Strength:

Looks great
High Quality
Durability
Comfortable
It is a fantastic driver's car
Chicks love it
Good instumentation

Weakness:

Very expensive maintenance
More maintenance issues than the 911
Fuel is expensive
4 seats, but the back two are useless (I don't care though)
The NA is no where near as fast as a 944 Turbo, or Turbo S

I paid about $9000 a few months ago. This is about the average price for a good condition mid to late eighties 944, naturally aspirated. It's not as fast as the Turbo, and the Turbo has a nicer front spoiler, but it is still a fantastic car. It should hold its value, and depending on what work I do, I hope it might increase. All in all, the quality of the car is incredible, and the care Porsche took in designing this car still shows after 14 years.

I paid $3000 for my 944. Most people think that it is just a couple of years old, but it is 17 years old and has over 150,000 miles on it. It has had no major work done to it and it still looks and drives like a new car. I love the appearance of the car and the way it feels when you drive it. Best of all it is has ceased to depreciate.

I got this locally from the original owner who had it garaged every winter and maintained with the dealership. It had 48k miles (believe it!) and hardly a nick on it. Cost: $10,000. I ended up putting about $1500 in work into it (some of the seals were degrading due to all the extended storage) as well as a motor mount and water pump. Essentially the thing is new. Came with mod chip and K&N filter. Looking to mod w/ Borla exhaust and SpiralMax. A rather nice driving/style complement to my Jeep.

Weakness:

- maintanence
- big coin repairs

I bought this baby for $26,500 two years ago with 47k. Now it has 97k and I get offers for the same price I bought it for. Repairs are costly but its worth it.

Strength:

This car has absolutely magnificent handling. It feels very nimble through turns and makes driving around town, changing lanes, and just swerving in general a blast. I don't know how many times I've been driving home at night and I just started swerving back and forth on the road because it feels so nice. Own one and you'll understand.

Also, this car gets alot of looks for the price you pay. People seriously think I paid about double what I actually paid for this car, and I often hear "Ohh, nice Porsche". That's pretty good considering I'm a college student and I had a Honda CRX before this dream.

Weakness:

The only disadvantages to this car that I see are as follows:

  1. Starting off the line is not at all what you expect. It is very slow since the car is a touring car, not a rice burner. If you want fast acceleration off the line you might look towards a turbo 944, but even those lag up until 20mph.
  2. Repair and maintenance prices are higher than average, but when you feel how it drives you don't really care.

I would very highly recommend this car to anyone. I bought a 944S (no turbos, but it has DOHC instead of the regular SOHC, giving it 188hp instead of 158hp) that didn't have a very nice history. It had been towed and never picked up, and I bought it from the towing company. It had a few small dents, small cracks in the seats, and in general looked like it had more wear than 100K miles. I frankly expected it to break down quite often because of the price I paid.

Little did I know that I'd be here over 6 months later without any breakdowns or mechanical trouble. All I can recommend is just keeping up on the regular maintenance (oil changes, tune ups, and replacing the belts) to avoid those big porsche repairs.

When you test drive the car it will feel very sluggish and almost like a go-kart that weighs 3,000 pounds. Just give it some time, the power comes in right around 4000RPM and once you get it going it drives like a dream. Excellent car for the money. Makes me want to get a 911 when I get out of college.

If you're someone who doesn't care about your car then you wouldn't be reading this page. I'd recommend the 944S to anyone who doesn't answer the question "What kind of car do you drive" with "A red one".

Model Reviewed: 944 Turbo

Strength:

The car has awesome handling and great acceleration. The build quality is exceptional-- this 14 year old car is more solid and rattle-free than my 2 year old Ford. The thoughtfulness of the design is apparent in every detail. Although the state-of-the-art in automotive build quality has improved tremendously since my 951 was built, the car still acquits itself well.

Weakness:

The ride quality is 'firm'... i.e., if you roll over a dime, you can call heads or tails. This would be a little fatiguing on a long trip. The engine compartment is FULL, which makes working on the car a challenge. It takes awhile to get used to the turbo/torque curve setup in the car... once you figure out the car's sweet spot, it just pulls and pulls. Scary quick!

I love this car! It is everything I hoped for in a sports car. I have already shaved a half second off 0-60 times with 100 bucks worth of mods, and I haven't scratched the surface. It corners like a witch, and once you learn to keep the revs in the right area, you can out-accelerate almost anything on the road. I like to check the stats on other performance cars in the car mags and select only the ones that can outperform my car. Going through a 300 car listing, you only find about 7 that can meet it or beat it. These are all cars that are being built today, with 14 years of technological advance in their favor...AND a lot of them cost more than 100k! For the money, this has got to be the fastest, sharpest, best sportscar you can drive.

Parts are spendy but no more than my Volvo wagon, for example (just the way things are, I guess). And there's that undefinable quality this car has that other's just don't. I will be willing to put up with a lot of hassle to keep this car up, because it's just so cool. But so far, I haven't had to put up with anything. It's even easy on gas (26 mpg) when I'm not 'on it'.

Would I buy another? In a heartbeat. But I suspect I will be happy with this car for some time to come. There are so many mods I could make to improve the car, that I suspect I will be able to sustain the interest for many years to come.

Driving to work in this car is not a chore, it's a celebration.

Nothing similar. I've owned and driven a number of 60's vintage musclecars, also borrowed/driven a Jag 12, Dodge Stealth, etc... nothing else came close except for another Porsche, a 928 I almost bought. Happy I didn't now that gas prices are going up so fast.

Model Reviewed: 944 turbo

Strength:

It is a solid car. Very well built for a 15 year old car. The car is extremely fast. There will be a short pause for a second then the turbo would kick in you feel the horses unleashed. Very fast car. 0-60 in 6 secs with mods less then 6 secs. Handling is extremely good. I can go through a turn at 80 mph in third gear. The car looks nice, update the wheels with c2s or 993 turbo techs and its beautiful car for the new milineum.

Weakness:

Maintenance is very costly. Make sure you buy from an owner who kept up the maintenance on the car. I had to dish out close to 4,000 to fix brakes, DME fuse box for the electrical system and to fix an oil leak.

I would rate this car an A+++ in terms of looks and prestige. Its a porsche. In terms of maintenance reliablity C----. This isn't a toyota. You better be aware of all the fluids and belts on this car, because if something goes wrong be ready to pay. This wasn't my daily driver.

Model Reviewed: stocker

Strength:

* 50/50 front/rear ratio. Handles like Jesus on rollerblades, sticks like velcro. I have yet to lose control in a turn, nothing more than slight drift.
* Good value for the money.
* Fairly easy to do routine maintenance on.
* Doesn't rust easily.
* Fits a 6' tall person comfortably (rare in a sportscar)
* Loads of aftermarket parts and accessories

Weakness:

1. Valvetrain design requiring
2. MANDATORY and FREQUENT timing/balance belt replacement/adjustment.
3. Pretty poor handling on icy surfaces
4. Dashboard construction sucks (generally low-grade interior surfaces). Couldn't SOMEbody have picked a better grade of vinyl??
5. Switches, cruise-control and odometer frequently quit
6. Parts are _not_ cheap. But, this is _not_ a Tercel, kids.

This is my second 944 (#1 was a divorce casualty). I simply can not recommend a better car for carving up a rolling, twisty country road at mildly demented speeds. The handling, braking and steering of the 944 inspire near-absolute driver confidence. It will pretend it's a commuter scooter when needed, getting 25 mpg and handling rush-hour traffic without a whimper. It will also wind up like a Swiss watch and warp into "Cheetah Mode" with very little prodding. I have surprised many, many folks who didn't think this little beast had guts. It's econo-box-cheap to insure, can run on 87 octane regular gas, and turns heads at its ripe old age of 18.

Just remember: Use Mobil 1 EVERY 3K miles, "blue" racing brake fluid, keep the chassis lubricated, and have the routine maintenance done religiously and correctly. If you don't have the tools and experience, especially regarding the belts, find a VERY GOOD German-car mechanic who can spout part numbers from memory, views Stuttgart as The Promised Land, and won't vandalize your wallet, and stick with this Herr GutWrench like glue.

Picture this: you are sixteen years old you have been driving a 92 Saturn around for 6 months. You just learned how to drive a 5 speed manual. It is the first day of your junior year of high school and you pull up in a porsche. every one you see that day asks you how much did you pay and you just laugh. after school the pricipal comes up and congratulates you on have the 2nd best vehicle to come on to campus that day (some parent drove their child to school in a new ferrari while he says it even is better than his Mercedes). And that was just my first day. I have never driven a car that drives as well as this car. It has awesome acceleration (just slightly slower than my stepfathers 928 of the same year)and it will out handle any car on the road.
