Strength:

ITS A JEEP FOR PETE's SAKE.
best off-road SUV made. HANDS DOWN.

Weakness:

speed. if you want a fast car, buy a mustang!

I purchased my grand cherokee (ZJ to my fellow JEEPERS).

it has been my extra appendage since the day i bought it. i knew nothing about being a Jeeper, but i know a lot about cars. it rides great and cant take a lickin, thats for sure. i have the I6 4x4 with select-trac. the general census is that the I6's get virtually the same gas mileage and the V8's, which is very close to true. the difference is only about 1MPG, which is probably worth the extra speed, but the I6 can go anywhere on the trail the V8 can, and it worthy of quality on-road performance.

Strength:

Styling and overall looks. Inline 6 seems to be performing well so far. Comfortable seating and stylish interior.

Weakness:

Have had some problems with paint and clearcoat. Have made two trips to dealer to correct/repaint affected areas. Passenger side window stopped working after 2 months, replaced window motor. Cooling system inadequate like a Sebring I once owned and traded in. Replaced wiper blades after 3 months, seemed too soon. Transmission clunks in reverse. Have had to replace fuel injector within first month.

Paid 26K. Skeptical about recommmendations, but would like to give the JGC a little more time to prove itself. Chrysler needs to get on the ball with quality control. Remember the next inspector is the CONSUMER.

POWER >> 5.2 V-8 rocks, no questions asked. Super interior, great sound system, really comfortable.

Weakness:

The damn transmission races and misses gear shifts.
***If anyone has a fix for this, please email me.***

Yep, this beast pulls to the right, but not so much that I cannot control it. Just deal with it.
My big problem, and the reason I visited this site, is the transmission. When the Jeep is cold, the tranny races and misses its gear shifts. I live in CA; I hate to think what it's going to do when I move to New Hampshire next year! My mechanic charged me 1700 bucks to do some sort of exploratory surgery, but all that accomplished was a failed fuel pump one week later. "Ah, yes sir, that'll be another $900."
The temperature fluctuates here between 45 and 72 degrees, but somehow that was enough to cause a thermal crack in the front windshield. Oh well, another $252. The driver side seat heater is kaput, and I know my wife will want that fixed before we head into the New England winters. I hope the quadra-trac is worth it, because otherwise I'm scared to take it off road, for fear of busting up my tranny even worse.
All that on top of the exorbitant periodic maintenance charges leads me to wonder why I'm working on my master's in applied physics; hell, I should have been a Chrysler mechanic or a plumber.

None to date :)

I cannot say enough about this vehicle. It has greatly surpassed all of my expectations as far as quality and performance. The Jeep has some of the best seats in the business, with 10 way power adjusts, and that nice heat option. Highway trips are a breeze, and the truck goes where you point it with little effort required to keep it on the straight and narrow. The solid axles provide an excellent highway ride, and I notice no difference between them and the IFS setup on our Explorer as far as comfort. I tend to be picky about my vehicles when it comes to squeaks and rattles, and thus far they have been non-existant.

Jeeps are notorious for their off-road prowess, and my 5.9 limited will attest to this fact. Gotta love those REAL solid axles! The truck has a tremendous amount of torque, 345 ft/lbs, and awesome get up and go for a 2 ton SUV (approx 7.0 sec 0-60). To cool the monster under the hood there are snarling hood vents, and a monsterous exhaust tip. I love these touches. The Shining platinum paint job doesnt hurt either. The sound system is the best I have ever heard from the factory - 10 speaker infinity gold. Gotta love those hand controls on the steering wheel. I listed the spare tire location as a plus, becuase I personally would rather pull it out of the cargo bay rather than crawl underneath a vehicle on a cold rainy night. However, there are better places for it, like the under-the-cargo-bay-area that they chose on the 99+WJ's.

I would highly recommend this extremely off-road capable, highway luxury cruiser to anybody in the market for a quality, high end, luxury SUV. I look forward to many more trouble-free and exhilerating miles with my 5.9.

Strength:

It is a great off road machine in luxury trim. It rides off road like a fat Cadillac does onroad. The 4.7 V8 is fast with a nice rumble. The spare Tire is sweet, matching wheel and tire under the rear cargo deck. Infiniti Gold system is nice. The CD changer doesn't skip on the roughest of dirt roads. One of the best looking SUV's on the road, especially when compared to the newer ones coming out now. It is a good size rig. The turning radius is awesome. Quadra drive has been sweet thus far.

Weakness:

Instead of posting the same negatives as all of the previous owners I'll post the solutions I have came up with for them. That way we'll get thing done instead of complaining about them.

1. It does pull to the right! We all know that by now. I fixed this problem by leaving my mountain bike on the left side of my roof rack for counteractive wind resistance then I inflated the right side tires to 50 psi. problem solved.

2. The drive train does whine! I solved this problem by using my imagination. It kinda sounds like a gear drive on a souped up big block. So now it's cool that it whines. Or use that awesome Infinti system and drown out the sound.

3. The interior materials are cheap and scratch easy. Solution either never touch the interior panels or spray the whole thing with Rhino Lining.

4.The AC makes a weird humming noise. solution, live in the artic.
5.The seat heater goes into hyper mode sometimes, live in the tropic.
6. It goes through gas like crazy. solution live in the Middle East.

7.The brake pedal is in an awkward position for taller people. Solution, don't use the brake, I hear the rotors like to warp anyway. (not on my list as of yet.)

8. The E brake is in a weird spot on the passenger side of the console. Solution, make sure a good looking girl is always sitting there unless your into rubbing guys legs.

Jeep's new motto "People who drive loggin roads don't care about details."

Stereo, Looks, Ride, Interior and handling. I have yet to use the 4 wheel drive system, but from doing my research I have read jeep has the best available.

Weakness:

Brakes, fuel economy could be better although not bad, and spare tire in back takes up to much space.

This is the greatest vehicle I have ever owned in my life and I am very proud to own one. The off road capability is great, the looks are great, and the handling on the highway is great as well. I have had no trouble with anyhting as of yet, I only have 46,000 miles on it and is definetly going strong. I would not own any other SUV then a Grand Cherokee. This vehicle gives you the versatility that others do not. I dont even consider a Navigator, Escalade, or Excursion etc an SUV, that is nothing you can or would want to take in the middle of the woods! If you do, you must have a screw lose. I would highly recommend a Grand Cherokee to anyone thinking of buying one. I personally like the 93-98 model year better, but I would also like to have a newer version someday!

Power, good looks, nice amenities on interior.

Weakness:

All listed below occurred before 36,000 miles this vehicle is babied never been off road.

Poor paint quality, ugly spots developing on hood and roof.
Differentials have design flaw. Have been replaced 3 times.
High pitch whine from drive train.
Poor brakes replaced under recall.
Clunking suspension. Dealer cannot seem to fix.
Transfer case leak.
Sunroof leaks.
Weak sway bar links.
Broken motor mounts.

Dealer experience has been good at trying to repair problems.
I giuve the Jeep just an average rating. If I did not have extended warranty, costs for repairs would not be acceptable.

Will not purchase another Jeep based on reliability problems.

This Jeeps ability to fit in at the mall parking lot and at the same time get through some of America's best scenic off road trails is amazing.

Weakness:

Could use a smidge more cargo room.

I consider this vehicle one of my best buys. Of course it gets me where I want to go, but it also got me out of the house. I've seen parts of this country that I would not normally have access to in regular vehicle, or most other SUV's for that matter. Never in my life has a vehicle given me so much freedom.

Love it in every way. Great comfort, smooth riding and handling, awesome stereo system, very-well thought out and easy to use accessories and options. Dual-air is a great feature. Power to spare with the V8. Truly a pleasure to drive!

Weakness:

Nothing found yet, nothing at all.

Still pretty new but so far not a single problem or quirk. Fit and finish were perfect, no "sample defects". Reliablility has improved a lot on this model the past couple model years. Meanwhile, some of the competition has gotten much worse.

Have owned Ford Explorers as well as a Blazer a few years back. None compare to the Jeep, not even the new '02 models. The Jeep is incredibly fun to drive, moreso than any other car I've owned in 25 years or so...
