automatic air con, leather seats, able to sit 5 in extreme comfort and an extra 2 whenever needed, a full featured 4x4 capability (low range gears, 2 lockable diffs and a limited slip differential) and drive extremely well in motorways (highways). It is a properly engineered, technically superb and well finished vehicle at a very reasonable price relative to the competitors.

Strength:

Honest and capable quality SUV with a good dose of luxury.

Weakness:

None with the car. Some with dealership. They need to teach their mechanics to tighten bolts back after they loosen them up.

Great and roomy SUV. Very capable machine of the great built quality. 18K miles of trouble free ownership. High class interior/ exterior, material and finish. Tons of room for people and cargo. Took it to several 500mi at the time trip through the rain and snow and mud. Goes where you will not think of taking it. 4H mode does wonders on the 4-5 inch of snow. Not a hint of loosing traction. Stereo is awsome. Seats are comfotable. Color plazma display is great and usefull. Will recommend this vehicle to a friend, or family member.

Model Reviewed: Pajero 3.5 GLS

Strength:

We have high output 3.5 DOHC V6 (250HP)so power is good. Excellent reliability, Dual Aircon in Long Wheel Base works very well in Hot African climate. Handles well at speed on dirt or paved roads. After nearly 8 years few noises and no rattles inside. Will maintain 100 mph plus all day on open highway. Mileage at 19 mpg not great but acceptable given size and weight. Tows very well, very stable. Reliability record has been fantastic-Only regular servicing and maintenance required. Replaced Battery after 6 years.

Weakness:

Service Parts like brake pads etc expensive when compared to Toyota, Nissan etc. Stock Tyres are useless for African Conditions. Replaced with BF goodrich All Terrain KO. Ride is hard when unladen-compared to Land Rover.

The Pajero is known as a Montero in the US. The vehicle has 120,000 Miles with no problems at all. Feels good for another 200,000 miles. No snow, Ice etc in Africa but been across the Namib and Kalahari deserts where temperature exceeds 120 d. No overheating problems at all. Dakar rally heritage really shows. Experience has shown that use of synthetic lubricants all round is a good idea. Qualified Technicians that can work on a Mitsu not easy too find. Will replace with another Pajero in a few years time.

Strength:

Great riding, awesome Infinity sound system, hide-away third row seat, Price.

Weakness:

Needs a couple of extra horses. In high water, design of the front-end causes water to shoot up onto the windshield even at low speeds.

After driving and riding in several SUV''s, this vehicle has the best ride and handling of any SUV that I have sat in(4Runner, Trooper, Sequoia, Expedition). This vehicle has the amenities and finish of vehicles costing 20 thousand dollars more. Anyone would be hard pressed to find a domestic 4x4, with the features of a Montero Limited for the same price, much less an import.
