Strength:

Power
Go anywhere
Easy to park
Classic looks
Four wheel drive

Weakness:

Cramped rear seat
Interior needs cubby holes to store misc.
ABS brakes not common and expensive as an option.

Not perfect but it works.
Sport package in Black looks best.
I pull a camper at 80mph all over Tennessee, both up and down hills. No problem!
Only a leaking speedo sender and a shorted fog light switch to date. Happens to the best of them. Covered under warranty. Dealer service has been great.
My wife drives it in traffic every day. She loves the power and outward visibiity. Good combination of utility and sport.
My wife had back surgery 3 years ago and these are about the only seats that she can travel comfortably in.
Not for every one but a bargain in the SUV catagory.

Strength:

4.0 engine is a powerful, proven and reliable engine. Great A/C & heat. Brisk acceleration and rugged looks. A time-tested/ proven vehicle.

Weakness:

Reliability of paint. Cramped rear-seating. Can be a bit tough on tires.

I'd recommend a Cherokee to anyone. Just remember- it's a truck and will always be a truck. Don't expect Lexus-like quality or Porsche-type performance. I got 70k trouble free miles in my Comanche. Things get buggy around 90k... but really, show me a car with over 90k and the stock water-pump/alternator and clutch and I'll show you an accident about to happen.

Drove a 1989 Comanche for 10 years. It was an excellent truck. Too bad they quit making. Before I drove a 1984 CJ7. Jeeps are good vehicles... not indestructable and not maintenance free, but good transportation and many smiles.

Strength:

Fun to drive at fisrt.

Weakness:

Unreliable, noisy and small interior, build quality.

Bought brand new in Sep,99. Began to show problem in Nov, rattling from the exaust pipe. The build quality is bad, the lock of the cargo door was not installed properly. In Jan, 2000 the car start to having a abrasive griding noise when I sometimes shut the engine off, this is a real pain in the neck, took it to the dealer few times, and he ( the service manager) refused to fix it since the noise is not there everytime so they don't know how to fix it. And most of all, it broke down once. I had enough with this car !

Strength:

4wd-great in snow, off-road
love the ride - great acceleration when you need it, responsive, sturdy, enough cargo space, sporty
Gas mileage fine for what you'd expect for SUV (18 / 25)?
Overall I love it

Weakness:

Could use another drink holder!
I don't like to drive too fast around corners - there's a warning on the visor saying they tip easily - but hey buy a sports car then!

Although I've only been driving my Sport (2000) since Aug. 1999. I really can't say anything bad about it - And I'm TRYING to be critical here! I just love it. It's fun to drive. The sound system isn't that bad, although I wish I got a CD player. I did a lot of research of SUV's and I believe this is the best car for the money. Other vehicles in the same price range e.g. Honda CRV or Toyota RAV were small and unexciting. At 269/month you can't beat it.

Explorer a little more plush, but the Sport is enough for my purposes - although when my lease is up I might upgrade to Grand Cherokee

Strength:

Classic, rugged, good looks. Off-road capabilities. Cargo room. Reasonable room for four. 4.0 liter power. Standard equipment. Feels like a real truck

Weakness:

Not as refined as some of the newer SUV's. Gas mileage has been OK (17 city - 21 hwy) but not great. Somewhat noisy at highway speed. Mid 80's fit and finish, but somewhat improved in 1997 updating

After spending my entire driving life in sport coupes I bought my sport last year. At this point (11 months) I am very satisfied. Have been back to dealer for unscheduled maintenance just once. Front pass. seat belt retracter would not work (covered by warranty). Have always liked this vehicle, almost purchased one on a couple of occasions. Have taken the vehicle off-road on two occasions and have found the part time 4wd very capable. If full time 4wd is more to your taste there is one available from Jeep. If you are looking for a refined, quite driving experience then you should keep looking. If you are looking for a real 4x4 with real off-road capabilities, decent on road ride and handling, a good amount of standard equipment at a great price (I paid just under $20,000) you should check out this legendary SUV. Even though this was the last great design from AMC it is as much better vehicle than the auto press gives it credit for.

I enjoy my Jeep, and would reccommend it to anyone. IMO, it is not as refined as newer imports, but if your looking at a Jeep your notinto that stuff I feel. This thing goes through absolutely anyhting, someone said that it slides in winter, quick tire change makes all the world of difference. I have Goodyear Wrangler RT235/75/R15's and the thing is super in snow, especially in 4wd mode.
Mileage is somewhat of a dissappointment. I thought at first being as small as this vehicle was it wouldn't use much fuel, but I was wrong. heard that a chip change can solve this.
I also run a K&N filter charger system and it added power plus took my mileage up a little, but not much
Passing is easy with this though, moves pretty decent for a SUV.
I almost hope that in the world of jellybean shapes, they never change the looks of the Cherokee or the wrangler, they are auto icons IMO

Weakness:

Terrible electrical problems (power windows don't work, car won't start), brakes are on the outs, has been in the shop at least 8 times since July of 99, has been to a Chrysler specialist - response was to take the car to arbitration, terrible dealer service

I would never recommend this car to anyone and really don't want it anymore. Consumer Reports is right on in their evaluation of the vehicle. It's not a car that's going to last.

Acceleration, power, cargo capacity, size- not too big, height of driver seat, outward vision, manouverability(sp). durability of drive train.

Weakness:

Gas mileage, high noise level at highway speeds

Bought mine in '96 as a lease end, with 39K on it. Currently has 107K, I fully expect to dirve 200K before I sell it. Mine is 2wd and I have no desire to travel off road. Only problems have a hinge on the driver's door which broke- fixed by dealer for $40.00 (out of warranty) and erratic intermittant wipers. I keep up with general maintence and make certain to change the oil every 3k miles. I would recommend to anyone and I would buy another. I like the size; not too big or too small. Seems to have more interior room than friend's Explorer. I also like how it looks.
