what is all the whining about??? All cars have issues at one time or another. I, personally have not had any problems at all with my car. It now has 35k miles on it and so far so good. Ive had it for about a year and have only needed routine maintenence. Yes, factory warranty maintenence is expensive, but if you buy a land rover, is 4 or 500 bucks every 10 or 12k miles really a big deal?? How much is factory mainenence for a Mercedes? Regarding brakes: my brakes are very solid yet very sensitive. I dont need much pressure to stop the car. People drive differently under different conditions. The more you use the brakes, the more often they will need service. Also, if you tend to stop quickly, applying undue pressure, the brakes will wear out faster. Sure, there are lemons out there, but there are lemons with every make of car - sorry some of you have been so unfortunate. I was lucky. My vehicle was immaculately kept before I purchased it and it came with a service record. It is almost due for a 36k mile factory warranty inspection, so I called land rover in Bedford, NH to find out what the service consisted of and how much it would cost. The service rep was very cordial and spoke with me for about 10 minutes. I didn't feel rushed or demeaned in any way. So, before you read all of these reviews and think "Oh God, this car is awful", think about this: you have read about 15 bad reviews on a car that has been sold to tens of thousands of people. So you have about a .00001% chance of getting a lemon accroding to this web site. Not too bad. Oh, and if any auto dealer makes you feel like a 2nd class citizen, don't buy the car there - no matter what you purchase. If the ethical standard of any business establishment is less than what you expect, it should be a warning that service will likely follow suit. Go elsewhere. Also, if you don't like the interior design, don't buy the car, then complain about it. I can see my clock fine with 2 drinks in the cup holders.

Heated seats and strong high beam headlights.

Weakness:

This vehicle is completely unreliable and unsafe. Please run the other way when thinking about purchasing a Freelander. If you choose to ignore this expect transmission problems, electrical failures, head gasket, valve lifter, window regulator, loud engine noise, instrument panel problems, door locking mechanism and braking problems. The Freelander I own has been out of service for 40 days in a 3.5 year period. To make matters worse the routine service is very expensive and the customer service is virtually non existent. I will never drive another Land Rover again and I implore you to stay away from this vehicle.

Great looking, head turner. Executive and looks $20000 more than it acctually is. Performace is what you would expect, but again, with the money you have paid and the reputable manufactor from which it derives give you peace of mind you are driving a quality product.

Weakness:

nil

Bloody Great car for the price! It has executive on the front, and fun times on the back with its softtop. Anybody that bad mouths a car like this is just trying to make up for the money they have spent on it because the quality of product exceeds their driving skills ;)

Gas guzzler, in shop frequently, little headroom if you're over 6 ft

We have a LR dealer closer to us but bought the Freelander from the Wayne PA location because they had a much better deal. Harrisburg PA LR dealer will not give a loaner since we did not buy our vehicle from them. I find this to be very petty coming from a luxury dealer but had I known that it would be in the shop so often, I may have considered paying the extra money to get a loaner! We probably will not buy another LR product now that their part of the Ford family of vehicles. This vehicle has been in the shop for a wide array of problems- from brakes, headlights problems (3times), to speakers, to the rear door not opening, not to mention the various strange noises that the vehicle made. This was the first new car I've ever purchased and it has given me more problems than I ever had before. FOR FOLKS WITH CHILDREN- look elsewhere. It has VERY limited cargo space and leg room for kids in carseats.

Dealer support in Australia

Fairly pleased with the Freelander itself but not impressed with the dealer. The biggest bunch of arrogant wasters I have had the misfortune of dealing with. Had a problem with the fuel pressure sensor on the car which took 5 separate visits to the dealership to rectify. Loan car? Yes at $45AU per day... thats not a loan car thats a hire car! I am now looking to sell the car for reasons not related to the dealer of the vehicle itself and they offered me $16000AU to buy the car back, even though they have an older 2003 model currently on their forecourt for $30k, damned cheek. Thats Alto Artarmon in Sydney.

Styling. Comfort. Handling. Cache.

Weakness:

Engine a little weak. Lack of Towing Capacity. Depreciation and Maintenance worries (not realized, yet)

I bought this car for my wife. It was a heavily discounted new 2002 that we bought in 2003 so my review is from the perspective of a $22000 car, not a $30000 one. We were looking at the Honda Element EX AWD which came close to the same price but the Land Rover is much beefier looking. The styling and overall quality were good. I admit I didn't read these reviews before we bought or I may have shyed away. The car now has 20k miles after 2 years and we haven't had any problems other than a seatbelt light that came on once which was addressed by a "software update" at the dealer during routine service. The dealership has been very friendly and helpful (always providing a loaner or renting one if they didn't have one). This car rides and handles well for an SUV. The seats are comfortable and the visibility is good. We were able to find an aftermarket armrest for about $60 on ebay which made it even more comfortable. The engine needs more hp (I wish it had the v6 used in the Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute). The 5 spd auto is adequate in Sport mode (although the tiptronic is useless as the day is long). Mileage is just under 20 mpg in mixed use driving. The brakes were checked at the last service and we were told they were fine but I will not be pleased if we get hit with a bill to replace pads/rotors early. I also wish it had more towing capacity as I want to buy a boat but don't think I should have to buy a new SUV to pull it. Stock stereo is better than average.

Everything else.

Worst car ever! Have had it for just over 2 years and have to take it in for it's 4th brake job. Which is $800. The transmission is screwey. Real high RPMs and the gear change is jerky. Puny V6 doesn't get the job done. My advice is to aviod this car at all costs. The maintinance alone with empty your pockets!

Strength:

Mitzubishi SUV loaner which drives very smooth compared to the Freelander.

Weakness:

Ride and design.

Buying this car was the biggest mistake I ever made. The ride is choppy, jerky, and extremely loud. It has absolutely no acceleration, so don't try passing another vehicle unless you have plenty of space between you and the car behind you. It has move design flaws than anything I've ever seen; the gas cap is unlocked with the inition key, which is a real annoyance when you fill up 3x a week, and can't close your window while waiting for your tank to be filled in rain, snow, cold, & heat; the cup holder is located in front of the clock,so you have to move your cup to see the time; the mileage and tripometer is in the same location, so you have to switch between them to see what they are; the hood release is on the right side (passenger side) because that's where the driver's side is in England; the seat adjustments are manual, the seats are very high and can not be lowered, everyone always complains about hitting their head; the seat adjustment to move the seats forward or back are manual. The dealer knew one of my concerns was the long distance driving I do, approximately 700 miles per week. They were very quick to talk me into an extended warranty, however forgot to mention the suggested service is every 12,000 miles at just under $400, hoping there's nothing else to fix. The only compliment I do receive on the car is the color, which of course has been discontinued. Not surprising. I have also had to have two under warranty service repairs which took several days to get my car back. I would discourage anyone from buying this car.
