Isuzu Amigo
Strength:
Fun to drive. 4-wheel drive is great to have.
Weakness:
Convertible roof is hard to remove and the zippers go bad. My Isuzu just hit over 100,000 miles a few weeks ago. When I brought it it had about 77,000 miles on it. It's been a great vehicle and very fun to drive. I learned to drive clutch on it and the 4 wheel drive is great. I have used it as a work vehicle so it has been put through some fairly heavy driving on undeveloped roads. A couple weeks ago I noticed the clutch started slipping sometimes when going up hill. Other then this "new" problem the only other problem i have had was that the exhaust had a leak in it around the flex joint which i was unaware of until i took it for its first inspection. My concern is that the clutch doesn't seem to be slipping anymore and I have scheduled it to be replaced along with the ABS and Timing belt recall items. I was wondering if this is a common problem with Amigos? Since it is a hydraulic clutch could it be due to the cold weather changes? Should i wait to see if it happens again before I go through the expense of replacing the clutch? I was also told i take the chance of cracking the exhaust when it is taken out of the way to get to the clutch! Has anybody else with an Amigo experienced this phantom clutch slippage?!? Is it going to happen again? |

Mechanical integrity and resale. The garage I use told me they LOVE Isuzu because they make a lot of money repairing Isuzu vehicles. I rolled alot of negative equity into this vehicle, so I financed $22,000 when I bought it new in 2000. LOVED IT until this year. At 70,000 miles the timing belt broke (I didn't get the recall notice) and trashed the engine. Isuzu replaced the engine, and the ABS (also recalled) but did not reimburse the towing fees. That was in January of this year. Now it's December and my out of pocket repairs just hit $1500 for the year. I've had to replace the slave cylinder, repair transmission leak and replace the starter. I suspect my clutch will not last much longer and I understand that will be $9000. I still have a year left to pay-off, but dealers will only offer $1500 on trade-in. Depreciation is horrible. Now I have 82,000.....and it's almost completely rebuilt! If it had better resale value, I would not mind the maintenance expenses. I did not have any problems at all with vehicle under 70,000 miles. Power/Standard/4 cyl I just picked this vehicle up at a dealer in austin. One owner lady and only has 55,000 miles. I have never driven a vehicle that gets more than 20 mpg, of course you sacrifice power with the 4 cyl. My son loves it especially when I take the top and the sunroof completely off. Very clean little vehicle depending on how much I like it I would like to pick up a v6 4x4. Similar Products Used: Ford Expedition/Toyota 4-runner/Jeep Cherokee |

V6 lots of power. Dual sunroofs. Looks killer, tow pkg, grill guard, big tires.
Weakness:
I don't think the ABS works. I slid past a stop sign. 2WD sucks. 1st day I got it I was stuck in the snow. Thought it was 4WD like the dealer told me. Surprise! I'm afraid I see smoke from the muffler. How often should I be checking the dip stick? Just bought a Green Amigo for what I thought was a great price. Happened to be at the dealer, the car looked incredibly clean inside and out. Just trying to decide whether or not to buy the Warranty??? Also, does anyone have problems with the CD player skipping like mad? Similar Products Used: 4Runner. RX300. |

some interior noise in winter time, hopefully I won't have any more problems with something to do with the fuel sytem I Think is great car, it looks awesome and I keep it like new in the outside and inside meaning schedule maintanance on time every single time and I only let the dealership touch it.I've had it for three and half years and because the way I take care of it ,it was frustrating when it gave me problems with the engine not getting fuel somehow:when you try to start it ,it turns but it won't start;they change the fuel pump, then the fuel line, then the conectors in between fuel tank and pump and then fuel pump and something else;I pray to GOD this time they got it right.Anyways if you have had similars problems I'd love to hear from you.my e-mail again is:leon01432@aol.com thak you very much. steady on the hwy, even at 70 mph, Roomy for 4 adults or put the back seat down and use as a truck hauler
Weakness:
Power sufficient but not perfect, Rear slides when cornering in the Winter, ABS is a little touchy. I bought this vehicle with the idea that I would have a truck with lots of elbow room. The SUV provides decent power (4 cylinder) and good handling. It looks like a SUV and drives like a truck The rear hatch door makes ease of moving items in and out. The 5 speed shift doesn't match-up with engine power RPM to acceleration is off. My previous vehicle was an Isuzu truck that ran problem free for 8.5 years and had 130k miles I hope the same with this one. I picked this SUV up after 4 months of searching. Lots of vehicle for the money. Similar Products Used: GMC 2 door jimmy, ford escape |

Amigo 4x4 Hardtop
Strength:
Great style with roomy backseat, once you get back there. Ample cargo when the backseat folds up. Love the dual sunroofs. Lots of V6 power in a relatively small SUV.
Weakness:
Gas hog - noisy in 4-wheel drive - cloth, patterned interior a little disappointing - many blind spots I wanted a slightly used 2-door SUV and didn't want an Explorer or Blazer, so what's left? A '99 Amigo, with low miles (26,000 at time of purchase) 4x4, hardtop, V6, auto, and burnt orange paint. Everything else it came with was just a bonus. Has been great despite being hit by a deer on the passenger door/front fender area a week after I got it. Body shop fixed with all new parts courtesy my insurance and looks better than new. No problems except for intake manifold gasket deteriorated. Isuzu dealership in the area fixed that under powertrain warranty. Check engine light then came on, and they fixed the rubber hose leaking fuel vapor to the purge cylinoid. Running great in 20 degree and under temperatures. Guzzling the gas at 13.5 to 14 miles to the gallon, but I am letting it warm up in the mornings. Hoping for better during warm months. 4x4 shift on the fly works great, but sounds like a jet is chasing you down. Other than the bad start we had together, I'm happy with my Amigo, and I'm trying to relax and not listen for every little noise it makes. Mom says to turn up the radio. Sunroof screws tend to get loose after a while Soft top presents a problem- got broken into twice Engine noise when hitting the 3-3.5 RPM miles, dealership was never able to find anything wrong with it but it didn't cause any problems Bad gas mileage Burns a lot of oil I love this SUV. It's a fun and reliable car. In 3 years has never given me problems. It somewhat lacks power and the soft top is not safe if you live in the city. The gas mileage is not good. Hard Top V6 Engine...lots of power Leather interior 2 sunroofs which is cool The 4wd works very well....has gotten me out of a lot of muddy places The overall look and performance of the vehicle
Weakness:
This ABS problem I'm having I really like the Amigo, it's the first SUV I've owned. It rides a little rough, but haven't had any major problems yet. Although I am having a little trouble with my ABS system. The motor for the ABS won't shut off when I shut off the engine and I had to pull the fuse to keep the battery from going dead. I'm now trying to find someone who will fix it. There's no Isuzu dealer in my area, so it's a challenge. Everyone is mentioning how hard it is to find a hardtop for the Amigo and how they don't come stock. Mine came with just a hard top. I don't believe I'd ever buy a soft top, they don't look as good, and I'm hearding about a lot of leaking. Similar Products Used: Honda Accord (1996) |

Ride, 4cyl I find typical maintenance and problems with my 98 Isuzu Amigo soft top 4cyl 4X4. I've had to replace the starter in the dead of winter but otherwise no problems. Many of Isuzu's are manufactured by GM. The engines are made by Isuzu but that's about it. I've had a trooper that racked up 170,000 miles before I sold it, what a great box! Anyone who expect a nice ride out of a small SUV is a moron. I'm planning on replacing it next year or two with a V-6 Rodeo sport. Similar Products Used: Isuzu trooper, Ford escape, Geo tracker |
