Strength:

Great Power, I don't think I would have noticed until I got on the freeway in the passing lane. It's stilla good looking JEEP for being 10 years old.

Weakness:

I really don't have any.

I would reccomend this jeep because of the value you get from it. The poeple that complain about it are the one that either beat it up or didn't do there homework while looking for one. I waited for about a month to find the right one that had been taken care of. I live in a snowy area that you need the 4 wheel drive sometimes. That is a added benefit. As far as I'm concerned the poeple that buy one they will make a wise CHOICE.

Strength:

Hmmmm....relatively cheap to lease?

Weakness:

The Jeep Cherokee (Shoe Box) design is 16 years old! The quality of the materials used in the interior are horrendous. My infant sister could easily stick a pencil through the dashboard plastic. The Chrysler stereo is definately top of the line, comparing it to other 1970 models. The steering on this car is another indicator of its place in the infamous POS car group. The steering wheel must be tilted slightly to the right for the car to venture straight forward. Also the turning radius is more or less worse than a Greyhound bus. Personally I feel the Jeep has the most worthless backseat of any SUV. My dog is even scared to sit back there! Seriously the backseats are a safety concern, considering the lack of headrests and the fact that they only support your lower back.

Chrysler/Jeep surely exhibited their fine engineering ability on this model. Hopefully the Jeep Liberty will continue their fine tradition.

Strength:

When I gave it up, I had 145,000 miles on it. Too bad I leased it. Too bad I got the 2WD?!?(I still kick myself today). The 4.0L was a good engine for this application, and the automatic transmission had just the right gear ratios, although first could be a little longer.

Weakness:

Even though it had 145,000 miles on it, the body was horrible. It had dents left and right, the passenger's front side door was rusting a the hinges. That got so horrible that I had to close and lock the door for good. The original Michelin XW4s could've had a little more grip on them, and the rear suspension was terribly, terribly outdated.

For: power and clocked mileage

Against: build quality, original tires, suspension(rear)

Strength:

VERY CAPABLE OFF-ROAD. THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW VEHICLES THAT CAN MANAGE EXTREMELY ROCKY/ROUGH TERRAIN IN STOCK FORM

POWERFUL, RELIABLE ENGINE WITH LOTS OF TORQUE

SOLID FRONT/REAR AXLES WITH EXCELLENT SUSPENSION ARTICULATION (RARELY FOUND ON TODAY'S 'PRETEND' 4X4s

STURDY MANUALLY OPERATED LOW RANGE TRANSFER CASE-NO ELECTRONICS TO GO OUT

SIMPLE TO WORK ON

WIDE AVAILABILITY OF PARTS

Weakness:

NEEDS REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND CARE

NEEDS LARGER RADIATOR FOR DESERT USE

BOZOS WHO BUY IT TO USE AS A FAMILY AROUND TOWN CAR

The Jeep Cherokee is one of the most successful SUV designs in history, having sold 100,000-300,000 vehicles each & every year since AMC designed it in 1984. The reason for its popularity is its size (ideal for narrow trails and steep rock, yet long enough to carry cargo), off-road capability and sturdy reliable engine. It comes standard with good skidplates, has excellent approach/departure angles, and is built for rough trails. For those seeking a bit more off-road performance, the Cherokee is easily lifted 3-4" and can be fitted with taller tires, suspension modifications, body armor, lockers and other enhancements.

People who buy the Cherokee expecting a Honda minivan experience give me a pain. This vehicle is not designed for average urban commuting, though it will perform that job. It is designed for real off-road usage. As long as you maintain it properly it will do that job very, very well. When the last Explorer or Blazer's plastic transfer case button has broken off or the electronic low range gone out of whack, or your Japanese independently sprung plushmobile gets stuck with one or more wheels in the air (common to these vehicles), the Cherokee keeps on going. But you must maintain it. That means regular oil changes, replacing worn parts, changing coolant, belts & hoses on a regular basis. Parts are inexpensive, and the Cherokee is better bought as a used vehicle. Once a Japanese model gets old, good luck getting inexpensive parts or rebuilding the engine or finding off-road enhancements for it.

I've driven over 210,000 miles in my Cherokee, the majority of them off-road, and plan to drive many more, rebuilding the good 4.0L Six when it finally gives out. If you don't like it, fine - more cheap used ones for me to rebuild and enjoy!

Strength:

Lots of options for the money. Quick acceleration, smooth ride, no blind spots, easy to handle and fun to drive. I get 20-22 mpg in town.

Weakness:

Wind noise at highway speed. Front rotors bad at 1200 mi., vehicle came with three defective wheels, bearing noise in blower, factory speakers horrible especially the rear. Need to upgrade to Infinity Premium speakers. Leg space limited behind driver. No rear head rests or cup holders in rear.

I've had all my issues addressed and fixed except for wind noise. I am replacing the front and rear speakers to Premium Infinity. The dealership is super and has been one of the best I've ever dealt with. No hassles-just bring it in and they fix it. I will keep this new Jeep and give it to my son in 4 years. I will replace it with another Jeep-probably the new Liberty. That's one darn cute Jeep. I would highly recommend anyone with this 2001 Sport to upgrade the wheels to the aluminum polished five spoke wheels. This has made my Jeep the best riding Jeep and has made all the difference in the world for sprucing it up. The techs love my Jeep because the ride in this Jeep with new wheels truly makes it ride 100% better. I highly recommend this Jeep-it's a classic and USA made. Anyone can enjoy this affordable, fun Jeep.

Strength:

Powerfull engine, great handling(for a 4x4), cargo room, its a no b.s./straight up SUV.

Weakness:

Gas milage, about 14 in town, 18 on highway, it should get better with more miles. Brakes are not up to par, they take a while to get used to. Getting in and out of the back seat is quite a chore, even for someone that is short. The back seats need headrests, who in the hell at Chrysler thought that NOT having rear headrests was a good idea!

Ive had my Cherokee for about 4 months now, I posted a review further down. After 4,500 miles and 4 months, I LOVE this thing. Its a blast to drive, has plenty of power, plenty of cargo room, and handles great. My only complaint is a loud rattle in the rear at stop lights, no biggie, Im getting it taken care of next week at the dealer, hopefully they will live up to their 5 star rating!

You just can't beat the Cherokee for the pice, I got mine delivered (everything including tax etc.) for 20,000. Don't buy one of these if you want a nice car like ride. The Jeep rides harsh, is fairly loud, has a lot of wind noise on the highway and is just a Jeep all the way around. I personally like that, but if you don't, buy something nicer.

Strength:

Timeless looks.
Relatively sporty looking with sport package rims.
Plently of power.
Good handling for an SUV.
Very quick with 5 speed manual.

Weakness:

COMPLETELY unreliable
Interior materials quality sub par.
Rattles, squeaks and shimmies since 4,000 miles.
Have had countless problems with maintenence, incl. fuel sender (2x broken), engine malfunctions due to random problems, tires wearing down within 5,000 miles, brakes needing replacement 4x and counting, etc.

Dealer service awful. No respect for customer whatsoever. Took 3 days to do an oil change once. (And they're a 5-Star dealer too. PATHETIC.) The car is unreliable: once, it just stopped for no reason on the LA 405 freeway during rush hour, stranding my mother for five minutes before it decided to restart. (This was not likely due to overheating, as the engine was not steaming, the temp gauge didn't go past its normal temperature, and it was roughly 50-55 degrees outside.) Similar instances in the past, but never before during rush hour. (Sometimes, it just won't start at all.) I will never again buy a Chrysler, and probably never an American car. Make sure, when you read these reviews, that you note the previous car of the reviewer. Many of them had older model Cherokees, then bought newer ones and are completely impressed with them. While I'm not saying that their reviews don't matter, I do think that their frame of reference is not geared toward the regular car buyer. In short, better to pick something like 4Runner unless you plan to do SERIOUS off-roading.

My second SUV. Previously had Ford Explorer. Also, have driven more recent models of Explorers, Expeditions, Navigators, and 4Runners. Not as refined as any of them, but works amazingly well off road. I'd opt for the 4Runner: nearly as good off road, much better for everyday (though a little more expensive, worth it to avoid the hassles of owning a Jeep.) Can take you anywhere, but might not get you back.

Strength:

1. Looks and styling
2. Interior
3. V-8 Engine

Weakness:

1. Have had rotors replaced twice(under warranty)
2. Transmission "clunks" & shifts "hard" from 1st to 2nd. Dealer replaced
drive shaft under warranty. That seemed to help at first but the
seems to be reappearing.
3. Just received a recall letter about the "On-Board Diagnostic
System" reset codes.
4. Seems like a LOT of money for a vehicle that has so many
problems. Have had 2 years & only have 18,000 miles on it.
5. First took the vehicle back to the dealer because of the transmission
about 5 weeks after taking delivery.

I would NOT recommend this vehicle because of the many problems with the brakes & transmission (or the drive-train).
I have no complaints about the dealer (Chip Wynn) because they have gone the extra mile to provide my wife with a loaner car & they have done all that Chrysler is allowing them to do. I think Chrysler needs to either fix the vehicle properly or extend a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser for this vehicle.

Strength:

1) Great "stock" off-road performance. Have never gotten it stuck, and I've tried!
2) Ample power in low gears.
3) Good looks.
4) Lack of maintenance problems (maybe I'm just lucky)

Weakness:

1) Not enough clearance in the rear wheel wells. I just installed another leaf which rose the vehicle a considerable 2". Not too much difference in overall stiffness of suspension.
2) Terrible rear seat design. But, I realized that when I bought it. I usually keep the rear seat folded anyways to carry my labrador retriever.
3) I don't know what it is, but I've replaced 4 windshields in this truck alone in the past 3 years. That's a lot of moola.

I love this truck for the low sticker price and the lack of maintenance problems I've had with it. It just turned 68,000 miles and I am taking it in for its first tune-up, after I discovered a new peculiar vibration in the engine. Sounds like one of the pullies is out of alignment. I am currently increasing the ride height, slowly but surely. I recommend that all install a read leaf (such as the Pro-comp add-a-leaf). It raises the rear about 2" to give it a much more aggressive look.

Strength:

It's a JEEP.
One of very few "SUV" that can actually perform and handle just about any off-road adventure.

Excellent acceleration
no blind spots
very reliable
A no-nonsense true 4X4 that is designed for off-road and looks great at the same time.

Weakness:

There is nothing i dont like.

If you are looking for a "suv" that fits in with todays "standards" and need a BMW,Acura,Mercedes,Caddilac etc - even Ford and Chevy then Off-Road is obviously not any concern of yours. Go with the best cup holder, and most luxurious seats. If you are looking for a great on-road vehicle, that can take you to places off-road with ease such as Moab, or Rubicon go with a Jeep, or Land Rover if you really need the Luxury. In between - check out Toyota.
