Toyota MR2 Sports

DESCRIPTION

The Toyota MR2 is a mid engined, rear-wheel drive, 2-seater sports car manufactured by Toyota Motors Corporation of Japan. Mark I, II and III are the three commonly known generations of MR2. The Mark I or the first generation is produced from 1985 to 1989. It uses two types of engine such as the normally aspirated version manufactured from 1985-1989 and the supercharged version produced from 1985-1989.

Produced from 1990-1995 and extended until 1999 for Japan and other countries is the second generation MR2 or the Mark II. It comes equipped with two engine versions, the normally aspirated manufactured from 1990-1995 and the turbocharged produced from 1990-1995. The third generation or Mark III commonly known as the MR2 Spyder is considered as the first convertible model. It is produced from 2000 with its normally aspirated and turbocharged engine version. Its classic creation is better known to be boosted by MR2 Toyota Parts. Fit, precise, and top-quality are the distinct characteristics of these parts.

Strength:

Gorgeous styling, competent and aggressive handling. Power delivery is strong, especially when modified. A wheel/tire upgrade brings horrifyingly good grip ;) Gas mileage is good, especially on the highway. Ability to park in tiny spots is a key in the city. Ergonomics are second to none. Whoever thought up the Mr2's cockpit design deserves a medal. Flawless styling brings stares, compliments and offers to buy the car, even 12 years after mine was manufactured... and glancing back out the rear window over the engine deck vents is sure to bring a fat infectious grin. Engine is downright bulletproof. Transmission is downright bulletproof. Suspension, Axles and hell even the flipup light motors are all bulletproof.

Weakness:

Working on this car involves either deep pockets for the labor, or a pristine tool collection, patience and a set of Factory service manuals. 91-92 MR2's have tiny wheels resulting in a somewhat squishy feel during cornering, not so apparent with 93+ models. 205 rear tires on the 91's compared with 225 rears on 93+ models results in a tail-happy nature that only experienced drivers should mess with. Most mechanics look at the MR2 and back away slowly with fright. The factory paint oxidizes easily on MR2's, most noticeable with red models. 91-92's have synchro issues in the transmission around the 100k mark. Working in the engine bay is cramped and difficult. Oil filter is in possibly the stupidest location i've ever seen. (right next to hot exhaust manifold). Aftermarket parts are usually expensive and difficult to locate. Maintenence on this car takes twice the time of a normal front engine car. Passengers always complain about the cramped cockpit. Car does not come with a "Go to Hell" sticker to prevent said complaints.

Once i was bitten by the MR2 bug, it began an obsession that continues to this day. Many people love this car because of the looks, the value and the performance, but to TRULY love and ENDURE with this car, you have to be dedicated to it. When you own an MR2, it's hard to enjoy another car half as much. Took me forever to locate the right one for me - they're rare and hard as heck to get ahold of, but it's SO worth it in the end :) 135,000 miles on mine and it's running strong and sharp, never fails to put a smile on my face.

Strength:

everything, power, stereo, AC, heater, comfort, handling, styling, just perfection in a car.

Weakness:

mid-engine design is hard to work on, but very rewarding and in a sense, easier to learn on.

It is a truly amazing machine. Just sit in it and smile, drive it and smile more. It is the perfect blend of luxury, power, handling, everything, well, perfect short of a new ferrari, but for a 1991-1995 car, it is simply amazing. It still looks great, drives great, and leaves me feeling like i've just been on a rollercoaster ride. Handling is tricky, but very enjoyable and the learning curve is steep, but very rewarding.

Strength:

looks, handling, realiability, rarity, everybody loves it. ive been complimented by strangers while i was sitting in my car eating wendys and standing next to it getting ice cream! and yes, you CAN keep up with most cars out there. good thing about the NA-nobody expects it to be quick, so it's surprising. having the engine sit behind you gives an amazing sound that no soup can exhaust tip honda will give.

Weakness:

not a family car, and not for a person that likes drivin people around.(im neither so i love it!) for my lead foot, lack of power, but im workin on it.

The mr2 is an amazing car. its styling and rarity are matched by cars many times its price. i bought mine 2 years ago for perhaps more than i should have. but at the time, it had only 39,900 miles and was stock. it now has 80,000 miles, and i commute to school 50 miles each way 4 days a week. no problems, except for the fact the alternator belt snapped from sittin for so long and the radiator went about a year ago. other than that, very strong, i dont drive "nice", and have brought it to the track. off lights, the na shines to about 50 mph, then it slows down, then picks back up high in 4th gear. its DEF NOT a straight line car, however. it's about taking corners hard and looking good doing it. things that ive pulled on: porsche 944, 83 mustang 5.0, 88+94 camaro v6, eclipse gs with intake, exhaust, and a header. i also beat a shelby cobra at the track to 60 feet! the na is an awesome launching car, and can probably beat a mr2 turbo through first. the car puts a smile on my face every time i get in it to go somewhere. i look for excuses to go out just to drive it!

Light, handles like a dream

Weakness:

room for your stuff

The Reviewer below obviously does not know what they are taking about. You need to think about the power to weight ratio. The new mr2s are extremely light. So light, that their 0-60 times are LESS then 8 seconds. Read the specs, idiot, before you post something that's completely WRONG. And by the way you're an idiot.

Strength:

Fun, fun, fun. Tires are cheap. 30+highway/25 City Cheap in the used car market. You rarely see a really nasty one. Not terribly difficult to work on for a mid-engine car. Insurance is reasonable.

Weakness:

At 100K mi it turned into a Fiat. Small, really scary when an SUV cuts you off. 0-60 in 8sec was quick at one time

I bought this car new in 1985 and it has delivered 15+ years of trouble free reliable service. At Year 16 and about 100K mi (not much for a Toyota) it went south. The following may help you not get a problem car: Look for head gasket leakage. The head gasket on mine was improperly installed at the factory. Repalcing them is expensive or a real pain depending on your wealth or skill level. If the car loses coolant at all and the waterpump is not leaking, you have a bad head gasket. Crack the cap and look at coolant level one you buy before your test drive. Waterpump-get a flashlight and look at it. If encased in crud, it leaks. Count on $400 unleass you take it to Toyota who will charge you more. Alternator-they go Starter-on my third. They are awful to get to. distributor-if the check engine light blinks 6 it will cost you another $400. Throttle Position Switch-easy fix at about $150. Computer-Used ones abound. Another $400. This is a rip roaring gas to drive. The MR2 is a poor person's 911 without the personality. They are easy on tires and gas and easy to work on for a mid engine car. Big people fit easily. Goes where you point it.

Strength:

I feel the #1 strength of the MR2 is its looks. The genII MR2 (91-95) is more or less a Ferrari body, since Ferrari's chief designer helped Toyota design the car. Now of course looks are always subjective, but I really don't see how you could dislike the smooth, but not overdone styling of this car. Next to looks I would say that handling is the next best strength. It is really hard to explain in words, but this car handles better than any other that i have driven. If you haven't driven one of these cars quit reading this, find one and drive it. Then after you do that read these reviews and decide if it is the car for you. Another strength is the fact that this car came standard with Toyota dependibility, look at consumer reports Toyota (and Honda) are the way to go. T-Tops. I love T-tops and think they are the greatest thing, if you get an MR2 I would definitely recomend these. Be careful though and make sure that they don't leak. these are just a few of the many strengths of this great car. Get one for yourself and you will understand.

Weakness:

The biggest weakness lies in one of its strengths, it only has two seats. this helps the car tremendously in the area of handling, but this car will never be a family car. Slightly underpowered for some drivers in NA form. Dragracers go the extra few bucks and grab a turbo. 14" rims in 91-92.

This is a true sports car. It is everything that a sports car should be, It has only two seats and the engine sits right behind you and right above the rear wheels that make the car move. The lost art of the mid-engine. the bottom line is that this car is a very incredible car and you should seriously consider one if you have the luxury of being able to own a two seater. Strength:

Chassis balance Rear drive layout suspension refinement reliability build quality value for money

Weakness:

May be considered underpowered Hard to work on

I''ve held the pleasure of owning my ''90 MR2 for more than 5 years now and have driven many cars through the same period. The MR2 is truly unique and really is a true drivers car. I worked on building and designing sport sedans for 2 years and set up many street and club racers during that time. My previous car was a Bluebird Turbo rebuilt for circuit racing, and the MR2 does most things better than this thing ever did. It didn''t have the outright grunt but the brilliant chassis balance and refined suspension made it the most enjoyable car I''ve driven this side of an Nissan GTR. The MR2 is not a car you jump into and drive fast, it''s a car you live with and learn, it''s a car you listen to and feel, and it takes time to master. This is what makes the MR2 so infectious. My MR has hit the big 180K and to date, the only expense has been the cost of new sychros for second and third gear. Practicality was not high on the list, but who cares when you''re punting the 2 around the twisties and power sliding out of second gear hairpins. Nothing can detract from the level of enjoyment afforded by blasting an MR along a beautiful piece of blacktop, save maybe a cardigan wearing Camry driver keeping well under recomended speed around the bendies.
