Strength:

Amazing handling in ALL types of conditions. I've driven 4X4s for years and NOTHING compares or even comes close to Rovie. We deliberately tried to get it stick in a snow bank and we couldn't. Put this thing in Low and it'll pull a mountain. There's also a LOT of cool aftermarket stuff that can be done to them like Old man Emu suspsension systems, air lockers...etc.

Weakness:

Not a vehicle for people who don;t pay attention to their vehicle. You gotta check the fluids and keep up on the maintenance or you'll be in for a BIG $upriSe! On the other hand, all Land Rovers are meant to be able to be worked on in the field so if you're not a complete klutz, you should be able to do the basics like oil changes, brake pads and such. British Atlantic is a good source.

OK, it's a British vehicle but don't get the idea that they suck -- leave that notion to Jaguar, Bentley and Aston-Martin. Rovers were orginally built as utiliarian vehicles and it's only recently with the introduction of the Range Rover & Discovery that that image has changed. Check out a Defender and you'll see what it's all about. Basically, all of my friends clamor to ride up to the mountains with me because they know Rovie can get through just about anything Mother Nature throws at it. Even my die-hard friends who drive Cherokees, Pathfinders, Jeeps, Land Cruisers & Infiniti QX4s all give kudos to it.

Basically, if you are willing to pay attention to the vehicle, you'll be well-served.

There's nothing that comes close to a Land Rover Product. MAYBE a Hummer but I've heard discouraging reports of them lately.

Strength:

Unique styling, amazing off road ability, largest back seat I've ever seen (bigger than a Lincoln Town Car), very comfortable, they don't hold their value so you can get them comparatively cheap.

Weakness:

British reliability, if you can't fix it yourself be prepared to pay BIG $$$, gas mileage @ 12.5 mpg average.

I was looking for a (used) SUV for around $20K that would provide me with the following; 1) comfort, 2) off road prowess, and 3) respectable towing capacity. The Range Rover County LWB fulfills all of these objectives admirably. This is my daily driver. As such, it is extremely comfortable and pleasant to drive. I also own a '72 911 that I use for track events. I plan on using the Range Rover to tow this vehicle to the track. Last but not least, this vehicle is used for "recreational" off roading. This was probably the deciding factor in choosing a Range Rover over an Expedition or Tahoe. The solid axles front and rear, coupled with the adjustable ride height and traction control, make this thing virtually unstopable. Additionally, the '95 County LWB provides you with most of the high tech gadgetry of the new Range Rover (e.g., Air Suspension), with the looks of the Classic (which I prefer).

If you want a very well appointed vehicle, with unique exterior styling, that can comfortably take you practically anywhere, AND you are handy with a wrench (or know someone who is), this your vehicle.

Model Reviewed: 4.6 HSE

Strength:

Off-road prowess, solid design, luxurious amenities, premium image

Weakness:

Premium price ($$$$), utilitarian ride and handling qualities
Frequent visits to the garage!!!

At any rate, I had checked out several vehicles & and clearly the Range Rover, has best 4x4 capability, albeit I will rarely off road, the best
luxury features presented in the "British way," and bragging rights. So I purchased a beautiful 2000 Range Rover 4.6 HSE.

Virtually unbeatable in both snob appeal and off-road talent, the 2001 Range Rover comes in two basic trim levels: 4.6 SE (new for 2001) and 4.6 HSE.

Both of these engines were upgraded in 1999 with features like an all-aluminum sump, an advanced induction system that features a "Thor" manifold, modified rocker covers, improved placement and mounting of the auxiliary equipment, new engine sensors, and an ignition and fuel management system designed by Bosch. Both models have standard twin tailpipes.
The SE makes 250 foot-pounds of torque and accelerates to 60 mph faster than the previous engine ('99 model).
The HSE model makes 222 horsepower and 300 foot-pounds of torque.

In addition to all-disc, all-terrain antilock brakes, traction control is standard on all Range Rover trim levels. The Range Rover can tow 6,500 pounds on the highway, or 7,700 pounds in low range. Under the sheetmetal is a ladder-type chassis plus an electronic air suspension system and beam axles. Rear trailing arms are made of lightweight composite material.

The Range Rover is loaded with standard equipment. That means leather and burled walnut in the interior, automatic climate controls for the driver and front passenger (with micro-pollen filtration), 10-way adjustable heated front seats with memory preset, sunroof, and, well, you get the idea. A 300-watt Alpine sound system that features a Radio Data System display, weather band and six-disc CD changer is also standard.

This year the Range Rover gets several interior upgrades including chrome trim, revised cupholders and new instrument graphics. Auto dimming exterior mirrors, body-colored bumpers and "smoked" exterior lighting add this SUVs stylish look. In addition to a stronger engine, the 4.6 HSE adds 255/55HR18 tires, five-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels, mud flaps, a leather-wrapped shifter and a cell phone. The HSE elevates the Range Rover's luxury status with power folding, heated outside mirrors, a body-colored grille, and a navigation system.

With the HSE priced well over $100,000 (CDn$) or (60 000 US$) , the Range Rover obviously isn't for everyone. Land Rover calls it "the world's most
advanced sport utility." We won't argue with that description. Given a choice, I'd prefer something on the order of a BMW M5 for ordinary highway driving. Still, if a taste for off-roading lies in your future, and a run-of-the-mill sport-utility vehicle doesn't turn you on, what better way to blast into the bush than in a Range Rover? It's not just a drive -- it's a lifestyle

These are the SUV's and cars I test drove.

BMW X5 -- Drives just like a bimmer, not a bad thing but not something I want when I drive an SUV. Seemed like a 540 with a few inches added to the
roof. Had good pickup and of course all the BMW bells and whistles.

Toyota Land Cruiser/ LX 470, This was the vehicle I wanted to get before discovering the superiority of the Range Rover. It was a great car, but seemed to generic. The interior of the vehicle had no character. The interior seemed to be cut with the same japenese cookie cutter pattern of all japanese imports. However, the car was smooth and drove comfortably. For being such a large car, the passenger compartment seemed small. And the third row of seats absurd. Mabye a 3 year old could fit back there.

I did not pursue american SUV's. They seem to be everywhere and there seems to be no distinction or ownership experience with these vehicles. Plus, most of them are just rebadged lower models with SOME bells and whistles.

Then I test drove my Rangie. A beautiful car. Interior bucket seats is as comfortable as a lazyboy. The adjustable suspension. The high driver position, the big 18 inch wheels, the Range Rover experience and the British charm.

Strength:

I have own other LR vehicles in the past. This SUV has a commanding view of the road/landscape. Off-road capabilities is unmatched. The only SUV maker that actually encourages owners to take it off-roading. Video and literature included. No Japanese or American maker will do this. Great creature comfort and EXTREMELY luxurious. Land Rover denotes adventure!

Weakness:

If you are used to owning an American car you will not like the controls eg. windows switches. It is very British. This is not a weakness it's just that this is how they build their SUVs.

Like I mentioned earlier: If over the years you owned a Japanese or American car and are used to it you will find some of the design features to be diffrent. BUT this is the uniqueness of this vehicle. It does not change its' design so it can please everyone for market share. You have to admire LR for not conforming to the buying public. Other SUVs are cookie cutters specially the American versions eg. Navigator's, Excursions, Jimmy's etc...they all look the same - just re-badge for higher price.

LR has a huge following because they are true to their heritage. I hope that Ford does not inhibit this culture.

Strength:

Nice ride for the most part. High feeling and a good command of the road. Styling is different from the rest of the crowded SUV scene.

Weakness:

Very weak engine. Gas guzzler! Leather interior feels cheap.

Drove in this car in a carpool for 8 months. The first impression was nice, but sitting in this car day in and day out lowered my initial opinion of this SUV to that of an overpriced British import. It might be good offroad, but for general urban trekking, you can find a better American or Japanese made car out there for less money to boot.

Excellent ride, Styling, Luxurious, Sound System, Cargo Space, Air Suspension.

Weakness:

Engine needs more HORSES, expensive

Absolutely the best SUV money can buy, it commands respect on the road and the ride is very comparable to that of any luxury car. The driving position is excellent and the leather quality is what I expected, but the icing on the cake would be for land rover to replace that ancient V8 so as to stay ahead of the competition and I expect they will with the up coming replacement

the ultimate bragging right. made by brits to b briggest of big, despite not being absolute biggest. tons of options, neat gate, very appropriate for sports enthusiast. wouldn't recommend using for off-road cuz of price tag(80,000). Good off road, reasonable on road. Probably seemed luxuios when new.

Weakness:

It's falling apart. Parts fell off during the test drive! And I hear that they're only good for about 80 to 100 thousand miles. Not at this price

It's plastic! I can't beleive that a vehicle in this price range rattles this much and is put together this poorly. And who wants to be on their vehicle on a weekly basis.
New, these are outragiously over priced and used, they may not run. I just don't get it. I guess it's the image thing.

TLC was better in every way except ultimate off road. It didn't have the exotic (read quircky British) look inside, but they run forever and everr
