Weakness:
Could use a modernized center console with more storage and larger cup holders. Gas milage (15-22mpg). Not very many aftermarket parts. This is my second Trooper. My last one, a red 1995 S named April got into a 4 car pile-up and was totaled. Physically, I was unhurt but emotionally I was devastated; April was so good to me. In the 7 years and 150,000 miles I owned her she never gave me a single problem. The only repair was a new wiper motor when I tried to clear 3 inches of wet snow from the windshield. She ran wonderfully too. In fact, I think she ran better at 150,000 miles than she did new! I went through 2 sets of tires, 2 sets of brake pads, 2 sets of spark plugs, and one headlight bulb. I did some minor tweaking over the years: a K&N air filter, a Tornado air spinning thing, and Bilstien shocks. The filter and Tornado improved acceleration and throttle response and the shocks drastically improved handling and off-road capabilities. Speaking of off-road, April loved getting off the pavement and into the woods. The suspension soaked up bumps and ruts wonderfully and the 4wd hooked up really well. The exceptional visibility also proved valuable when the going got really nasty. I’ve taken her off-roading in PA, NC, CO, UT, WY, MT, MA, VT, NH, and ME. I recently went to Hawaii and rented a Grand Cherokee and did some light off-roading on Kaua’i and it was no comparison. That Jeep would have been eating my Trooper’s dust! Traction was poor even in 4wd, it didn’t take bumps well at all (I had to crawl over everything to keep it from bouncing off the trail or bottoming the suspension), and the visibility was very poor by comparison. The space inside the Trooper is amazing. It has more space than a Dodge Durango but is over a foot shorter! The rear seats are far off the floor so you aren’t sitting with your knees in your chest. They also have adjustable headrests, an arm rest with cup holders, and reclining seat backs. Anyway, when it came time to buy a new vehicle, I looked at and drove everything out there under $30,000 but my heart belonged to the Trooper. Then I found a dealer that had 4 Troopers that were demo vehicles. They were 2002s with only 10,000 miles on them. So instead of paying $31,000 for a new Trooper I got one practically new for only $18,500! And with the $6000 I got from my insurance company for my old Trooper my payments are only like $250/mo.! This new Trooper is sharp looking. She is white with a grey/champagne lower and a green mirror tint to the windows. This new Trooper is much nicer than my old one. This one has all the niceties, pw, remote entry, power / heated mirrors, adjustable front armrests, an awesome Nakimichi stereo with dual antennas imbedded the way-back glass, alloy wheels, and various other little things. It also has more power at 215 vs. 175. I just bought a wood dash kit for $200 that really classes up the interior. I also plan on doing the same upgrades that I did to my old Trooper. So in short, my old Trooper was trouble free, a blast to drive on and off road, had tons of space, awesome visibility, super comfortable, with an awesome driving position. This new Trooper adds more power and features. I am looking forward to many blissful years with my new Trooper. Very Powerful for its weight, HUGE, Big Ole' sunroof, Love the boxy style, LONG Warranty. Isuzu has very reliable SUVs and you can count on them to fix anything that goes wrong. Gets good gas mileage too, VERY AFFORDABLE
Weakness:
It's a little too big for me, but if youre looking at full sized SUVs, the remaining Troopers are BIG and Cheap My family has always driven Isuzus since I was little. We started off buying from isuzu with a 93 (i think) Isuzu Trooper, and we also had an 89 Pathfinder which was complete junk! the Isuzu was running perfectly but in 2000 my parents just got tired of driving the same truck every single day for 102,000 miles even though it was so reliable. They completely ditched the Pathfinder because of its crapiness. In 99 I they bought me a Honda Passport, Which is 100% ISUZU baby. My parents got a really good deal on a used Ford Exploder after the Trooper and had that thing for a year. The Exploder was more expensive because of the constant repairs than buying a new car instead of a used one. They went straight back to Isuzu, and just bought this last Trooper. We've filed so many reports against Ford w/ the BBB, and we're trying to find a lawyer who knows the lemon law. This new Trooper is awesome. Now has 14,000 miles on it and is REALLY solid and BIG. The Passport is an Isuzu Rodeo and I'm so in love with Isuzu. Its all I'll ever buy as long as they're still selling SUVs. GO ISUZU! Did I mention their 10 year Warranty? Strength:
Roomy mid size SUV, top quality build. Powerfull 3.5 liter engine, nice plushy interior. Nice sunroof. A well though out engineered vehicle. Next to other SUV's it looks like a rich person's SUV.
Weakness:
It could do with a bit more gound clearance, and it could be fitted with wider factory approved tyres. The engine computer module could be looked at so that the vehicle can lurge a lot smoother when accelerating really hard. There is a small delay in the engine management system, but this in a way it's design so that the gearbox is saved from a hammering when taking off at great speeds and it's also desing for better fuel economy. The system is well though out so that it forces the driver to be gentle and to look after the SUV. A very wise idea from Isuzu, very well thought out package, but at times frustrating. In Australia the Trooper is called the "Holden Jackaroo". IT's the best quality SUV I have ever come across. No other SUV in the market except for the BMW X5 comes anywhere near it's excellent build quality. That says it all!!! It's very good cruising the highways and it has good fuel economy compared to bigger GM, Ford and Toyota tanks. The Trooper/Jackaroo is a well kept secret in the SUV market, and only those people that know about quality would buy it. Similar Products Used: 97 Toyota Landcruiser. Very Good Toyota tank, but the Isuzu is built to a better quality. 98 Jeep Grand Jerookee, good work horse. |

Isuzu Trooper
Strength:
It is roomy...this is the ONLY strength.
Weakness:
EVERYTHING. This is the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. If you want to save a whole lot of money and emotional distress, I urge you to NEVER buy one! We purchased this vehicle at a low 21,000 miles and have had nothing but TROUBLE since. It now has 44,000 miles (which I still consider low). The compresser, front and rear brakes and calipers, driver side window, A/C and heater blower have all gone out. Not to mention when we took it in for the most recent oil change, the dipstick was DRY! We used to own Hondas, and will never buy anything but them again. I can only hope Isuzu goes out of business. Never have I felt this strongly about a vehicle before! Similar Products Used: Isuzu Rodeo...didn't really have it long enough to know how bad Isuzus are. |

LS 2WD
Strength:
Strong motor, moves its heft very well. Boxy but still classy looks, love the factory "mesh" style wheels on the LS. Very comfortable w/dual power seats and decent 6 disc changer. Has a "quality" feel to it and you think you are driving that costs twice as much. Overall the best deal on a new car I ever had.
Weakness:
Gas mileage and needs frequent wheel alignments. Stock tires are too skinny as well. Originally intended to buy an Expedition but while shopping on the internet I found an Isuzu Dealership and the Trooper was $8k below sticker! Never considered one before but had to at least give it a look. After looking at many SUV's and willing to fork out $35k or so to get one I found the perfect one for only $23k. The Trooper has all the luxury car amenities and room and feels much better as far as quality goes than any other truck I've seen up to $35k. 30k miles on mine so far and no prob whatsoever, family enjoys the heated seats and gigantic sunroof as well. Kinda like having your cake and eating it too for that price. Similar Products Used: 96 Explorer, most horrid pile of junk I ever owned. Last Ford product ever. 93 Pathfinder, not very roomy but it was reliable even though it had very thin sheetmetal. |
