Strength:

For the price I got a loaded vehicle. Didn't have leather seats, but after alternately sticking to them in two previous cars or being ice-cold in the winter, I don't miss that at all. Interior is roomy and the handles on every possible entry are fantastic when I have to run around with friends or take my Mom somewhere (hey, even at 38 you gotta look out for moms). I found this car very fun to drive. I sometimes have to do the trip back home (5-1/2 hours) or to our corporate offices (5-1/12 hours) and both seem very easy in this vehicle. It operates great in rain or snow (and living in Chicago we get both). I added a remote starter and now in Winter I don't have to wipe off the car OR shovel -- just get in and zoom off right thru the drifts. I had previously owned a Mitsubishi Galant and was glad to see that they had kept up the great engineering. The money I saved on buying used and Mitsubish I used to get a really good stereo and front (and rear) brush guards. Still came up ahead. 2001+ (and by the way, many Montero's are mid-year models so you're 2000, like mine, may really have a 2001 body) received high praize from the Highway Safetey Institute (http://www.hwysafety.org/vehicle

Weakness:

I'd like a little more power -- but then, this is an SUV and it's not surprising. I drive pretty much in the 75~85 range on the expressways and think that it handles that fine. I bought used and imemdiately replaced the tires -- which I found made a huge difference, the factory tires aren't great. I also replaced the battery after it failed (at 2 years old). I always replace factory batteries with "real" ones, so this wasn't too big of a surprise.

Moved from an Infiniti QX4 (truck) to this -- glad I made the move. Looked at Toyota, Nissan -- skipped the American brands (sorry, been there, done that, got taken).

Strength:

It looks good?

Weakness:

Like so many owners, I have YET to experience any battery problems or brake replacement issues. It scares me to thinkt that I have read all of these complaints and feel my turn is just around the corner. My major complaint is a temporary stalling problem that I have been experiencing since the SUV was around 6 months old. When making a right hand turn from a slowed down speed (20 MPH or slower) the vehicle acts as though I have put it into neutral. Within about 5-10 seconds, the power returns and I can drive for days, even weeks without the problem repeating. The dealership can not duplicate this problem (hell, neither can I, it is too random) so as far as they are concerned, there is no problem. Until I get rearended and don't have a vehicle or a life left. The next problem is the alignment. I have had two independent repair shops do alignmens inwhich they say, "the computer does not show that this vehicle is out of align." But, I have had them do it anyhow with no improvement. Now the front driver's tire is almost bald on the outside edge and I am sure to hear the dealership tell me that is normal wear and tear and not covered. This is disconserting and I feel there is a bigger p

Like so many, I fell in love with the looks and financing to find I have made a mistake. It has been pampered beyond words, had regualarly scheduled maintence checks, oil changes, and proper tire pressure inflation for the past two years. However, it has given me problems that Mitsubishi seems clueless about or should I say that they seem unwilling and uncooperative in wanting to even try to fix my vehicle.

ROOM ROOM ROOM. I like the gas mileage for such a big truck. I also like all the extra power sockets

Weakness:

NONE really except the interior style. It kinda feels like a towel

I will be honest I was looking for a Nissan X-Terra when my mother came down for a visit and rented a Montero Sport. I drove it on Friday night and Saturday and loved it so much that on Sunday I bought one. I bought this truck used at a dealership in West Palm Beach. It had 8,000 miles on it and I have driven the hell out of this thing. I love this truck. I have had no problems with it except a flat tire but I ran over a screwdriver on I-95. It has plenty of room in the back. I recently took a trip to Ocala (about 5 hours) and the truck was great. I got around 21 MPG on the highway and it handled nicely at the high speeds (90 MPH). I folded the seats down and had two teenagers and two English Bulldogs in the back very comfortably with all our luggage and a TV and a Playstation 2 back there to keep them quiet. I LOVE MY TRUCK and recommend it to everyone. The only thing I would change is the interior. It kinda rubs you the wrong way after a while in the seats. The seats are comfy but the interior kinda stinks. That is the only complaint/gripe that I have.

Strength:

Handles well. Smooth, comfortable ride (for back-seat passengers, too). Seats easy to fold down. Great music system.

Weakness:

Could use a little more pickup going uphills, but it''s only a V6. Don''t like how far forward the storage compartment between the front seats extends - it''s awkward opening it to get to the contents.

I love driving this vehicle! Great visibility with the tall outside mirrors. I like the sporty look, and I like being up a little higher than I was accustomed to before. Acceleration not quite as good uphill as was my 93 Mercury Villager van. Gas mpg so far is better than expected.

Model Reviewed: Montero Sport LS 4WD

Strength:

Comfortable, solid feel. Easy to drive. 4WD offers great traction on questionable terrain. Upright seating position. Lot''s of interior space for people and stuff, relative to exterior dimensions (compare with similar vehicles). Lot''s of clearance underneath, unlike many cross-over vehicles. Sense that, even used, it will last quite a while.

Weakness:

Wish I had the more powerful engine (personal driving taste). The rear-view mirror is positioned in the wrong place for tall people, and can''t be moved significantly. Would like a broader field-of-view out the front. A re-design of the rear seats away from the wheel well allowing them to recline more would be nice. The rear cargo area of the LS is not even with the folded rear seats - the cargo area has two levels when the rear seats are folded down. The 4WD has had some problems engaging at times, although using 4WD low first, then jumping back to 4WD high, has fixed this. I''m not completely sure if the 4WD indicator light isn''t at fault. ABS brake system works well, but I''m new to that, and the noise from the brakes has, at times, sounded weird to me. Independent brake shop tells me everything is as it should be. Some sway and noticeable undulation from quick turns and high speed lane changes, but this is the first SUV I''ve owned.

I like the vehicle alot, and am generally happy with my purchase. I purchased used, and the original miles were higher than I would have liked (34300), but the vehicle seems to have been well cared for (excellent condition). A word of caution - I used Carfax to track a few of these down in the Front Range area, all of them 2000 or 2001s. Apparently, many were originally purchased as rental vehicles and corporate lease vehicles. BEWARE - I looked at some of those, and they had many of the loose seals, rattling doors, squeaks, oil leaks, and other problems other reviewers have complained about. If you are interested in a used one, make sure the title is private-owner only. People who rent 4WDs often don''t know how to use them. I like the upright position of the front seats, the interior, and the sound system is great. The center console has a weak, plastic feel about it (as if it might break easily). My passengers have commented positively on the comfort and roominess of their ride, both front and rear seating. The controls are laid out well, now that I''ve gotten used to them. The doors have a solid feel, including the tail gate. The larger engine would be nice (I have the 3.0 liter), but I have obtained highway mileage of 21 - 22 mpg cruising at 70 mph with racks and skis on top. I can still get 19 - 20 mpg with some city driving and climbing to 10,500 ft. elevation thrown in. I can accelerate fine, with little lag, but there is some gear swapping on extended hills, and it helps to shift down to 3rd gear from overdrive to keep the speed up at elevations over 8000 ft. Everything on the vehicle works. I have replaced the original Yokohama tires (barely Colorado legal by the time I got the vehicle) and the rear brakes (I was told they were down to 20% of new, the front brakes were still 85% of new). The vehicle is comfortable to drive (9 hour trip the longest so far). It has a truck-like feel, as opposed to car-like. I feel confident it will last a long time (I prefer to drive vehicles until they fall apart).
