Strength:

Everthing but gas consumption.

Weakness:

See above.

(pre 1997 Model) - I've had my Discovery for over 4 years now. It has performed flawlessly both on and off road. However, 12 MPG on a good day (premium, no less)is a major drawback--fillups come quickly and often, at about $35.00 each.

Strength:

Styling, size, durability, off-road capabilities, etc...

Weakness:

The common theme seems to be gas, but if you did not know that before you bought it you are pretty dumb. I did not buy it for the great gas mileage.

The best 4X4 made. This is a great truck. Built like a tank but you can still take it out on the town. Those who would be its critics do not really understand what a land Rover is all about and should be driving a Rodeo or some other Japanese rip-off.

With the exception of a Land Rover Defender or a Hummer, nothing compares.

Handling, Fun to drive.Great looks. roomy.

Weakness:

Breaks lots. I had a bad engine at 75K!!! Expensive to fix. gas! when cold and driving short distance 8 mpg! on highway longtrips 14-15 mph. went on a 300 mile trip with 4 friends, they didnt like the back seat. the hump in the middle makes it umcomfortable for 3 adults to sit in back seat. I dont have seats in the far back. This didnt bother me though, i was driving!

I bought it with 71K thinking it would last me for an easy 50k more.(2 years for me). The first 2 months i owned it, i had the truck for 2 weeks. the rest of the time, it was in the shop. lots of leaks, transfer case, muffler, shocks... $5000 in repairs. luckly they were covered by the dealer but it was a huge pain getting them to do it. I have been back for the transfer case 6 times now. they rebuilt it to start and it still leaks. It keeps leaking and wont stop. They cant seem to fix it. about 5k after i bought it i noticed a knock coming from the engine. It will cost $10K to replace/fix the engine!! thats not going to happen. I sold it and bought an isuzu rodeo.
I loved the ride of the land rover. Great power (every complains but they forget it is a TRUCK!) Great on the high way. Handles excellent. Pulls pretty well. Lots of room. good leg room if you are tall, i am 6' 1" and it is the most comfortable car i have had.

Strength:

Brakes, over-built frame and other components. Built like a tank. Comfortable on long drives such as driving from Villahermso Mexico to Brownsville TX in 21 hours. The handling is tremendous on dirt roads and sand. The suspension is very, very subtle... good extension and flexibility on the corners without the frame and body flex associated with Jeeps. It handles like a go-cart on grass...no fear of rolling it whatsoever. Long enough to balance on a teeter-totter easily compared to the D-90's.

Weakness:

Cost of repairs, quality of certain components, slow acceleration.

I've owned this vehicle since new. We knew we were moving from ATL to PHX and I wanted something to get out in the desert and go camping/off-roading. I also wanted a vehicle that would last.
I was aware of the general quality of British vehicles and this one is no different but my experiences have generally been positive. The dealer in ATL really didn't do much work since we relocated to PHX fairly soon after making the purchase. The dealer in Scottsdale has been fair within their own limitations. I hate to pay their hourly rates though! :-)
I have 85,000 miles and it has never stranded me. This LR has been all over the US and down into Mexico and Belize.....from below sea level in Death Valley in the middle of the summer to almost 14,000 ft. in CO to numerous crossing of the Mojave Desert in what has become an annual trip.
Yes, the vehicle has it flaws but the best strength is that it's way overbuilt from the lug nuts to the disk brakes, the springs, the frame, etc.
If you're going to do a lot of off-roading, this is a great vehicle. If you're going to use it to run around town, get something else. It's not suited for that purpose at all.. slow to accelerate, gets hot due to solar gain via all the windows, large turning radius, etc.

This car is still a true 4x4 veichle with live axels all around. No wussy independant suspension. Built on a ladder frame it will withstand a life of corrugated sand tracks in Afrika. Permanent 4 wheel drive with discbrakes all around. A superb turbo diesel (not availeble in the US, move to Europe or Aussyland).

Weakness:

Not german quality, allthough I allready knew that when I ordered it.

There are only three true makers of expedition worthy 4x4's in my opinion. Land Rover, Mercedes G-wagen and Toyota Land Cruiser. If you want a car for on road use go with a freelnder or another mini SUV. I bought this truck for daly use _and_ 4x4 expeditions to remote places. It has not given me any serios problems due to it's not to great quality. I did not expect German quality. The English people make things there own way, accept it or buy somthing else. Don't buy this car for its on road ability but its off road prowes. It will kick any stock Jeep's ass any day.

Strength:

Landrover means quality. i have never once had a mechanical or physical problem with the vehicle. Just took it in for its 45000 mile inspection and the car was problem free. Huge trunk space, comfortable seats, amazing towing capactity for its size, and is unbeatable in wintery conditions.

Weakness:

Theres only two major problems with the car, it handels poorly and it drinks gas!

This is one amazing SUV. I'd challenge anyone to find a better car in its class. Everything about this sport ute is quality. Great looking and its performance is unmatchable.

Similar Products Used:

It can probly be compared to Jeeps Grand Cherokee or a Ford Explorer limited. I've driven both and the LandRovers blows them both out of the water. They dont even come close to my Discovery. I highly recommend the car!

Strength:

Good Seats

Weakness:

considering the size of the vehicle, interior space is quite poor.
Paint scratches when you sneeze on it.
Tires will dry rot within 1 year. We have a lot of heat/rain.
Lots of rattles

This truck is good looking, however, it has some problems. First the cross section on the windshield is too low and obstructs vision. Constantly have to tilt your head to see if there is a green light. Also, the pillars in the rear quarter panels also create severe blind spots.

Quality is just O.K. Lots of little problems that never go away despite the service depts best attempts to fix them. Odd things like service lights popping on and off. It always seems to be a "bad sensor."

The overall ride is compliant but I've noted a drop in comfort since the truck has aged. As with all trucks, its gone from a nice tight ride to a bouncy-rattling ride.

If your looking for a quick truck (I know an oxymoron), dont buy this one. The only "quick" Rover truck is the 4.6 This one doesnt have enough juice @190hp. It is slow. The weight to HP ratio is very poor.

Just after leasing this vehicle Land Rover is now offering a $399 lease. I guess its a good deal for that price. But this is my first and last LR. If you love the look of this truck, great. But there are so many more better values, and better performing 4X4's.

Similar Products Used:

You cannot compare Land Rovers to the new Toyota Seqoya (sp?), 4 Runner or Suburban. The Tahoe/Suburbam come with an option for entertainment units. Even the American Made Trucks hold up better than these Brit Trucks. Do not get caught up in the Land Rover Hype/Image. If you want to feel macho go buy a fedora. Its cheaper and will last longer.

^Holds up well in an accident

Weakness:

^truck has too many odd problems/poor quality control.
^consumes a lot of gas, but it is heavy.
^seating space is small all around.
^very expensive maintenance

Discovery looks wonderful. Not a bad truck, not a great one either.
Got a good deal on my truck. Guess Land Rover is trying to blow them out.
This is my first, and my last Land Rover.

Similar Products Used:

^Acura MDX- has more interior room, better creature comforts. however dealers charging a premium.
^Toyota 4Runner- loved that truck. should have gotten another one instead of Land Rover.
^Chevy Tahoe/Suburban- these have more room but same quality problems as Land Rover.
^Toyota Sequoa- very nice truck for the money. tough to maneuver in tight spaces.

Stengths? A good strenght is getting out of this lease. Party in my garage when it's over!

Weakness:

Where do I start? Electrical problems, engine problems, suspension problems and there is a leak! A leak from the sunroof that makes all the front seats wet! The service department lacks any intelligence!

My overall impression is not good. This car is the biggest P.O.S I've ever owned. Cant stand this truck. It eats a lot of gas and is in the shop day in and day out. The amount of problems with this truck is insane!! I am very happy for those who have good Land Rovers but I am not so lucky. Help me Obi-Wan you are my only hope!

Strength:

Capability off-road, smooth ride (I removed my sway bars for articulation, and still feel good on a cloverleaf). Completely solid feel. Great styling.
Lots of windows.

Weakness:

Gas Mileage, high cost of parts, attractive enough that people want it as
a soccer-mom mobile.

The Discovery, like every Land Rover model, is over-engineered in nearly every way. My truck (with winch, skidplating, and other accessories) is pushing 3 tons. It has the smoothest ride of any (real) SUV I have ever driven. I have had it in places in the Rockies that would make an X5 run for its garage and a Jeep "oil" itself in fear. Granted, it guzzles gas. If you want a city truck, don't get one... (plus you will be a yuppie who doesn't use it like it should be used). It also has a higher maintainance cost than most lesser vehicles, but performance costs, and this truck eats the competition in the hills.

Jeep Cherokee sport - Flimsy little toy compared to the rover.
Ford Explorer - top-heavy junk.
