Jeep Cherokee
Strength:
The Cherokee body style is classic. GREAT Reliability, Great Off-road ability for a stock vehicle, The 4.0 liter engine delivers great acceleration, and quite a bit of torque. The AW-4 Tranny, constantly selects the right gear, and has NEVER failed, even under extreme usage. Not flashy (read: not gawdy) just quality workmanship inside and out.
Weakness:
Hmmm. . . this is a hard one. . . The factory stereo kinda sucked. But that has nothing to do with the actual vehicle. . . Well I've driven the hell out of this thing, both on and off road, and it hasn't once failed to get me back home. Has 120,000 miles on it, and running perfectly. My friend's Explorer had 76,000 miles on it when the engine, alternator, water pump, and AC went out (all within a month) the only thing I have replaced was the alternator after getting mud in it. When people doubt the reliability of the 4.0 engine I have to wonder what the heck they did to that vehicle. My uncle has 280,000 miles on his 4.0 and it's never been rebuilt. Off-road performance is great even in stock form. On a recent outing my Cherokee ran circles around a 91 Pathfinder. Yeah it doesn't ride like a luxery car, but who the heck wants it to? If they EVER put independant front suspension under a Cherokee, I would stop saving for a new Jeep, and just start hoarding parts for my 91. This is a Jeep, people. Not a car, not a little "cute-ute", and not a fancy over-hyped wanna-be. So stop complaining about little creaks that you hear, the fact that it's a little too bumpy, and that the engine is loud. Oh and the reason the Gas mileage isn't great is because of it's boxy shape. Live with it. Anyways if you want a vehicle that rides like a luxery car, Get a luxery Car, and stop disgracing Jeep. We true Jeepers don't like to be associated with you anyways. Yes I would whole heartedly recommend this. (My friend with the Explorer just sold it and is getting a Jeep after riding in mine for so long) Similar Products Used: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 1987 Jeep Cherokee, 1991 Nissan Pathfinder, 1993 Ford Explorer, |

Jeep Cherokee Sport
Strength:
Value, you get a lot of bang for your buck with the Cherokee Sport
Weakness:
Bad shift lever design, you would think they could have made something a little nicer..i.e the shift lever in a GMC Jimmy. I did a lot of homework..probably too much before I bought my Cherokee Sport, drove just about every SUV out there around the 20K price range. I was coming from driving a 1992' Toytota 4x4 pickup with lots of mods so I was used to a fairly "firm" ride and lots of road noise, squeeks, rattles, etc. I needed something with a back seat, a 6 cylinder, a cargo area, reliable 4 wheel drive for going on beach in Cape Hatteras, NC as well as some creature comforts like auto tranny, power accessories etc. The Jeep fit the bill nicely. I drove it and fell in love, its definately not for everyone, if you want something more car like, DONT GET A JEEP, b/c it has a far from car-like ride. It just feels solid, thats the best word for it. I have only had it a few days so Im not going to get into reliability issues, im sure I will have some problems..its american..what do you expect? Bottom line, i got a 2000 at the end of the model year out the door for 20K, thats including the 1500 cash back the ends Oct. 2, it was hard to find any 2000 around where i live, maybe in other areas its not. You just can't beat a SUV for 20K with power everything, 4x4, big 6 cylinder motor and Jeeps legendary durability! There was nothing, I mean NOTHING I drove at this price that compares, the CRV and RAV4 etc. are great if you want something like that, basically a car with all wheel drive for the winter, but if you want something to actually go on the beach etc., go with the Jeep, follow the maintenance schedule, go the dealer first sign of a problem and you should be fine! As for trim lines, you can't get the SE in 2001, and why would you want something that stripped anyway, the only reason to get the Classic was to get 16" alloy wheels, color coded bumper end pieces, and the slightly upgraded front seats with removable head rests (basically purely cosmetic). I drove a demo limited, ridiculous price, you may as well by a Grand Cherokee Laredo, the heated leather seats, overhead console and Infinity sound system were nice though. The Sport is what you see the most of driving around and seems to give the most value for your money, if you want luxury, buy a Grand! Thats it, Ill report back after a few months! Similar Products Used: This is my first SUV, I test drove the: Nissan XTERRA, Ford Explorer, GMC Jimmy and the Isuzu Rodeo. For the price, the Jeep is a no-brainer. The XTERRA would have been my first choice, but try to find one that isnt a stripped 2WD for 20K..forget it! |

4.0 High Output
Strength:
Very rugged, I have the 4.0 versions with the 5 speed. Very tough rig, I love mine it has power nothing, no carpet, and killer stereo. In this age of lifted luxury cars "SUV's" it is nice to have something that looks as good as it performs. It's like a CJ with more room.
Weakness:
Well none really, I have to work on it semi often, but for 170,000 miles, this thing frickin rocks! Very cool, great for someone who isn't too hard core into 4 wheeling(I am refering to stock version). But very good at getting to the campground or the trailhead. With a few modifications it can rip up the 4 wheelin trails. I love mine and you will too. Now go buy one and enjoy! Similar Products Used: Jeep Wrangler, and Grand Cherokee |

Strength:
plenty of power, perfect size(not too big or too small), reliability, appearance, versatility
Weakness:
rattles in rear hatch, tricky getting it into full-time four wheel drive, late 80's through early 90's cherokees with dark tinted paints(black, black cherry, navy blue), are prone to the paint wearing away especially on the hood and rear hatch I bought my 92 a few years back with around 80,000 on the odometer and didn't give it a second thought. Since I have owned it the only repair that I have done is the replacement of the main on-board computer, and that only went bad due to a slip-up while jumping someone elses battery for them. Mine now has over 130,000 and runs like new. If you don't abuse these jeeps they just won't break, but when you get some city folk that have never seen a dirt road before, and they try driving their new 4x4 on dry pavement with the transfer case engaged, they wonder why their junky jeep broke. I'm not trying to run people down but I read many of the stories that people submitted to this review and I have never heard of such ridiculous lies of poor quality, reliability, and value. Another thing, when you buy a jeep cherokee you might want to look in the back at the amount of cargo space available, it seems that a lot of people are complaining about the amount of space back there as if it suddenly shrunk on them. Grow up,don't buy it and complain about it like someone pulled something over on you. Similar Products Used: 88 suzuki samurai, 90 jeep wrangler 4.2, 89 jeep cherokee laredo, 96 jeep grand cherokee |

Strength:
Very strong engine, handles more like a car than a sport utility, tons of cargo room, good looks; doesn't look like a half-used bar of soap (Blazer) or a piece of construction equipment (Explorer), built like a tank.
Weakness:
Brakes: At 19,000 miles, the first set of rotors were trashed. We live in a mountainous area, but otherwise no heavy duty use...puzzling, but Chrysler replaced them under warranty...wonder what will happen when that runs out? Cramped driving position (for my freakishly huge body), lack of convenience features compared to other modern sport utility vehicles. Don't like the way the back seat folds...why do we have to raise the seat before lowering the back? Paid just over 20,000 and got AM/FM cassette, tilt, cruise, air, 6 cyl, power mirrors, auto trans, roof rack, etc. Similar Products Used: Rides far better than some 4wd vehicles I've driven, including my Nissan Pickup and my friend's Explorer. Very good value for the money. |

It's a Jeep! The 6 cylinder engine is the only way to go. It's strong and has never let me down. For an SUV I get good gas milage with the manual transmission (23mpg hwy). The 4.OL engine is a proven work horse for at least a decade.
Weakness:
No cup holders in front (previous to 1998)! Corosion in the exaust system. Would I buy another Jeep? You Bet! I have 120,000 miles on it and have had to make some repairs during the last 20,000 miles. Replaced valve cover gasket, new radiator & thermostat, and the big one, a new clutch and exaust system. Other than that there have only been routine expenses (hoses, belts, tires, etc.). I have driven this vehicle hard. I use it for towing a 4000 lb boat and a 1947 Willys, and it has been off road at least a dozen times a year. In my opinion there is no other SUV that offers true 4WD capabilities at such a reasonable price. I like it so much compared to all the other SUV's I have driven that I am considering getting another one and keeping the one I've got now. Strength:
Excellent running gear. 4 liter has plenty of power. Lot's of aftermarket accesories are available for the JC. Been a very reliable vehicle and have never had to replace any major parts other then a front brake rotor. I've always liked the classic look. Excellent offroad! Spent three summers taking part in the Colorado Rockies Jeep jamborees, this rig went everywhere and operated excellent even at 12,000 feet above sea level. Again, it has been a solid purchase and currently the odometer reads at 117,000 miles.
Weakness:
I wish that crysler would really look into the fit and finish problems with all of it's vehicles. The interior has fallen apart. The dash is cracked, the spare tire bracket broke off, so I'm forced to lay the tire on the cargo area floor. Both adjustment springs for the passenger and driver seats have broken in half. The 5-speed shift knob has fallen off. The exterior paint is suffering and I've always taken great pains to wash and wax the JC often. I've replaced 4 windsheilds, must be the design that attracts rocks? Paid around 16k in december 1992. Have been impressed with overall value that I feel I've recieved from the Cherokee. Again, no major repairs and this even comes after installing a 3" Rancho lift, off-road shocks, 31" tires and a K&N filtert at about 10k miles. In true miles, I probally have about 150k because I never corrected the speedometer or odometer to compensate going from 225 to 31" tires. Pretty damn impressive considering that altering a vehicle can wear out parts at a faster pace. I'm trading it in on a 2000 Durango because I continue to produce children (still can't figure out what's causing that?), and the Cherokee is growing far to small for my needs. Need the 7-seat capacity and refuse to let my wife bully me into a mini-van. I'm going to miss my ride, almost 8 years of loyal service. I have this guilty feeling for trading it in, the feeling is similiar to having your 12 year-old lab put to sleep. Shed a tear for me. I just hope I have the same luck overall with the Dodge. Similar Products Used: 1985 GMC S-15 Jimmy. It had the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder motor, underpowered piece of junk. All kinds of mechanical problems. Very underpowered. |

Fuel Economy I bought it used in 1996. In my case, I have had absolutely NO problems at all (replaced a crank sensor for $100, but that's it). It's been a great truck. I know others on this page have had problems, but my experience has been great. I guess that's the luck of the draw- it seems to happen with almost any car- American, Japanese, or European.
