Strength:

I bought this XLS 4d 4wd used w/ 22000 miles on it. Obviously the resale is poor, a strength since I bought used and will be holding it for a while. Styling is superior, quieter than Pathfinder test driven, and quiter than 4runner I owned for 4 years

Weakness:

I have the 3.0 V6,not the optional 3.5L v6. Yes it is underpowered but passing and merging are not a problem. Besides that what SUV isn't underpowered? Answer: only the undependable ones.

I would have to recommend the Montero as a great used buy. A poor new investment considering what I just bought a 2000 used for. As far as dependability I can only go along with Mitsubishi's overal rep. as a dependable car maker. I don't have enough miles on mine to say yet.

Strength:

Looks, Comfortable ride, Way better ride than a 4Runner=(100% JUNK), 28k miles with minimal problems (fan motor for A/C went out, Brakes wore out fast and Battery died a little over a year used. The warranty took care of the issues, except for brakes. As you see these are Wear and Tear items.

Weakness:

I Love it overall... Little lack in Horsepower and but enough power to pass some V6 and all 4cyl's of course. Gas mileage not bad at all, Compare to my other vehicle I own, 97 Ford Mustag GT V8!!!!! Compare to the 96 4Runner SR5 I owned, My Montero is 110% better. Like I said have had minimal repairs on my 2000 Montero. In the other hand, my 4Runner I had, had problems at 11,00 miles. Head gaskets (major damage to engine), Engine Squeeling at 15,00 miles, at 40K the Piston blew out of the Engine Block (having the Warranty replace the whole engine took these crap to Mitsubishi Dealer and traded for the new 2000 XLS (Great choice so far), now you see what kind of Junk Toyota makes!!!!!

I recommend the Montero Sport XLS... To anyone. Now, the 2000 model is better than 2001... 2001 has no power antenna, no fog lights.... Overall you will be satisfied with this truck.

it looks great its black.it has a high ground clearence.it has a lot of room.i like the tires. i never had to shift into 4wd last winter.

Weakness:

it is under powered for a v6. it gets terrible gas mileiage.getting on the freeway sucks. the air cond. is terrible.the engine misses at idle and you can feel the ruff idle in the drivers seat.the dealer cant give me and anser why it runs like crap. at 4000 miles had to have tha thermistac replace it was leaking antifreeze.going to the dealer with a problem is a joke.i feel i wasted my money. so please dont buy one.if it does not get fixed right it is going bad to the delear.i wont pay for this piece of junk
i think the delears know there problems with these trucks when the came to the u.s.a but just want to get them off warrenty. how do i feel about mitsubish they such. and some one from our goverment needs to look in to the problem i think theres a cover up going on.should of bought a blezer with a 350v8 i would have the power and get better fuel mileage

i would not recommend a montero to anyone i sorry i bought.if i could get out of it i would. after taking it back to the place i bought. i was very unhappy. you dont pay 29000 for a suv the have problems at 4000 miles

Nice styling, OK price,

Weakness:

Constant Alignment problems, balancing problems, weak engine needs more horse POWER!! The AC takes too long to cool the cab. Ride is not smooth enough. Had to get my four wheel drive adjusted

Look around first before you buy this truck. Mitsubishi service departments stinks. They are unfriendly, unskilled and when you go to them for repeat problems they make you feel you have done something wrong. When really there are problems with the truck itself. before you buy a truck check out your service department first

we looked for several months, did all the comparisions on line, and in person, we bought the silver and put the black grill on front and back, it looks gorgeous, we took two long trips and had no problems, love the look whatever you do, do not leave the keys in the vehicle, i went to get gas, keys were on the seat, my son shut the door, locked all doors, the sherrif could not get it open, or a wrecker service, yes they are theft proof , had to break in my house for the other set of keys, so please be careful

Weakness:

we have a clatter in the engine, not the power we excpected, we have done gas treatments, but the clatter is there, i don't know what is is, does anyone else have this problem,

we love our montero, it gets a lot of looks, i searched for a long time, as this was my very first brand new vehicle, im a little nervous about this clatter though, the dealer told us to put the gas treatment in, and there is also a disagreement about which gas to use, finally we were told to put regular unleaded not the higher octane, i would recommend it,i love my smokey (that's his name) but like everyone else we thought it would have a bit more pickup, my friend asked if i could get any vehicle i wanted what would i get, i said you are sitting in it.if anyone else has the clatter, please e-mail me, linniebinn@aol.com thanks, linnie

Strength:

exterior styling, interior comfort.

Weakness:

reliability, climate control operation, cup holder sucks! transmission is jumpy

I leased my truck for $327.00/month with $1100.00 due @ delivery. which was a great deal for a loaded SUV. However, many things have gone wrong with it.

the battery discharged itself on a sunday afternoon while sightseeing in Gettysburg, so I called the roadside assistance - They never showed up! After a few failed jump-starts from other vehicles I walked 2 miles across the battle field in 95 degree heat to a gas station for a battery booster.

While away on business, I started the truck and heard an explosion. It turns out that the battery exploded! the force actually dented the hood from the inside. Mitsubishi refused to send their roadside assistance because I was 300 miles out of the 36,000 mile warranty & refused to replace the battery or repair the hood - even though it's a mitsubishi brand battery & still under warranty .

It has been in for problems with the breaks, the security system, stereo speakers, and the latest problem is the knob for selecting between defrost floor or dash vents (this problem has had the truck back to the dealer 4 times)

It may look cool but this truck is filled with flaws & defects & it only has 38,000 miles on it. I will be buying a nissan, toyota, or jeep next time.

Strength:

I initially chose this car because I wanted to feel like I was above everyone on the road. I am a short person, so being able to see over other cars was a big plus for me. Also, it has a really nice looking exterior...it's a really cute SUV!!

Weakness:

Where do I begin?...the brakes are terrible and have a really delayed reaction time. I've had several problems with engine noise and the battery had to be replaced after only having it for 7 months. The car shakes terribly on the expressway and the brakes don't react quickly enough at high speeds and also shake when braking on the expressway. Also, on several occassions I have had some interior squeeky noises.
The interior of the car is kind of plain, but it's not so bad and it's pretty comfy and has a very comfortable and spacious back seat.

Well, I feel that I should've done more research when buying my car. Later I found out that it rated poorly in the crash test and that it has a problem with roll overs. Now I am stuck in a lease with a car that I am now scared to drive and I am overall very disappointed in. I definatly don't think that I will ever purchase another montero sport. I still think that it's a really nice car (looks wise), but what really matters is the cars performance and safety...honestly, the performance is terrible and very undependable and I do not feel safe!

Strength:

Body style is nice and I got pretty good gas mileage.

Weakness:

The motor surge while I was pulling into a parking place. I was getting ready to put it in park when the motor surged. My foot was on the brake, but it would not stop the car. I tore down a metal fence and headed towards a bleacher. I did a 90 degree turn and kept going. I heard a click and the engine died down and i was able to stop the car. Mitsubishi Complaint Department was not very much help. the person I talked to would only give me his first name and his last intial. The car had done this several months before but it was in park under my house and I cut the ignition off. The car is leased and I want out of the lease but they have a buy back lease policy. Why shoud I buy back their defaluty equipment? There was a cover up in Japan and Asia with the brakes and the motors. Is this happening here???? If I take the car back, when is it going to do the same thing again???? Mitsubishi has the car and they say nothing is wrong with it, but it could have been the computer shoots air into different systems and something could have gone wrong, but they see no evidence of it. My insurance company is sending some one out. No I did not have my foot on the gas when it should have been on the brake!!!! I don't want to wait for a third time for it to surge. What do I do ???

I would never buy another one of these vechiles!!!!

Strength:

1. Attention - different compared to other SUV's
2. Road/Highway - smooth ride on the highway (carlike feel)
3. LS Model included automatic trans, power windows and locks, privacy glass, rear deflector, side-steps, overhead console, alarm, fold down seats, cd player(standard) and roof rack all for $26,000.
4. No steering wheel vibration over 80 mph.

Weakness:

1. Accelaration from a start/stop position
2. Getting in and out of the SUV for the rear passengers

The Montero Sport LS is a good vehicle around $26,000 for the options you can have. Compared to other SUVs the standard equipment on the Sport would be extra on the others. I enjoy the ride especially on the highway because its smooth and quiet. Other pluses include the attention from bystanders referring to my Black and shiny Montero Sport LS as I drive by bumping my 2 '10 subwoofer. This is definitely a SUV that you can hookup and have its own style on the road amongst the 4runners, pathfinders, and of course explorers. The main reason I bought it was the options, appearance, and uniqueness. I would recommend this truck to anyone who wants something different. This vehicle is not meant for a true outdoorsman more for city folk and cruising in downtown. I am 23 and most of the attention I get are from the college-aged crowd and adults in their mid-30's. You can get a really good deal on SUV like this if you cannot knock down the price ask for options because it will make a big difference what you Montero Sport will look like.

Options to personalize your Montero:
grille guard(recommended),blackouts,moonroof,in-dash cd player,fog lights.

Dont get me wrong good Truck but for $30-35K it should not do this.
I would rather get a BMW if I was paying over $30K for a SUV.

Strength:

I love the superb ride. I can take corners that would shame some sedans. The ride is just amazing! I live on a dirt road and in some other cars I have driven in I can sometimes knock my own teeth out. But not in the Montero Sport. The in-floor organizer does wonders for grocery-getting. It was so quiet at 70 mph that you just wonder if the motor is still running. That is untill I installed an aftermarket muffler. Overall, great car, one of the best looking SUV I have ever seen.

Weakness:

Acceleration, for now at least. Nothing else though. This car is amazing.

If you want a car that will give you a whole lot of compliments, the most beautiful ride in an SUV, and a bang for the buck, you can't go wrong with the Montero Sport.
