Acura MDX SUV | Crossover

Acura MDX SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The Acura MDX is Acura’s midsize luxury crossover SUV with seating for seven occupants. The MDX has a refined and powerful 300-hp V6. It is more agile and quieter than its predecessor. The third-row seat folds easily into the floor and is a better fit for kids than adults. The dashboard is a sea of tiny, similar-looking buttons. Crash-test results are impressive.

Strength:

seats, very comfortable ride construction excellent safety rating good value, loaded for a great price

Weakness:

rear seatbelt coming out of roof drink holders to small back door, too heavy need to buy door molding option to prevent dings weaknesses were only minor things, safety and drive are my main concern

I went to give the MDX a test drive as I am looking to dump my 2002 Jeep GC Overland. Overall I found it to be constructed well. The seats were absolutely fabulous, great support, nice leather. The simulated wood in the interior was awfully cheesy though. There are a lot of drink holders in the vehicle, however they are very small and doubt they would hold a very large drink. I really did not like the seatbelt that came out of the roof for the rear middle person. It comes right across your line of vision in your rear view mirror. I found the lift gate very heavy and hard to close but most say over time it gets a little easier. It is unfortunate that the glass does not open seperately as I find that a handy feature. I also was not totally impressed with the layout of the instrument panel. It stopped and handled well, I liked overall appearance and it is on my list, but am waiting to check out new Volvo SUV soon. Was a little disappointed that DVD player and navigation system was not available in Canada.

Strength:

Versatility for passengers and cargo. Roomy for adults and generous cargo space (can fit a full sheet of plywood in the back). Lots of latches for baby or tie downs. Lots of cup holders. A cigarette light plug in the back. Awesome turning radius. Good looking SUV. Cost the same as any SUV with all the extras. Good pick-up at low torque.

Weakness:

Kind of cheeze interior. Plastic headset mixed with simulated wood grain plastic accents. No pickup at high torque (freeway driving). Don't buy the luggage rack unless it comes with your model. It can only hold 100#. That means you can only hold two bikes without having to worry they'll fly off. Forget about the optional interior bike rack. Go buy the components at a bike shop for 100% less. No key remote botton that opens the back hatch separately from the passenger doors.

We bought the car to accomodate driving the family around bike and cargo around. We love it for it's versatility. All the seats in the back fold down to allow different configurations. It's wide enough to fit two adults and a baby seat in the middle row. The back row fits small individuals (kids). There's latches everywhere to accomodate the new child car seats or to latch down cargo. The turning radius is awesome. My wife at first was hesitant to drive the car since she was afraid of driving "big cars and trucks", but after her first drive, she loved it. She said it drives like a car. The navigation system is excellent but not perfect. My wife is lousy with directions, so it has been very useful for her. No more yahoo maps. Get the cargo net, all weather mats and cargo liner. Very useful.

Definately the best mid-sized luxury suv out there. Test drove them all before choosing my X. Great Value here in Canada about $10,000 U.S less than in the States. Can't wait to see how the 4WD works in the snow this winter eh.

Strength:

Black, White, Mesa Beige, Silver appear problem free. STAY CLEAR OF HAVASU BLUE.

Weakness:

I met with the Acura rep at the dealer along with the Service Mgr. After many excuses; he agreed that there was a problem with the paint. He offered to have the doors and bumper painted or pay for some accessories. None of these are an option for me. I didn’t spend over $40k for a brand new car to have it repainted because Acura made a mistake. I paid the full retail price (approx. $6k over invoice) for a brand new car with the original paint and received absolutely no discounts or breaks in the price. Once the vehicle is repainted, the value drops. I want a new vehicle or some fair compensation. Acura won’t do either. When I want to sell the car in the future, I will have to disclose that it isn’t the original paint. The potential buyer will assume it has been in an accident. No agreement was made and it is quite obvious this will have to be settled in court.

I did my research before making the final decision on which SUV I wanted to buy. After many great reviews, I decided this would be my next vehicle. Because of the unique color, I chose the Havasu Blue. While examining the car prior to my purchase it seemed odd that the colors on the doors were different. The salesman assured me it was the sunlight that caused it. I figured I must be out of my mind and purchased the vehicle. Acura wouldn't possibly put out a two/three toned, mismatched color vehicle out and put a sticker price of over $40k. One week, two weeks, three weeks go by and I still notice the color difference in the sunlight as well as the shade. I take it to a body shop and sure enough he agreed. The paint definitely does not match. All four doors are different colors. The two front doors match the front panels and the two rear doors match the back panels. The back bumper matches the back portion of the vehicle but the front bumper is darker than the front of the vehicle. Additionally, between the doors on both sides of the vehicle there is yet another color. It's much lighter than the other colors and is about 15" in length and 3" wide. The body shop indicated that it looked as though it has had bodywork done. With this new information I headed back to the Acura dealer. I spoke with the GM, Svc. Mgr. as well as two other service techs. They all agreed, "THE VEHICLE'S PAINT IS MISMATCHED". They checked the history of the vehicle and informed me that it had not had any bodywork done. Luckily there was another Havasu Blue MDX on the lot. Sure enough, same identical problem bumper, doors, 15" streak on both doors. It became obvious that it came off the assembly line like this and that yes; Acura put this vehicle out for sale with this defect. I have since seen two others with the same problem (not a popular color). The dealer informed me that they couldn't help me since it's a manufacturers defect. They instructed me to come back a month later to have an Acura rep see the vehicle.

Model Reviewed: Acura MDX w/Touring Package

Strength:

Excellent Value Pretty much everything is Standard Quick for a 7-pass SUV with a V6 20MPG avg fuel economy Handles well with a nice ride

Weakness:

Brand New the rear Gate needs to be shut Firmly or it wont be really closed. This goes away when broken in. VTM-4 light and engine check light come on periodically. The check engine light is usually just a loose fuel cap, goes away when tightened. Not good offroad, but hey, this isn't for Offroading, its for comfort and practicality.

Got on the waiting list. Waited 3 months for this car. It was well worth the wait. The one things I loved about this car is that almost everything is Standard! only 2 options, Nav, Touring Package. I opted for the touring package. Lets start with the interior. All leather seats, and nice plush ones too. 10 cups holders for 7 passengers, gotta love that. Very Versatile seating config. All seats fold down easily, for class leading cargo space. Rear seats recline, very nice for long rides(3hr+). Lots of leg room for rear passengers. the two way back seats are a tight fit for a real person, but are perfect for children. Sound system is superior. Bass is good and I love the 6 CDs in the dash, not trunk like most cars. All dash controls are intuitive. On to the engine. 245 horse in a ULEV V6 is good is good my book. Gettin 20mpg with 0-60 in 8.1 seconds in a 7-pass vehicle is hard to beat. BMW beats X5 4.4 beats it to 60 but with 5 -pass and a guzzling V8.

Handeling Awesome Navigation system Comfortable Roomy

Weakness:

Lack of side moldings Expensive accesories

It's been two weeks now & maybe I still need a little more time before I can write a full review but I do want to comment on how pleased I am with my new MDX. I am very surprised by the good handeling. I don't feel I am driving an SUV. It doesn't feel wobbly when you're driving on the freeway. Going around turns, I feel secure & I don't get that tip over feeling with other SUV's I've driven. The Navigation System is easy to use and pretty accurate. The other feature I liked was the third seats go flush in the back so you don't have to remove them to make more room.
