Jeep Cherokee
Strength:
Strait axles one Dana 44 stock upfront, A simple 6cly inline, Low cost replacement parts, And A family of jeepers who hate to pass you up if you break down!
Weakness:
Payments, Gas mileage, RearHatch latch that loosens up over time, And might not open if vehicle is on angle, This rear hatch also wears paint on the roof leading edge due to it being up above roof line. Window switches when full of dust might not allow window operation, A exhaust manifold that GM should replace for all of us(they crack after 100,000 miles), Seat frames that will crack where the swivel and seat bun frame meet (look under that fabric toe kick on the back of your seats), No repaceable fuel filter, And a water pump that seems to be missing one more bolt to keep it from leaking(but the right mechanic can help with silicone)----But I do love it! This is my first new car. I was drawn to a jeep due to my previous intrest in four wheel driving. Chilly Pepper"love the band" Red 4.0L 4dr 4x4 with power all over. I then in my lack of finacial stability decided to drop $5,000 dollars on a 6" Skyjacker "rockready" lift running with 33x12.50 BFG Tires. And have been looking for new ways to destroy this wonderfull 4x4. I have failed to demolish most of it's still stock componets. This 99' has 140,000 miles on it and is still pulling it's own. It's sad that this model has been lost to "wish I were a 4x4" type SUV's. |

Great Performance and Great Gas Mileage. Winter driving traction is great.Love the White Color. Can bearly findit in a snowy parking lot.
Weakness:
Nothing At All Well we bought this Stone White Cherokee with the 4.0 powerhouse engine. A/C Tilt Cruise A/T 4x4. has 129,000.00 miles but has been well maintained. We changed the Oil to Mobile 1 full synthetic with mech- anics recomendation. Has bee 1500 miles since and does not use any at all. This 4.0 is a Screamer Engine in fact the Local West Virginia State Police Deatachment has one equppied with that engine. They claim they have persued and caught High Performance cars on the local 4 lane at well over 110 mph. Due I doubt them ?? Would you? Gas mileage falls between 20-21 mpg in town and 21-23 on the highway. Cruise control is deadly accurate within 1 mph. Regret buying this unit "NO" Similar Products Used: NONE |

4 door Country 4wd automatic Selec Trac
Strength:
Versatile, maneuverable, goes anywhere. Very reliable and low repair/parts costs. Strong engine/drivetrain.
Weakness:
Pre-96 brakes are very weak. Bad gas mileage for the size of the vehicle. Some electrical issues, but not too bad. I've had my Cherokee for 2 years now. It's been a good vehicle, with minimal problems. The engine is fairly bulletproof, and the automatic is known for lasting a long time (if properly maintained). We're talking about 200,000 miles plus. That being said, people need to understand that this is an old design. The suspension/drivetrain dates back to the 70's and can be somewhat of a shock to those expecting a smooth, noise-free ride. This truck *will* make noise. Clunks and pops are the norm. It has solid axles that really don't do so well on the highway. But, with a few minor modifications, this truck is practically unstoppable offroad. It was intended to be a 'do anything, go anywhere' type of truck...but still have pavement manners to a degree. Also, due to the older engine design, don't expect to get any sort of gas mileage. I typically see 15-18mpg during the summer, somewhat less in the winter. Ironically, the Tahoe 350 gets the same MPG's. One of the big reasons the truck is so popular is it's size. You can comfortably park this anywhere you want. Visibility is great and the corners are well defined, so you know where the end of it is. Turning radius is fantastic. I can usually do a u-turn on a residential street. In conclusion, if you are looking for a good, reliable small SUV that has true 4wd, definitely look at these. The '98-99 models are considered some of the best, so look for those if you can. Definitely get at least the 91-up models with the HO engine, as there are several improvements starting with those. Also, of the two transfer cases, the Selec Trac is better with the added full-time 4wd option that can be used on pavement. Similar Products Used: Subaru 4wd wagon, Audi quattro |

Engine (in-line six). 20 mpg highway mileage (with auto transmission!), strong, dependable.
Weakness:
City mileage is poor (but after all it's an SUV). I bought it used. From time to time I'm thinking about buying a new mid-size SUV, and guess what: there's NOTHING I'd exchange my old Cherokee for! The new Liberty? Give me a break (ugly, less reliable, heavier, more thirsty). Xterra? Underpowered and thirsty. Small, car-based SUVs? Yesterday I've seen a CR-V struggling in the snow. Here is my offer to Daimler-Chrysler: I can right now buy a new Cherokee. Oh, you guys don't make them any more? IMHO the decision to stop the production wasn't very smart. |

Weakness:
Gas Mileage but compare to most other its the champ The Cherokee was a great suv all it's life with us Its little V4 had lot's of power for the wood in British Columbia that vehicle was NOT pampered it was used alot for trips from Powell River B.C to Vancouver. IT ONLY TWICE IN A 12 YEAR LIFE BROKE DOWN ON US. I plan to own a Cherokee when im older And I don't know why people complain about the backseat who mainly sits there??? THE KIDS TO ME it was very comfy back there it had way more room the my father 1981 Chev Silverado And we were never cramped with suit cases do to it spacious trunk! This SUV wasnt some big suv for show it alway took you up the mountain then down again with it 4X4 Power the Jeep is missed but as I hear it was bought buy a guy who had a 68 Wagoneer in great shape! My Parents loved the car too my mom was never embarresed to get in it like the rusty truck! Similar Products Used: Chev Silverado 1981 Great Truck never ever broke down! Not made any more. Not so comfortable in the rear seat. This is the best all-purpose vehicle I have ever owned. Great higway performance, above average gas milage and incredible off-road capability make it an awesome choice for every occasion. This vehicle is VERY dependable and easy to perform routine maintenance on. Similar Products Used: Chevy S-10 Blazer |

No longer in US production - Chinese are producing vehicle with good looking grill options. Greatest car ever. No particular problems and there is more than 250,000 miles on the car - 65,000 when purchased 14 years ago. Some rust, but repaired at local body shop, interior is new like, engine and drive train are tight and well performing. Radio gave out some time ago - got replacement installed. |

Now that repairs have been made, it is a sure footed 4 wheeler and is great for plowing snow in a small area
Weakness:
Steering system - Mine was an easy fix, others are not as lucky. Many serious problems. I bought the jeep used with 92,000 miles to use for around town and to plow snow in my driveway. I made it 3 miles from the dealership when the front brake caliper froze up. One week later the fuel pump went. Had to have the 4.0 engine rebuilt due to a bad valve. The steering stabilizer went bad resulting in "death wobble" that would scare a stunt driver. Research indicates this is a common problem. It rides rough and is cheaply built.
