Strength:

great styling & balance of cost / accessories

Weakness:

harsh ride on the interstate

Came very close to buying a Liberty. No question it has excellent styling and great pricing with current rebates. Decided to rent one before making the commitment. After about 60 miles on the interstate, it became clear it was not the car for us. While it drove well in the city, it is much too stiff / harsh a ride for extended interstate driving. Mileage really wasn't all that bad for this weight of vehicle - a consistant 21.4 mpg over 1200 miles - primarily highway. Ended up with a Honda Pilot - love it, except for the column shift. Don't really need off road use & don't like a sunroof, so it ended up a perfect choice for us with respect to cost / accessories. Much prefered the interior design of Pathfinder, but headroom is very tight & pricing rather high, even with rebate.

Similar Products Used:

Sante Fe - too soft a ride & excessive roll upon braking Pathfinder - limited head and foot space Escape / Tribute - excessive tire / road noise Subaru Outback, Legacy & Forester - whiney engine - high road/tire noise Toyota Highlander - dislike interior design & all available cars had loads of high cost extras.

Strength:

Price, interest rate, good resale value, big powerful engine, great sound system nice looks inside and out, great in the snow, functionality (combines cool looks of TJ and function of Grand Cherokee)

Weakness:

bad gas milage (but I knew that when I bought it, so I'm not complaining), tiny glove box

Well I have intentionally waited atleast 6 months to post a review on my Liberty because my last car (Jetta) was great for the first 6 months then it fell apart. I have posted a reveiw on my VW Jetta (posted July 23, 2003), I urge you to read it!(but to sum it up, VW is Crap, and VW service people are stupid). Anyway on to the Jeep. I freekin love this vehicle. Funny story, I picked it up from the dealership in January 2004 and that day just happened to be the worst snow storm we have had in 5 years. Well the dealership put it in 4 wheel and I motored home. While others were slipping and sliding and getting stuck, I just cruised home. The rest of the winter was horrible and I commute everyday through back roads which don't get plowed and I felt so safe. The only problem I had twice was when I hit ice on a really windy day on an open road and the back end slipped out from behind me. No worries, it was very easy to regain control. I have only had one mechanical problem with it, the drivers window is rattling when half-way down. Other then that it has been very reliable, awsome acceleration, small turning radius, great for hauling stuff, and the price! WOW! An SUV with 4x4, big v6, 6 disc cd changer with premium speakers, steering wheel radio controls, sun roof, steel wheels, abs, etc.... Also this suv was more expensive then my Jetta but the payments are lower!(way better interest rates). The dealership was pretty good to, except for one small disagreement on closing. But even after I signed the papers, they phoned me to tell me that they got me a lower interest rate (that doesn't happen often) I test drove and/or looked at pretty much every small suv on the market including the Escape (not bad), Tribute (bland), RAV4 (too girly, and only 4 cylinder), CRV (sooo girly & gutless, felt like I should wear pink and put my hair in poney tails), Mitsubishi (rigid options packages), Highlander (grandpa mobile), Sorento (impressed, but question quality), and finally the Xterra (nice, bad interest rates). It came down to the Liberty and Xterra, but the price and superior options of the Jeep swayed my decision. I have to give a big thanks to all those who posted reveiws on the Liberty, because that was a big part of my final decision. They can say all they want in their fancy commecials, and you can read all the consumer reports you want, but it’s reveiws like these from everday people that matter.

I bought my Liberty in April and Love it. I agree that the gas mileage isn't great but I can't cmpare it to my CR-V that I had. Comparing the two is like cpmcaring apples and oranges. I feel mush more secure in the Libertyu thatn I ever did in the Honda. In the last week I have notice what seems to be a hesitation when driving along at a crusing speed or excellerating. The vehicle seems to buck a little however there is no change in the RPM's on the tech. I have 6700 miles on it andthought that I must be imagining it. However, my husband and I were drving up the coast over the weekend and when it happened he felt it and thougth I was jerking the gas pedal. HAs anyone else had this problem? I am going to be bringin it in for and oil change and will mention it then as well. Over all I love it. I have owned a wrangler in the past b ut hated the noise of it. The Liberty gives you a fun, sturdy ride without all the wind noise. Would recommned to couples or singles. Can be hard getting in and out of the back seat if you are big. More than enough room for me and my husband.

Options on the steering wheel. Easy access to the back end when loading and unloading items.

Weakness:

Glove compartment is very small. Steering wheel jerks back and forth when driving if you are not used to driving it. Although, I do not have a problem with this.

I really like my Jeep better than any other suv made. I feel the price is right.Even a brand new Liberty is in my price range compared to some of the suvs.I am only 5 foot 3 inches and I feel very comfortable driving this vehicle. I recently thought about trading up to a Chevy Trailblazer because my husband is a Chevy man. I took the Trailblazer for the weekend only to realize they are big and bulky. The back end closed very rough compared to my Liberty and it just wasn't made as nice as my vehicle. I didn't want to give up the many options that my liberty has. I like having all of the controls on my steering wheel. I can turn up the radio, change cd songs, and set my cruise all without taking my hands off of the steering wheel. All in all, I am very very impressed with my Liberty.

I test drove a Trailblazer. It was not at all what I expected. I would not own one of those suvs.

Weakness:

> Seat heating controls on the door side of the seat - would be better on the center console. > Rear seats do not fold absolutely flat. > Mud guards not standard

My wife & I each purchased identical 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited Edition vehicles in May 2003. Overall, the Liberty vehicles have been GREAT. They are fun to drive and real go-getters, both in town and on the highway. We drive a round trip of over 1000 miles about every other month to see our daughter and grandson in Canada, so we alternate vehicles to keep the miles about the same. We currently have about 9,000 miles on each Liberty. We have had absolutely no problems with my wife's car. Mine has a "whine" in the drive train when driven over about 60 MPH, which the dealer is currently researching a cure for. Otherwise, no problems! For the price, this vehicle has just about everything you could ask for in a mid-sized SUV, including: > Selec-Trac 4WD System with 4 Operating Modes. > 6-Way Power and Heated Driver & Passenger Seats > Mini Overhead Console with Garage Door Opener, Trip Computer, Vehicle Information Center, Compass, Outside Temperature, etc. > Deep Tinted Glass > Power Heated Mirrors W/Driver Auto-Dim > Auto-Dimming Interior Rearview Mirror > Six Premium Infinity Speakers > AM/FM Stereo W/6 CD Changer > Steering Wheel Mounted Audio Controls > Steering Wheel Mounted Cruise Controls > Premium Leather Interior > Security Alarm with Keyless Entry Remote, Including Rear Window > Aluminum Wheels, All Season Tire Group, W/Hard Molded Spare Tire Cover > 3-Way Power Sunroof > 4-Wheel Anti-Lock Disc Brakes > Great Heating & Air Conditioning System > Speed Sensitive Power Door Locks > Child Seat LATCH Anchor System > All Window Controls on the Center Console > Handy Storage of Owners Manual Above Clove Box > Plus much more that you have to see.

Great power and comfortable ride. Nice interior. Simple and clean. Sunroof is a bonus. The Heater kicks ass.

Weakness:

Fuel Economy. Clear Coat! A little loose on ice. I thought it would manage better but its a short bus.

My first Jeep and I love it so far. Only 2 major complaints. 1) Fuel economy 2) Clear Coat on Black is not good. Buy the silver if you want a clean look. You cannot clean this thing with a chamois. Nothing but scratches. Looks sweet when you get it clean and waxed tho. Pulls a bit to the right most of the time. However, it can pull to the left if the wind is on you. When its cold, the transmission slams into second gear a little rough. Not sure if this is normal. Had it offroading and its fantastic. Held my own with some Wranglers. Watch your clearance tho. I recommend a cheap 2 inch lift kit otherwise get the skid plates or both :). No matter what the TJ/YJ/Wrangler/Rubicon guys claim, everything can get stuck. Obviously, if your on stock tires, your not going to do so well. 17" chrome rims are a nice touch on the Black. They are plastic covers! Which is actually a good thing because if you mess them up offroading they are only $60 to replace. Leather interior is nice with heated seats. Black carpet is always a bad thing. I wish they had plastic liners you could pop in and out to clean and keep carpet nice. Oh why oh why did I buy black?

Fuel Mileage Brakes Rear Ends

An awesome vehicle in terms of ride and handling up to the 10000 km mark with the exception of fuel mileage. Fuel mileage was 11-18mpg on light highway driving despite keeping the rpms below 2200. Several calls to Chrysler at 3000 km but was told that vehicle would achieve better if it were well maintained. This was prior to its first oil change. The dealership told me there was a break in period of 6000kms and then mileage would improve. At 6000 they said 10000, at 10000 they have told me it is 25000km. Bought the vehicle with eyes open... traded in a 1998 Cherokee Limited that consistently achieved 26+mpg. (been told I drive like an old lady, straight highway, no tickets etc.) At the 11000km mark the transfer case seals blew in my driveway despite vehicle has never been off road. Over a 900km period, the slinger has been replaced 3 times. There was an eggbeater sound below speeds of 50km/h. When the dealer last replaced the rear ends were rebuilt as well. The fluid that they drained out was black and burnt smelling. The metal inside was fairly polished where metal on metal rubbing has been going on. After the last repair I now have resonance at speeds above 50km. Ball joints have been replaced with manufacturer's recall. Grinding noise has developed upon reversing and brakes have become intermittent. I am experiencing extended stopping distances when brakes have failed and have hit the front of my garage. Master cylinder and proportioning valves have been replaced but intermittent problem of not stopping (on dry pavement) has resurfaced. Dealership is not able to fix... can't isolate problem and due to its intermittent behaviour can't fix. Was told by the service manager that this is how vehicles function without anti lock brakes. Since they last repaired (and I use the term loosely) the brake pedal now goes straight to the floor and feels spongey... they assure me that they have bled the lines of air. I have gone from excellent but intermittent brakes to absolutely dangerous all the time. I have begun the process of a buyback through the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan (CAMVAP). The vehicle has sat in my garage for 3 months while I make payments on it. My wife refuses to ride in the vehicle and I am afraid to drive it.

Weakness:

Unique front and back shapes make it hard to find custom tubular bumpers Manual transmission makes some funny noises, though they don't seem to affect performance City gas mileage is low

We bought this car to take with us on assignment in Ecuador. Since arriving, it's been driven from sea-level in dry, desert conditions to 15,000 feet elevation in the Andes. The engine handles great in the tropical climate, the transmission is geared right to provide passing power on some pretty steep hills, and the interior is comfortable enough for long drives. I bought the tropical radiator, which has definately kept the engine from overheating even when idling. I've driven through some pretty deep road flooding without any loss of control. The big gas tank (19.5 Gallons) is great for long trips. The bumbers take soft bumps very well with little or no marking. THe turning radius is incredible. All in all, a great buy
