Strength:

Quick, handles well, looks cool and cheap for an SUV

Weakness:

Front axle bearing went out and driver power windows actuator broke(less than 6 mo old). Bumpy ride and a gaz guzzler for a small SUV.

I will probably never buy another American engineered vehicle again. Next will be Nissan, Toyota or similar.

Strength:

good price/value for a used vehicle will get over 200,000 miles easily w/o engine overhaul. plenty of power in the 4.0 L model. fairly easy to work on. good body construction survived a crash at >40mph with no personal injuries(broadsided a driver making illegal left hand turn on highway)

Weakness:

paint jobs are questionable. had an 89 jeep cherokee laredo with manual transmission and the clutch hose would break because its a rubber hose near a heat source(fixed it by wrapping metallic tape around it).

my first jeep was involved in a >40mph crash and i walked away from that one so i'm sold on its construction. i've seen jeeps in a rollover and the passenger compartment was intact. i have no trouble with acceleration passing vehicles. its definitely not a gas mizer. and both jeeps i bought with 80k miles and have had only minor repairs after 170k miles

Strength:

Nice looks, roomy
Sturdy frame

Weakness:

Have had multiple repairs (25 total)on this car
Engine had to be replaced at 50K
Shaky, noisy ride
Not reliable

I would never recommend a Jeep to anyone. This car has had more problems than anything else I have driven. After the warranty was over Jeep paid for a new engine due to faulty part, but wouldn't buy back the car. The airbags did not activate when I was in an accident.

Strength:

1. Power for a v6
2. Warms up/defrosts in 0 degree weather in about 5 minutes
3. 4WD makes blizzard driving completley controlable, getting stuck in snow/ice does not exist for this vehicle
4. A/C pumps ice cold
5. Fun as hell to drive offroad (i should know)
6. Easy as hell to upgrade (i should know, powerchip, offroad/racing shocks+springs, cold air induction, performance exhaust)
7. Paint/finish very reliable
8. Handling at high speeds is good

Weakness:

Worst qualities would have to be the unreliable transmissions on these things. The last one on my 96 sport broke due to someone retarded (my freind) popped it into 4wd while tires were spinning up an ice hill. Although nothing at all has gone wrong on my 99. Crappy stock speakers.

Overall good SUV, reliable, powerfull, gas guzzling fun for all!

Strength:

-Strong engine. Wide range of torque
-Classic looks
-Ability to go through snow
-Great erron runner.
-Ample storage room, groceries, hay, grain, etc...

Weakness:

-Poor designed back seat, Seat belts always in way when lowering back seat
-Lots of wind noise at all speeds
-Develops rattles in short time

1992 and 1995 were great. Very dependible. 1997 and 2000 developed several problems that actually left family stranded on road side 4 times. Dealership was very helpful and supportive. Took care of all issues 1)bad battery (1997) 2)gas sending unit (2 times on 1997), blown engine at 15,000 miles on 2000????

All issues were under warranty. No dispute from dealership and promply rapaired.

Not dependible enough considering quality problems in the past few years.

Sadly went to another brand after 8 years of driving 4 of the vehicles.

Awesome vehicle for any terrain. Handles snow like nothing. Excellent styling. Torquey engine leaves other SUVs (even though this isn't a SUV, its a jeep!) in the dust.

Strength:

Drivetrain, 4.0l Torque, and comfortable interior.

Weakness:

None

By far the best vehicle I have ever owned. The solid axles and solid drivetrain make this vehicle stand above the market's current offereings. I plan to never get rid of this vehicle. The XJ isn't an SUV, by the way, it's a Jeep!

Chevy Blazer: not worth a dime, on road or off. Dodge Dakota 4x4, not bad but still no XJ. Jeep Wrangler: Close, but I still like the hard metal top and better road manners.

Torquey Engine.

Weakness:

Reliability, maintenance costs, ride quality, ride noise, braking system, gas mileage, RATTLES!!, handling, could go on...

I was recently lucky enough to get into an accident with my Cherokee POS and subsequently rid myself of it. I really can't blame anyone but myself for purchasing it, nobody put a gun to my head, at the time I needed to get rid of my Wrangler which I really had good luck with. The problems began a week after I drove my Cherokee off the lot, I bought it used with 50,000 miles on it. Water pump, 4wd system, brakes, radiator, cracks started in dash and speedometer housing at about 55,000 miles, windshield leaked, both front doors needed to be re-connected to the door posts at separate times as they were literally falling off the truck (Jeep said it was indeed a problem in '95 but I of course, had to foot the bill). The steering wheel despite a few alignment attempts still needed to be pointed at 2 o'clock to go straight down the road. When it became humid or precipitated outside, my rear brakes would lock up and skid under very normal stopping situations. Dealers, and brake specialty shops all assured me that everything was fine. I really enjoyed looking like a 16 yr old kid coming to a stop with the vehicle pitched sideways.

I should say that the 4.0l inline 6 is a strong motor and the truck was more than capable in the mountains and off road. I also really like the styling and turning radius offered by the Cherokee Sport. The problem with my Cherokee was everything else was falling apart at a rate that was rapidly depleting my beloved savings account. I was able to live with the antiquated design and lack of bells and whistles, but I could not deal with being left stranded and the uneasy feeling I got everytime I ventured out of my neighborhood for fear of a break-down.

I have since purchased a 95 Tacoma x-cab and can't say enough about the ride, design, fit and finish, etc. as compared to my Jeeps of past. This has been a point of frustration in my life because I finally caved in and purchased a Japanese vehicle. I feel like a sell-out, but just didn't want anymore headaches.

I guess if someone got a GREAT deal on a cherokee and isn't bothered by nagging problems go for it. If you are a meticulous person and appreciate quality engineering I would say run away from a Cherokee.

. . . . At 165K miles I still feel chills knowing that the vehicle still runs and performs well above other competitors. However, it is shame that some people think that it is a lessor vehicle because of the Chrsyler element at times. The vehicle set new standards and is evidenced by the number of SUVs now on the road today. On the introduction of the modern SUV (circa 1984) Jeep cherokee was it. Then Ford .... then others...why do you think that everybody is trying to keep up?
