Cheap. OHV engine/manual is pretty frugal on gas. Well equipped even in basic trim.
Weakness:
Too much crappy plastic. Starting to have trouble with manual tranny and suspension at 42K miles. Engine always noisy on startup; dealer says normal :(. Fair enough but starting to have issues once I crossed the 36K mile mark. I have the 2WD 5spd manual and am starting to have trouble with the manual transmission. It also shakes at highway speeds. Strength:
-reliability -sense of safety -comfort -great trunk space -roomy all around; great for long road trips
Weakness:
-huge gas guzzlers -some engine noise, but thats to be expected with a big car -dont buy a white explorer, they get dirty like you wouldnt believe -not such a smooth ride over bumps my parents bought the explorer in 1997. then it was 3 years old with very limited miles. They passed it down to me in 1999 and since then i have put well over 100,000 miles on my baby. Right now the car has 183,000 miles and i have had no major mechanical or transmission problems at all. the only minor thing until a few weeks ago was a check engine light that kept flashing on and off. 2 weeks ago, it died in my driveway and needed a jump. the mechanic couldnt find anything wrong with it and i took it home. i would recommend a ford explorer to anyone who needs reliability. my experience with this car has been virtually flawless and at 183,000 miles, thats saying something. i still commute over 1,200 miles a month to and from work and the car wont quit. i suggest getting regular oil changes and tune ups every winter besides some good old fashioned love. the only drawback from where i stand is the fact that SUVs eat gas. i spend more money on gas for one year than i have in 9 years of maintenance or repair on this car. i am buying a new car this week and i am sad to see my old explorer go. Elegant and strong looking Confortable on road Very spacious Good millage concidering the engine
Weakness:
Poor ground clearance and you will not find a suspension kit to improve this weakness. Very noisy inside. Off road..., get ready to breath dust. You will probably need some extra cash for maintenance In general it is a very good looking SUV. You will end doing much more off road that you think you could. It have a very confortable ride on the road, but off road it is a little noisy. I am really not sure if I will buy a second one. Similar Products Used: Nissan Pathfinder (I'm still crying) |

Strength:
You have a good view of the road while driving You can do more than you think you can with one. I've never NOT had the room for things....BIG things.
Weakness:
What WAS replaced: -4wd Shift motor -Radius bushings for front suspension/axle -A/C clutch and pulley/condenser unit -Back left speaker --Total $1500 What NEEDS to be replaced: -Speedometer - gives a guestimate ($400?) -Back right speaker (blown) -Both front speakers (cracked) There just old. (replace all with good ones) -Suspension - Ford suspension is god compared to these. (at least $350) -Auto locking hubs (for 4wd) - They Don't lock. (about $300) -Some spindle unit having to do with the front wheels.($?) = At least another $1000 (not including spindles and speakers. Let me just pull the money out of my @$$. I really wish I could say the same about my Explorer as Nicholas says about his. I've wanted an Explorer since 1993 after Jurassic Park hit theaters. I finaly bought one, or should I say was screwed into one at Suburban Ford. At first I liked it. Now I'm not too sure. Right at 100k miles the "weaknesses" happened. I thought about purchasing a new one later on, but now? I don't think so. Similar Products Used: Ford Ranger - I'm sorry I got rid of it. Great little truck. Geo Tracker |

Power(210hp V6) Cargo room 5speed transmission looks great
Weakness:
interior finish and quality headlight output runs through to many brake lights I am almost 19 and always wanted to buy an Explorer. I bought my vehcle with 45,000 miles on it. Mechanically it is very good, only basic matenance. The ride on basically any surface is poor. The truck looks great. Dont get dual's I have taken it back to the muffler shop 6 times for adjustment. I also have a problem with interior quality. I can see the mechanics of the seat when sitting in the truck. Nothing is covering the metal things that work the seat, very tacky in a vehicle that cost 25k when new. Also very noisy interior panels as well as cargo area leaks in water. Good strong motor Execellent towing vehicle Comfort is excellent, very roomy
Weakness:
Happy with everything I have always wanted one of these vehicles, and am totally impressed with it. It has had a few problems but Ford fixed and paid for the repairs as it was under warrenty. It has now done 100000kms(about 60.000 miles) and is still going strong. It is a great towing vehicle to tow my 18 foot boat, which is the main reason that I brought it, and it has no problems towing it. Bit thirsty on petrol while towing boat, also around town, but is excellent on long trips. Similar Products Used: Other 4 wheel drives |

Strength:
Good power, great looks, roomy, excellent auto trans and nice truck to cruise in. I had no major problems and even those problems that I did have were covered under warranty.
Weakness:
Poor build quality, rattles squeaks and fit and finish. Several trips to the garage to try to fix various problems Bought brand new XLT 4.0lt. Had 3 recalls in the 5 years I owned it and I only did 25000km (16000 miles). Numerous rattles and squeaks and very little off road use. The transfer case filled up with water once through the breather while transversing a shallow 12" river and caused it to stay in 4WD. The service was average or below. The mechanic did the first service and hopped in with his grubby boots and put grease all over the light brown carpet. My friend has an XLT done 55000miles and has just had to have the timing belt tensioners replaced after hearing a loud tapping noise in the engine. powerful and quite comfortable and possilbly one of the best looking trucks on the marketbut let down by poor build quality. Reasonable fuel consumption 18mpg around town. 18 mpg touring towing a 1.2ton jet boat. 23 mpg touring no boat. Similar Products Used: Mitsubishi L300 4WD |
