Strength:

Handling
Comfort - I am glued to the seat especially around a corner
Great looking car
I did say handling didn't I.

Weakness:

No adjustable steering wheel
sound system
Maintenace, water pump and timing belt just went - Ouch

Great Car I love it, it handles better than anything I have ever driven. Get tired of all those Mustangs and Cameros wanting to race. Get a real car and than come and see me. On a winding road they would be miles away and I am driving a 12 year old car.

Those germans sure are smart when it comes to building cars. it doesn't even look like an 80's car, i get that from people all the time, there are 90's cars that look older then my car. Its a great looking car, i love the popped out fenders and the slant nose. awesome handling, the best handling porsche ever! it won't cost you an arm and a leg to aquire one. i know someone who owns a 944 with 300,000 miles and he says its still going strong, so thats good news for me i only have 125,000 on mine. Did i mention that when the 944 made its first appearance at the 24 hour LeManns race it had the less pit stops out of all the cars racing there!!

Weakness:

expensive to fix, parts hard to find, mechanics hard to find. Very hard to work on by yourself.

where can i start? if you want to impress people but don't have alot of money this is the car for you. I am 18, and it is always fun rolling up into a gas station and looking at everyones eyes light up when i step out of my porsche, they can't believe that a teenager is driving a car like this! its pretty funny. 1983 was the first year of the 944 therefore porsche assembly of this car was low because of them fearing the public would not accept this car, so their really aren't those many 83 models out there, also they are old and no one wants to bother with them. Did i mention its a chick magnet! I like the car because its rare to see these cars in the streets yet when you do see them they are always turning heads. I once came up to an intersection and on the other side of the street was the same cars as mine except not black but like a black cherry color, we passed by each other and we both smiled admiring each others 944. It also cool because you are owning a peice of porsche history, you become part of the porsche family.
I always have the little rice racers (hondas, accuras, etc..) reving me, i just laugh, i hate those cars! I must see like around 100 hondas each day going to school, and sometimes i only see 1 porsche a week. its a car you can't get tired of seeing on the road. thats why they are so unique!

Model Reviewed: 944 turbo

Strength:

the body style is hot. it looks tough and fast. Its a porsche too which means a enduring engine with tons of horsepower and its all you need with a car.

Weakness:

factory stereo sucks. The rear speakers stink and sound really distorted when cranked up. If you like systems put one in cause the factory is horrible. I have heard the a.c needs work too.

I just bought my 87 944 turbo about 1 month and half ago and it needs a new head gasket. I havent yet started working on it yet but im gonna overhaul the engine. I have always wanted a turbo porsche and I didnt hesitate to pick this one up at 4000. I have cranked it up once and it sounds good. I have a 5 speed 3.0 engine which I cant wait fix it up so I can cruise with the sunroof up windows down. This is also a luxury car coming with leather seats and electric windows and hatchback opener. I have heard that the a.c and heater is not very strong and the factory speakers sound like crap when cranked up loud. If your a porsche lover this is a great car and it is a porsche which makes it even better.

Strength:

Handling is amazing, it has a perfect 50/50 weight balance and is said to be "The Porsche that is EASIEST to drive FAST". I believe it, it takes turns so fast that other drivers stare in amazement. It is also very economical, when driving hard I usually still get at least 18 MPG, and if I slow down I normally get about 24 City/ 331 Highway.

Weakness:

Pricey to fix, must research and find an excellent mechanic. Motormounts always fail, upgrade to new design will be needed at some point in the cars life. Factory stereo sucks, so I upgraded to a Kenwood CD player, eclipse 4X6 speakers, and a kicker amp and sub. Plenty of cargo space, fits my clubs with a 10" sub in the back. Electrical system very quirky.

Head turner, cheapest way to impress everyone else on the road. The cars styling was way ahead of it's time, looks newer than most cars out there. Mostly reliable, after 16 years the engine still only turns over once before it fires up. Comfortably fits tall people with plenty of room to spare.

Nothing compares except another Porsche, I had a 1994 Carrera for one weekend, it was faster of the line (Turbocharged), but I still prefer the handling on mine.

Model Reviewed: 2.7L

Strength:

build quality, handling, harsh suspension, steering, roomy

Weakness:

repairs, would like the sports suspension, cost for Parts from any normal mechanic, every 5.0, Camaro, and Acura wants to race.

I bought a 1989 2.7l, about month ago with 48k on it. I was looking for an S2, but all of them had high mileage, over 100k. The 1989 has been described as an S2 hybrid, and is the only year of the 2.7l 8v engine. It has 163hp. The car needed a timing belt, water pump, front engine seal kit. At this point you should also do the balance shaft belt and pulley, timing belt pulley, Ac/alternator belt, and power steering belt. It also needed the new motor mounts. I told the guy do whatever it needs to be a good daily driver. I had a Porsche registered master mechanic work on it at his house and charge only $40/hr for labor, and bought the parts form Vertex in Miami. They have the cheapest prices, and great parts, as long as you buy a new water pump(ie. not rebuilt). All in all it cost me $1200 for parts and labor. Very cheap considering other estimates for the same work were $2300-4000.00 The car handles like an absolute dream, is very roomy, and has a nice harsh road feel which i like. The steering is fantastic. The car is not as stable as a BMW, at speed. I have driven other 944s, a 1991 911,a 944 S2, and while not scary by any means, they don't have that solid as a brick BMW feel. They are much faster though, and handle better. The car has great power at around 80mph, drop it to 4th and it flies. Even 5th pulls at this speed. It could use more low end. This model has 20 more hp, than the pre 86 944, 13 more than a 1987, so it is the quickest of the non S2, or turbo varieties. The rubber clutch disk won't allow you to pop the clutch, because you will kill the life on it. It has the solid Porsche build quality. Compared with a non turbo 300zx, it feels like a feather weight sports car, quicker and faster than a 325is, but not nearly the low end or mid range of my recently departed 1997 328is. It also feels totally different form a Prelude or Integra, much tighter, and harsher, far more sporty. The car is meant to go fast! Highway touring speeds. I gave a late 80s, Mustang 5.0 LX, a nasty shock a few days ago. He was shadowing me at about 55mph, while I was in 4th, out of the corner of my eye I saw him preparing to cut me off, so I slammed it in to 3rd, and just blew his doors off. The car made it to 80mph quickly! He didn't want to play after that. It does need the extra 45hp, though, that the S2 has low end. If you can afford or find an S2 get that, but the 89 2.7l is much quicker than the earlier 944s and beats the 944S 0-60 and 0-100, so don't waste the money for an S, all of the reviews said nice car, but not worth the money, and it didn't have anything other than top speed over the 2.5. Overall I am very happy, and have caught the Porsche bug. There are a lot of 944s, 911s etc near DC, so occassionaly you get the "only a 994 look." If you want a true entry level Sports car, and the Porsche feel buy it. Also get a pre-purchase inspection and have 2-3K ready for repairs. If you are looking for a smaller Camry, or German Integra, Prelude, etc don't buy it. It is not a soft, family car. If you wan't to drag race and love your Z-28, Camaro SS, Firebird, or 5.0 Mustang, you proably will not like it. It is meant for handling, and high speed touring, but it isn't a red light warrior. It is much sportier than the American muscle cars.
