Ford Escape XLT
Strength:
Comfort, towing ability, 4wd, stereo and general fit, finish and quality inside and out. Good power in the V6. Mileage about 21-22 with synthetic oil.
Weakness:
Flat cargo area is nice but stationary front seat prohibits hauling of longer items like my Saturn Vue. Needs more pockets for stuff. Dimming/compass mirror should be standard. Shipped with carpeted mats so rubber mats were extra. No space to store head rests when seats are folded down. Rear parking brakes creak and don't set properly. Good solid car, bought on referral from a friend with a 1991 with 85k on it. Overall It's the best Ford I've owned out of a Escort (89) Taurus (89) SHO (90) and Thunderbird (86). Based on reviews I expect lower long term costs than my other Fords which were expensive over 100k. Similar Products Used: Saturn Vue (03), Chevrolet Suburban (99), Ford Escape (91), Jeep Cherokee. |

Looks strong and is dependable, gives you confidence whether you are in traffic or offroad in the snow, good gas milage for an suv, nice interior, comfy, and the cd changer is a nice touch, especially on long road trips
Weakness:
speakers are starting to go out at 50,000 miles, alternator replaced once, tends to have to much power on slippery roads and wants to slide easily overall its a great vehicle, gives you a feeling of comfort and security with the all wheel drive and plenty of power with the 3.0 engine. However the alternator went out at 50,000 miles, and trying to change that was major, had to pull the entire wheel assembly and cv axle out, and lift the body off the frame, and the cruise control is a little picky, sometimes it works sometimes it don't. It is fun to drive, but you can't expect it to handle likes a sports car. Similar Products Used: this is our first suv, but we will definitely wear this one out and get another escape, good job ford |

Escape XLT
Strength:
Looks Sharp! Peppy and light but at the same time doesn't feel like the wind is going to blow you off the road. Definately recommend the XLT package!!
Weakness:
Fords are bad about groaning noises coming from the wheel assembly! I must say that I have fallin in love with my Escape! I traded a 1995 4x4 Cherokee Sport that should have been driven off a cliff many years ago! My Jeep had been through some rough times (was introduced to the rear end of a Z71) and even though it ran well and the 4wd still worked perfectly there was a lot left to be desired...but it was an 11 year old vehicle so with that into consideration it was a great vehicle. I have my complaints about my Escape...but I got it used with 66,000 miles on it. The transmission has what I beieve to be a sensor going out, and the right passenger strut thing is knocking and groaning! However, the kind folks at Cook-Whitehead Ford are covering the repairs and have put a small warranty period on the vehicle. I would definately recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a small SUV that doesn't feel cheap! The 200hp V6 has spooked me a couple times when leaving the light...but I'm so used to having to "gas it" from a stop to get anywhere. In all fairness, the Jeep Cherokee Sport was ok for hunting and 4-wheelin, but it had no ammenities! I will say this though, after 11 years everything including the lighter, still functioned normally. I only hope that I can get as much use out of my Escape as I have out of the Cherokee...only I won't be offroading! To sum it all up...I love my Escape! Similar Products Used: Cherokee Sport

Strength:
Stylish, comfortable, good gas mileage (25 or so when not pulling anything), well-priced, adequate cargo and passenger space, few maintenance issues. Good, not great, acceleration and good handling with minimal body lean.
Weakness:
Wind noise, lack of low range in the tranfer case, rattles that developed in the cargo door. Overall we like the vehicle. We have 87,000 miles on it, most of which are highway miles. Gas mileage is decent, even get 16 mpg pulling a trailer. Interior fit and finish could be better, but are OK for the price range. Comfortable with adequate interior space. A lot of wind noise but an excellent stereo to cover it up. Major problems have been the stereo, which was replaced after one year, some loose clamps on the pollution controls, which was aggravating but finally fixed. and a rattle in the rear door. The exterior door handle on the front passenger side has quit working but should be a minor fix, and recently there have been problems with idling, which will be addressed immediately. All previous problems fixed under warranty by the dealer. It is a good value for the price and we would consider buying another Escape when we need to replace this one. Ours is 4 X 4 and does OK off road but is definitely not a serious off road vehicle. Our Series Land Rover handles those chores. We recommend it for anyone looking for a competent, comfortable small SUV. We have owned three Jeep Cherokees and Grand Cherokees and, except for the fact that the Escape is not a true off road vehicle, we think they compare quite well. Ford Escape XLT 3.0 Liter
Strength:
Decent fuel mileage. Listed as 23 highway, I have often made as high as 26. Fairly good acceleration considering size.
Weakness:
Interior is chaeap looking and of less-than-stellar quality considering high price tag. Escapes Mazda counterpart is far better appointed, as is Mercury Mariner (for same price) Car had to have computer redone as car was pinging heavily in all conditions. A/C not up to snuff in even moderately warm weather--on a hot day you might as well open the windows.
Car has some good point, and some glaring bad ones. I have purchased Ford products for the last 27 years and this will be my last |

Escape XLT
Strength:
The overall design is very functional. The features and options for the price is very reasonable.
Weakness:
The quality really needs to be adressed. We just had my warranty expire and we just have this feeling it will be an expensive vehicle over the next couple of years. It is a shame that Ford comes up with a great design and then ruins it (and turns off customers in the process) by not putting in the needed quality to make them competitive with their Asian counterparts. We have mixed feelings on this. On one hand, we like the functionality and the overall design---it was superior to what we test drove at the time. We still like the vehicle overall in terms of design. As time goes on, we are increasingly concerned with the reliability. It has had numerous problems (replaced tranny 16000 kms, automatic idle control twice, igition cylinder once which is going again and some type of brake mechinism needs to be replaced. Copper in the brake fluid, which I am told isn't unusual for newer cars. Just need to flush it. The CD player is skipping frequently and is starting to become tempermental. I only have put on 67,000 kms too over 4 years. The fit and finish is subpar---things are just sloppily put together and after awhile, it really becomes evident. We bought a 2003 Impala at the same time too and have had no problems whatsoever and it has virtually the same milage on it. Perhaps that is apples to oranges. The dealer also played a few games with us and we didn't appreciate that. Overall, this was our first Ford and it will be our last. Price paid is in Canadian dollars. |

Comfy ride as mentioned. Good looks...sharp looking. Nice handling. Awesome air and heating...! Backseats are roomy and quite comfy for those long trips.
Weakness:
Small tank/Gear shift and ignition positioning(ford did goof on this one)!! Couple minor squeeks. So far...so good! Bought this vehicle with 61000kms and all is well. Overall look and ride is quite satisfactory. Very comfortable ride handles very well on highway and city. Mechanically sound. Love this little SUV! |

Strength:
Good lines, good power except when the engine blows. Good shifting except when the transmission blows.
Weakness:
Need I say more I purchased my Ford Escape in January 2002. When I drove it out of the lot the temperature sensor light would not go off. It took 3 visits to fix it. At 10,000 miles the engine blew and it took five weeks to replace. At 48,000 the radio/CD player had to be replaced, At 60,000 the transmission blew, and took two weeks to replace. At 88,000 there were three cracks found in the manifold. A gasket in the manifold had to be replaced. At this same mileage the oil pan gasket was leaking and had to be replaced. Additonally, there was a bad water leak on the drivers side coming up through the floorboards during our rainy season that had to be fixed. All the brake pads had to be replaced at about 35,000. It is now stalling on me and skipping so I am hoping it is only the fuel fiilter when I visit the dealer once again tomorrow. |
