Model Reviewed: Excursion

Strength:

tons of room (major differential from Expedition and Navigator), impresiveness on the road, luxury interior-seats are excellent

Weakness:

oversized heated mirrors (we couldn't find one with the options we did want but without these mirrors)-they look very "trucky"; the turning radius and gas milage can't really be noted--it's part of the package for a vehicle this size. Need to be able to afford the gas--44 gallons is a big tank!

Fortunate member of Ford A plan so price was fixed. Greatly recommend this vehicle for buyer that wants passenger and cargo in same package!! Nothing out there compares. Not a bear to park once you get used to it-need 2 spaces for single-move-drive-in park or one space if you park it in two moves. Very easy to find in the lot! White with beige trim and interior Limited package is very complete. You will want mud flaps due to the clearance--about $65 from Ford parts dealer. Running boards are excellent and having them lit is a nice feature. It is still a great purchase on price because it has been a tough model for ford to move--great deals out there now with the 2001s coming.
Need to measure your garage--this is a high vehicle. The antenna is still 4" higher--probably good to get a replacement that is shorter.

Strength:

The diesel motor, economy for size, size, towing capacity, snow capabilities. The Greenies hate it.

Weakness:

In city parking, limited suspension travel in front, lack of sway bar in rear, and poor shocks.

The Excursion is the kid bus during the week, and goes back and forth over the mountains most weekends year round. In the winter we use it to pull snowmobiles and in the summer a 7000lb. boat. With the Ex. you can load up the tow vehicle with people and stuff and still tow with ease, something we could not do with either suburban, they were way overrated.

The diesel engine make the Ex. a real sleeper, it get better mileage, then many of the compact, US & imported SUV's, we consitently get 16-18, and have gotten a high of 22 on extended road trips.

Parking can take a while to get used, to, having driven pickups for years, it seems actually smaller, but compared with the suburban it seems large.

We have not had a single warranty issue, or quality complaint, and with the market being soft due to the bad press these things were getting, they were marked down pretty good on the car lots.

In general if you have use for a vehicle of this size and capacity, then I would recommend the Excursion.

78 Wagoneer, 89 Grand Wagoneer, 92 Suburban, 98 Suburban. The Ex. is much more vehicle then any of the previous ones owned. The latest suburban was a total piece of junk, couldn't go 6 months without a major repair, and the GM build quality is lousy. The Jeeps were low tech old 4x4's but were sturdy and dependable, the 78 went to 265,000 miles prior to moving on. The Excursion, is built far better than the suburbans, and is more vehicle for the $ than a new suburban.

Strength:

Great vehicle... just ordered 2002 model with the new changes coming. New headlights, different upper model, second row buckets, etc.

Weakness:

5.4 engine is a little weak. Will order the V10 next go around. Ride could be improved. Don't like the Firestone tires that came with the vehicle.

Great product. lots of room. New changes for 2002 will make the vehicle even better.

Strength:

Roomy...does the job... that's about it.

Weakness:

This monster is the epitome of the bloated, gass-guzzeling, fast food supersized, gimme gimme FAT American lifestyle. I only used it for business- to transport groups of clients. However, at least I had a reasonable purpose for buying such a vehicle... unlike the spoiled suburban trophy wife who's husband buys it so that she can cart their 2 kids to soccer practice. I see way too many people driving these things around who should be behind the wheel. The size makes you feel safe? Well guess what! You're only protecting yourself from other drivers like you-- stupid women who don't look where they're going because they're putting makeup on in the mirror while their little hellspawn children are bouncing all around in back. I feel sorry for anyone who drives an otherwise safe car but gets hit by one of these.

Yet another disgusting example of the mindless consumerism and over-sizing mentality that is America.

Model Reviewed: 4x4 Limited Diesel

Strength:

The Power Stroke Diesel is what makes this a five star vehicle.I paid $1.35 gal on my last fill up when gas is $1.65 or more. And with 44gal tank I fill up only once a month.Dutch doors are great along with backup alarm.

Weakness:

Ford should have put Bilstein shocks and rear sway bar on it.

On a long trip with five adults we removed the third seat and had tons of space for all kinds of gear. Third seat has wheels and is easy to remove.I have hit a high of 25.4mpg at a steady 55mph but average 16 around town and 20 on trips (55-85 mph).I love looking down on all the other SUV's.
On the Navistar (engine manufacturer)web site an average 90% of all PSD engines made reach 250,000 miles without any major repairs. And with 500 Ft Lbs Tq @ 1,500 rpm it will stay in overdrive on the highway above 45 mph.As far as I am concerned this PSD/Excursion combo is the ultimate truck lovers SUV.

Strength:

It tows our 30' house trailor like it was nothing. It's roomy and handles nice.

Weakness:

Nobody up here listed getting shocked when exiting the drivers door. Sometimes it just a small shock, and sometimes.....CRACK. But there is always a shock when I get out of the truck. Oh yea, it's hard to park

I like the truck, except for getting shocked. A bit over-priced, but it's a great vehicle for long distance driving or towing anything.

Strength:

This will be my first experience with Ford in several years, I was given a new Excursion to take on an extended test drive[2000+ miles] and loved it. It ran a consistent 16 mpg on an imperial gallon and was a joy to run. Not to mention the envious stares. Based on what I've seen on the web site this seems to be a good price.

Weakness:

Haven't found any yet, but I'm sure it will have a few bugs

No direct experience with this truck but will keep you posted.

Strength:

INTERIOR ROOM AND COMFORT OF THE SEATS . YOU DON'T FEEL TIRED AFTER A LONG TRIP. FUEL MILEAGE OF THE DIESEL

Weakness:

VIBRATION BETWEEN 55 AND 65 MPH . HARSH RIDE ON ROUGH ROADS . I BELIEVE THAT THEY COULD HAVE BEEFED UP THE SUSPENSION

I COMPARE IT TO A SUBURBAN AND I FEEL THE THE EXCURSION IS A BETTER VALUE . WHEN I COMPARED PRICES ON THEY WEB SITES THE PRICE OF THE SUBURBAN WAS MORE AFTER YOU ADDED ALL THE OPTIONS . ALSO I DID NOT SEE A DIESEL OPTION . YOU REALLY CAN'T BEAT THE FUEL ECONOMY WITH THE DIESEL ALONG WITH A 10.000 POUND TOWING CAPACITY . THE ONLY THING THAT I CON'T FIGURE OUT IS HOW MY F250SUPERDUTY ALSO WITH A DIESEL RIDES BETTER

Beautiful car to drive to the beach on a hot summer day. I love the looks that I get when I drive. Mustang Cobra is a fun car to drive and has a great sounding engine. If you want a fast sleek car the Mustang Cobra is the car for you.

Strength:

Diesel-good mileage, roomy interior easy access to all seating areas, great protection for family in the even of an accident

Weakness:

haven't found one yet

I bought this vehicle as a wedding present for my wife and myself. It is for hauling the kids (4) and family (inlaws-room in the back). The mileage is GREAT for such a big SAV (Suburban Assalt Vehicle) and it has great towing ability with no reduction in power. So far everyone loves it, and its hard to get it away from my wife.
