Strength:

Nice interior,good resale value.

Weakness:

Weak pickup, poor overall performance. Bad blind spots,REALLY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR,AND UPGRADE!!!!

Very disappointed in my purchase. I have been racing cars for a living for 10 years, and this car is highly overrated. Was beat by a stock Trans Am WS6,after I put 2 thousand dollars in upgrades to my car. I see alot of posts on this site about how their 88 supra beat a 5.0,or a Trans am. I dont' see that happening. Unless the supra has major mods on it. The bottom line is a stock supra cant beat a stock mustang, period. Hel*,I could put $20,000 in mods on a beatle and a corvette. But that is the point, just because you put mods on a car and beat another car, does not mean you cars badge is better than the other. Put two stock cars at the line, and the supra will come up short everytime. If you want a true sports car for performance, not looks, don't look twice at a supra. they are they most overrated, overpriced cars on the market.

Strength:

- Smooth and very refined
- nice torquey engine, nice high end
- SUPER easy to modify
- Super fast
- VERY reliable

Weakness:

- Big, heavy... that's about it. But the power and torque of the engine makes up for the weight of the car.

I love my Supra. It's making about 310 hp right now. I run the snot out of it and nothing has happened. I have 140,000 mils on it, and it runs like new. Still very strong. Parts aren't that expensive, cause nothing ever breaks. Also, my head gasket hasn't gone on me, so I dont think it's ever going to go now. hehe...

Strength:

Great fun to drive, even after 8 monthes I still look for a reason to drive it some place. Always turning peoples heads and I get compliments non stop. Targa top in the summer is such a blast. Drove it this winter and it did great thanks to some nice snow tires and a bag of sand in the trunk.

Weakness:

As you've likley read, supra's eat head gaskets. I put 1500 into fixing mine and pray it doesnt go out again. They are expensive to maintain, parts and repairs will break the bank so dont buy one unless you've got some cash at hand. You also have to watch it in the wet, the rear end steps out with little warning, but is easy to correct.

I'm very pleased with the car and will be looking to add a 5 speed turbo to the collection. But if your a first time Supra buyer, save yourself the trouble and buy one with full service history and if it has high miles, then also find one with a new headgasket. Take care of it and you will have a wonderful sports car that will out shine just about any other car on the road, not just in performance but in looks, confort, reliability, and fun.

Fast, Extremely upgradable, Has ALSD (Advanced Limited Slip Differential) Will smoke a pair of tires like nothing. Will Whoop the crap out of any of those american makes, Ford Mustang, Pontiac Trans AM...Anything!!! Made by Toyota!!

Weakness:

Head Gasket went out in my supra. Probably because I ran it like a sports car!!

I love the toyota supra no matter what year. It is an inexpensive car. Inexpensive to maintain if you don't drive it hard. Easily modded up to 500 rwhp I've seen the MKIII up to 800 rwhp!!! Handles like it is on rails! Only problem is the head gasket is known to blow easily.

It's an automatic 86.5 MA70 Toyota Supra which has an MZ20 (Toyota Soarer) 7MGTE engine. Currently HKS staged 3 plus plus.

Suspension setup:-

TRD TEMS 3 point adjustable shocks (thing is I don't have TEMS...bummer)
TRUST springs, GREX strut tower brace, 17 inch custom made 3 piece SIMMONS rims, 8 inches wide up front with 235/45 Yokohama S1-Z rubber, 9 inches rear with 255/40 Yokos as well.

Performance mods:-

Intake side - UNIfilter rampod style, GReddy front mount intercooler, bosch 'the hooter' BOV, TVVC Limited Edition gold billet manual boost controller set to standard boost cos I hit fuel cut alot and haven't gotten around to fitting the FCD device, *sits for about 10 mintues thinking of what else and concludes there IS nothing else on the intake side*.

Fuel delivery - stock except for a VG30DETT fuel pump. Still waiting for the money tree in my back yard to start bearing 'money fruits' so I can pick up the HKS VPC I visit frequently at my friends shop...*must remember to get compost in the morning...*

Exhaust side - Cusco 80mm downpipe, no cats, more 80mm stainless steel piping which opens up to 85mm then expelled through a 5 inch tip. All piping after the 'no cats' are courtesy of GReddy BL Power Extreme.

Japanese reliability myths, resale value

When it came time to sell the Sunbird I wanted something that was a 'sports car' but winter drivable. I tried this and that and decided on the Supra. Once purchased the excitement faded quickly. Though faster than my beaten up Sunbird, the Supra could not keep up with a simple 89 Pontiac 6000! Then you figure the repairs that came one after another and it's poor traction in rain followed by an equally inadequate interior layout. The noise inside the cabin was unreal, the car had problems starting intermittently. I dropped it onto another believer and never looked back. I preferred all of the cars in the above list to the Supra but decided on the Z28 with a 6 speed. Great winter car by the way, only spun in snow once on the first day of winter, not once since.

Strength:

Very strong car, engine can get more powerful if i can find somewhere to get upgrades.

Weakness:

Toyota parts are expensive and hard to find for the 4ME engine. The transmissions (auto) seem to be too week for this engine,as my car will be going on it's 4th in the 12-15 years it has been in my family.

Once again, i can't find parts, and taking the dash off to put the stereo in is gonna kill me or what ever poor soul i hire to do that. Everyone should buy this car because that way more after market parts would be made. Toyotas can take a beating and keep going. I kinda learned to drive on this car, and now it is mine, i was offered a newer car for the same price, (free) and i turned it down for a gen I supra. Quality 1!

Strength:

Easy to modify into the worlds best sport coupe. Great speed (11.8sec)and 121.7mph in qtr mile. Great handling. Has enough creature features and has been very reliable and tight.

Weakness:

Stock clutch isn't going to be adequate if you modify the power.

This is the longest I've owned a car (2.5 yrs). Next longest was my Viper (1.5 yrs). Keeping the stock turbos I put almost 20K into upgrades including suspension, wheels, exhaust, boost enhancements, etc. It dyno'd out at about 550 hp at the crank with similar torque figures. The car has been totally reliable going on two years now. The work was done by Primespeed in Marblehead, Mass. The only problem I had was with the stock clutch. It simply can't handle this kind of power without slippage so it was replaced with a heavier duty clutch. I've taken the badging off of the car so even with that monster rear wing most people think its either an eclipse or celica. SURPRISE!!!!! If you're into performance with a reasonble amount of comfort and have the $$$$ this represents a great value in terms of world class results.
