Strength:

Impressive ride, driving height (great view of the road), handles great off road, excellent value, exterior looks (of course), interior space for a mid-size SUV is outstanding!

Weakness:

NONE YET!

ATTENTION EVERYONE!! There are plenty of misguided SUV owners that have written reviews on this site, so I want to set the record straight. THIS VEHICLE/MODEL YEAR 00-02 WAS GIVEN THE HIGHEST & SAFEST RATING buy the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety-a "GOOD" (http://www.hwysafety.org). Next, this is a TRUCK, not a high performance car! Expect it to perform LIKE A TRUCK. Futhermore, the rollover rating is about the same for most SUV''s! It is simple - high center of gravity, high speed turn, what do you think will happen with a truck? The fact is that this is a GREAT "TRUCK"- I purchased this to get out of a 99 Jeep Grand Charokee (horrible vehicle) which qualified as a "LEMON" per my state''s Lemon Law. Chrysler/Jeep was not helpful AT ALL in finding a resolution to the problem before litigation. I could not litigate due to its lack of convienience (I am in the military and soon to deploy for obvious reasons)- case and point I will NEVER buy an american automobile again. I''M SOLD ON MY MONTERO SPORT!! BUY JAPAN! Don''t be sheep!

Strength:

Great looks and interior room. Handles very nicely. Compared to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was a serious initial consideration for us, the Montero Sport has much better acceleration and environmental controls.

Weakness:

Brake wear (obviously), dealer and value. After a year and a half, the resale value is less than what we still owe on it.

Nice looking SUV with many welcome extra features on the Limited model. The exterior finish, after 18 months, is holding up very nicely to the desert heat and sun. The larger 6 Cyl. provides plenty of power for normal driving ... but at a cost, as the gas mileage is terrible. Transmission could be geared a little better as there is a lot of bothersome downshifting when climbing long hills. Mechanically, the Montero Sport has been average. Front brakes wore out at 23K miles, which was a shock since I''d been used to getting 40K out of every other vehicle I''ve owned. Something I did learn from the experience was that you need to be sure to always set the hand parking brake as that will keep the rear brakes adjusted (something not mentioned in the owners manual). If you''re over 5''10" you may want to consider something with more headroom. The dealership has been a most unpleasant experience, after buying the Montero, as they have been downright rude to my wife on several occasions and comments like "if we touch it, we''ll probably make it worse" (when attempting to get an annoying rattle fixed) are inexcuseable.

NONE AT ALL!

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! ONLY INTERESTED IN SELLING CARS, AND AFTER THE SALE, NO COMMITMENT TO CUSTOMER SATISFACTION!

Purchased a car that had "lot damage" on back bumper. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM THE FAIRFIELD DEALERSHIP! THEY JACK YOU AROUND, AND NO COMMITMENT TO THOSE WHO NEED HELP WITH A QUALITY PROBLEM! The bumper was poorly repaired; car''s paint is black, and the bumper was GREEN! POOR QUALITY PAINT JOB! I was told to see the specialists at Barber Vallejo, and they did confirm that a bad job was done on the bumper. Recommended a new bumper replacement. Fairfield would not replace! Poor customer service at the Fairfield Mitsubishi car dealership!

Good looks, a lot for the money.

Weakness:

Cheap battery

Absolutely beautiful SUV. Drives great, handles well for a truck. We have over 50,000 miles on it, original yokohama tires still have great tread left, replaced front brake pads at about 35,000. The battery totally died after 2.5 years, as seems to be the norm with these. Only had 1 slight other problem, the 4WD wouldn't engage, dealer fixed it with no trouble. My wife drives the car every day, it gets decent gas mileage, still looks good, hauls the dogs, groceries. The compass and temp package is cool. Ours is manual, so we don't have too many complaints about the power, although it is a little weak, but that's the price for decent gas mileage. We have been to several different Mitsubishi dealers and have never experienced the problems that some have mentioned. All in all, it's a great car, we got a lot for the money, and we certainly don't regret it.

Strength:

Looks great. Great gas mileage for a mid-size SUV. We got 21 MPG on the highway & 18 in town. Very roomy inside.

Weakness:

Whistling problem is something you would not expect on a car this new. Power Antenna & Door Locks pretty clunky.

So far, we really like this vehicle. Wife really wanted a Tahoe, but for some reason at $40K now, we can't afford 'em!! So, we found a 2000 Montero Sport XLS 4WD for well under $20K and you definitely get a lot for your money --- I don't think I would buy one brand new though. That's quite a bit to drop in one year. The only problem we've had so far is a factory defect that causes the windsheild to whistle intermittenly, but only when you're on the highway and the temp is over 90. Lucky us in the desert, we heard it all the time. Dealer did take care of it though. Engine is definitely adequate. I've heard some reviews saying it needs better acceleration, but you need to remember it's an SUV, and a heavy one at that.

Looks GREAT!!!! Roomie. handles great on snow and Gravel..heater and AC work Terrific. Not sure why others had so much bad luck with theirs. My truck is cherry and doesn't quit.

Weakness:

As others have already said....the 3.0 V6 lacks some power, but if I wanted a sports car, I would have bought one. If you want more speed then this thing has, you are rodding on the truck.

One word...AWESOME!! This is the best vehicle I have EVER had. I have had 4-runners, blazers, and unfortunatly an Explorer. This is by far the top of the line. Beautiful vehicle. Get's all the looks.

Who cares if it looks good, if it maims you in a crash?

Weakness:

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE CRASH TEST RESULTS

DO NOT BUY THIS VEHICLE!!!
DO NOT BUY THIS VEHICLE!!!

Ok, having got your attention...

I have owned 2 Montero Sports, a 1997 LS 2wd which I drove for 3 years until I traded it for a 2000 LS 4WD. The car has some mild issues i.e. cheap plastic interior, lots of rattles after 4-5K miles, "loose steering" etc. I was able to hapily overlook these, as the vehicle was fun to drive, did well off road and is reasonably priced BUT...

As the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Istitute for Highway Safety finished their test my feeling have changed.

THIS VEHICLE IS A DEATH TRAP

Besides from rating it POOR in both head on and offset collisions, the Institute for highway safety actually states, "...This is the kind of crash you can't walk away from...You will survive the crash, but would have massive injuries to your legs. So you will be trapped in the car until you could be rescued".
On top of this, the vehicle has received a POOR rollover rating as well.

DO YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY A FAVOR - DO NOT BUY - IT IS VERY DANGEROUS AND THERE ARE BETTER, SAFER VEHICLES AT SIMILAR PRICES.

As for me, I dumped the 2000 LS, and now my wife and child drive an ML320 which was not that much more $, But much safer

Its japanese and looks very nice.

Weakness:

The weak cup holders and I experienced the electical problems when 3 of my tail lights went out and I got pulled over for it, luckily I only had the car for a few weeks and he let me off the hook.

I have been very impressived with this car. Interior is fantastic with the leather. Handling is excellent too. Car is built extremely study unlike the Explorers. The dealer was very nice, they did a detailed cleaning, put new tires on, filled the tank, changed the oil, and had the paint detailed for any scratches! Gas milage inst too bad at an average 20mpg. I purchased this car to carry my drums around with the massive cargo room that it has.
