People who can't afford them prefer Jeeps

All around a pretty good truck, starts every time and gets me there and back. Best feature as with any unique vehicle is that it is just that, unique with only 12,000 sold to public. I like the collectablity and fact that it is easy to work on it. I have had to do about as much repoair as any American made vehicle that is 10 years old and 63k miles on it. Fortunatly it has a GM 350 gas motor so parts are easy to get at Napa and there is nothing overly complicated on it. It is true that nothing else really compares to it on or off the road, sort of a King in a land of crappy small Jeeps and wannabees trying to make production trucks into something that they were never designed to be. I get5 the sense that the original poster with the Jeep Rubicon has to decide between paying rent or getting the latest bolt on part from JC Whittney... Maybe some stylish neon accents... In the world of sportscars their are many contendors, but with offroad, Hummer H1 stands alone...

Strength:

Looks, comes with winch, biodiesel, good for paths, roomy interior, undercarriage clearance, lots of torque for towing/rescue.

Weakness:

Heavy, fuel-hungry, too much wheelbase and track for challenging trails, sorry articulation, top speed, stability at freeway speed, durability, price.

I went to the Lynch Hummer "Stupid Hummer Tricks" webpages and it just reinforced my beliefs. Those pictures might look hairy. Well, they are. That's my point. You'll see the H1 on 2 wheels a LOT. Uh, that's NOT a good thing. That's called lack of wheel travel therefore a lack of traction and stability. It's a good thing H1s come with a winch because driving like this is going to require constant use of it. This brings me to my point. My Jeep Rubicon could do all this and more... (bone stock) much faster and much safer. Once you get a little off-roading experience you will realize that the terrain you see these Hummers on, for the most part, isn't even challenging. You wouldn't even need all that the top-of-the-line Rubicon has to offer. In fact, a Jeep Wrangler Sport with a $600 3" lift kit would embarrass these $100,000+ elephants. I've seen Toyota trucks from the 80's do WAY more. But at least the H1s are diesel machines which would allow use of biodiesel. And I know all H1 owners are using nothing but biodiesel, right? There's the saving grace. But hey, H1's are attention-getters that use biodiesel. If there are any H1 owners on Oahu, Hawaii that would like to do a side-by-side comparison off-road vs. my Jeep, please email me. I suspect my Jeep could do more without even locking the differentials. Oh yeah, Jeeps can easily cruise on the freeway at 85mph with stability and lots of engine rpm to spare...

Great truck to own if one can afford one Styling of the truck is unmistakable Attracts envious and jealouse looks Nice low-end power 4x4 abilities are parallel to none others

Weakness:

Definitely not for highway driving

WOW! I picked up my HUMMER at Denver and had to drive 1,200 miles to get home. The engine "hums" and it makes a lot of noise, but every mile was worth it even though my whole body still aches one week later. Everywhere I go people turn heads and a couple of time we almost caused accidents. My HUMMER has a set of after market K-O tires on it. Although I do have a set of super swarmpers too but I have never experienced them. It has a new 6.5 Engine rahter than the original 6.2; new tranny and new exhaust; basically a new set of powertrain system. It rides nicely at lower speed and it handles surprisingly well. All and all, I like this truck a lot and will write another update once I have put some miles on it and maintenance starts to kick in. (to report the maintenance costs) Stay tuned...

Massive Safety Mobility Looks Presence

Weakness:

Hard to park. I just park where there are not a lot of other cars around.

It took my son about a year to convince me that the H1 was the real deal. I like so may other though that the H1 was a big over rated truck. He would show me everything he could find on the H1. He showed me some of the things that the H1 was capable of doing and I was floored. If you want to see go to Jim Lynch Hummers website and look up stupid Hummer tricks. So one afternoon we went to Lynch Hummer in O'fallon, MO and test drove a 1999 4 door hard top. It was love at first sight. As the salesman pulled the H1 to the door for us to get in you could feel the power of the engine. The thing that shocked me the most was that it did not ride like the tank that so many people reported in their review. It does take a little while to get used to the truck being so wide, but worth the time it takes. I drove to Texas to pick up my black Wagon. The drive back was more than enough time to get accustomed to the truck. It got 13 miles to the gallon driving back at an average speed of 70 mile an hour. I know that the milage is less in town but not an issue with me. If you want to dance you have to pay the fiddler. It is hard to discribe the feeling of driving the H1 as you look out over the huge hood with the 2 hooks coming out of the middle. You feel safe to say the least. Very impressed with the stereo that they install at the factory. It will rock all you want. The CTIS is really neat also, we deflated our tires while driving over some rough highways in Oklahoma. Just push a couple of buttons and out goes the air and what a difference in the ride. I drive a Porsche 911 also and the ride in the H1 is no worse than the 911. Overall I am very happy with the H1. It can be a little tricky to park in tight spots, but once again if you want to dance you have to pay the fiddler. If you want a toy and turns head and is lots of fun to play with the H1 is what you need. I got an extended warranty with Exotic Warranties. They are about the only ones that offer and extended warranty for the H1. Insurance is a little high but not too bad. The guy I bught mine from took out the interior lights and replace them with red bulbs. It is really neat at night when you open the doors and see teh red in the cab. He left the overhead toggle light stock in case you need to read something.

I really have had no problems less a blown stearing pump. I regularly blow past full size P/U's going up hill. Maybe I got a stong motor but It'll burn them off pulling around a corner, ya ya big deal till you think about wieght & tire size. I regularlly drive mine and beat the s@#t out of it. Off road capability On road (not in busy areas, although it turns amazingly sharp) safety great if you want to go incognito :) or ifd your planning an urban assault in the near future.

Weakness:

size if your in a heavily populated area...i have no problems cost of maintenence (trust me though, little problems turn into big problems so this is not an issue to me) depending on where you live, mechanic/dealer availability

This is a wonderful truck. Its designed to be easy to fix, and that sometimes means its easy to break, but with proper maintenence its not overly bad. Driving it a year later is just as fun as the first day, and people still stare, and talk, and want rides. It has amazing capabilities, with a good set of mud tires, the only trucks that can beat it have just as much money in upgrades so it works out. It isnt an escalade (thats not a mistake). It rides like a truck, but no worse, the gas milage isnt great, but its pulling 3 tons, and last time i checked, towing something fully loaded doesnt change much. Comfort isnt a key issue, however, its not in any way UNcomfortable. I drive mine as a daily driver, and yes there are more practical cars, but this adds points in the safety, fun, and overpowering ability. Overall, if you have what it takes to buy one, you wont regret it a bit, I have only had one major problem with mine, and it was partially my fault... Its a good truck and a blast to own.

FANTASTIC OFF ROAD. GOOD FOR ON ROAD AS WELL. FUN TO DRIVE.

Weakness:

SLOW, BUT HOLDS ITS OWN. SOMEWHAT NOISY INTERIOR, BUT IN NO WAY LOUD OR OBNOXIOUS. ONLY ONE SMALL AC VENT FOR R/F PASSENGER. FUEL CONSUMPTION AROUND 11-13MPG.

YES ITS EXPENSIVE TO BUY. DONT BUY ONE UNLESS YOU HAVE THE DOUGH. THATS WHAT SEPERATES THE BOYS FROM THE MEN. ITS AN AWESOME TRUCK. LOOKS GREAT AND DRIVES EQUALLY WELL. WILL GO ANYWHERE AND IT GETS ATTENTION ANYWHERE YOU GO. MILEAGE SUCKS SO DONT USE IT AS AN EVERYDAY DRIVER. YOU MUST REMEMBER THAT IT IS A CIVILIAN KNOCK OFF OF THE MILITARY HMMWV, AND THEREFORE HAS MANY OF THE MIL SPEC FEATURES. IF YOU WANT A BENZ, THEN BUY ONE, AND DONT WHINE ABOUT IT. OTHERWISE, GO FOR IT AND I DONT THINK YOU WILL REGRET IT.

-Best offroading vehicle period -Great fun to drive -Head turing appearance

Weakness:

-To big to take anywhere -Crappy gas millage -Not a car for the road

The hummer is an off roader. Mine has been up and down mountains, through rivers, snow, mud, and almoast anything you could think of. I've even been completely underwater(About 8 feet thanks to a snorkel kit). But it is not a road car dont buy one ulness you like to off road. Buy another car for the road (I never drive my hummer on the road it is slow, slugish, and HUDGE. NEVER GO TO THE CITY WITH A HUMMER)

Will drive in four feet of snow, mud and water etc. Great factory winch option. Impressive ground clearance and appearance. These strenghts have convinced me to buy three of them !

Weakness:

Uhh, expensive to buy, maintain and poor trade in value. Weak dealer/manufacturer support and communication. Not mass produced, so plenty of fit and finish issues, cheap interior, still loud inside and a underpowered motor. Excessive tire wear with no serious offroad use, and very very poor paint jobs, Spooky warranty coverage with a long list of exclusions. Worth about the price of a H2. Maybe the above is why dealers have more second hand H1's on the lots then new ones. I predict the H1's will be available for a few more years and then they will be no longer be produced. Only competiton would help this product. Like the Toyota Megacruiser, but we will never see it stateside becuse of tariffs etc..

Hmmm, where to begin... I have owned three of these vehicles over the years each with it's own story to tell. I could write a book about this but I will keep it short and to the point. The first one I owned was a second hand 96 Wagon with a turbo. It had 4 thousand miles on it. The problems : Immediately Replaced all four MT tires that showed heavy wear and belt seperation; very unsafe,Electrical problem that would short out all gauges on the instument panel, no cure ever found, continious alignment problems with little more then fire road offroad use, vibrations from motor and driving would unlosen every screw in the interior and finally the paint job was bubbling up in numerous areas. I kept it for almost 2 years before trading it on a New 99 Green Wagon. The problems : Tire issues galore, GSA's would never stay balanced which consistently threw the alignment out. Tried 2 piece wheels with the same negative results. The tires were shot by 12k miles and dealer said they were defective. Goodyear, nicely told me where to go, and the dealer said there was nothing they could do. With no help from AM General I sold it back for a nice loss. The third and final one was a 2002 Black wagon with the Optional 17" wheel package. Beautiful truck. The interior dash was redesigned but the gauges still looked like they were stolen off of a lawn tractor. I noticed a difference in performance with the bigger wheels and paid the price with gas mileage. 6 months into owning it I noticed the roof paint was cracking and flaking. The dealership said this was normal and by the way not covered under warranty. I have traded it in on a H2 and currently still holding my breath. Oh I forgot, everyone I owned had problems closing and securing the hood and I replaced the front seats on all three because of defects. Lastly these things are unbelievably expensive to maintain, ($800.00 not unusual for basic service) the resell value makes a land rover's value look appealing but damn were they fun to drive in deep snow !
