Strength:
Pretty fast, not as fast as i expected, but it handles like a dream...gotta love those 16x8 rims and 245 50 R16 tires. Hot looking car still beats out any 5.0 mustang, even a camaro, in looks. Like interior layout/dash layout. Mechanically sound as the engine and transmission are damn tight after 145000 miles of use. Surprisingly, my A/C still blows cold air and all of the interior accessories still work. A pretty good car when the abuses of its previous owner are omitted.
Weakness:
Good looks obscure all the problems i've had to fix, although to be fair, some of it was due the @#$%%() moron who owned the car before me making us do-it-yourselfers look bad. Most problems i've had to deal with have been of the minor variety...nothing major. A lot of rattles and a pretty rough ride even for a car oriented towards performance. Too many wires and such under the dash and hood for fairly basic electronic functions. Cheaply made plastic interior components break/fall off/warp easily. Headlights stopped flipping up and down and i had to hunt around a junkyards for a while to find the part because getting replacements parts from GM is hard and expensive. My wraparound spoiler was made of some cheap rubber and is badly warped and cracked. I get about 14-16 MPG in combined highway/city driving, which isn't great for a weak engine (the LG4 was rated at 170 HP...obviously less factoring in 145000 miles) in a car with a manual transmission. The stock exhaust system is way too restrictive and quiet, and trying to meet emissions standards with carburetion doesn't work if you're trying to get any kind of power. Don't know why GM didn't rid their f-bodies of carbs until '88. Suffers same problem as most firebirds/camaros of the same era: good looks but not much under the hood. Still taking it on the chin at the stoplight with mustangs and some imports. Always wanted to own an F-body, particularly the third generation firebird/trans ams. Ended up buying an '87 Formula Firebird. Was the weaker base model of the Formula with the carbureted 305 CID engine w/5 speed manual transmission. Needed a paintjob, body work, interior stuff, etc etc. A good fairly reliable car thats fun to drive. Similar Products Used: This is my first car. |

Weakness:
very weak 403, hard of the pump, not much rear seating I love cruising in the car. Makes me feel like I have something differant. Not impressed at all with the 403 that came in it, soon I will swap it out for a 350 or 400. Gotta love the styling of that period though. Similar Products Used: None |

sqeeks and rattles alot but when you have two 10" rockford xlc'subwoofers blasting you cant hear that. expensive to fix and maintain. i have a black car and in the sun it fades on one side sometimes but meiguirs mirror glaze polish and wax takes that out fine. if you have a choice dont get t tops because once and a while it leaks a little bit. heats up quick at stop lights but if you use your a/c it turns on the cooling fans and keeps it cool. this car is incredible. it handles really well and it has a good amount of horsepower 275. this can easily be increased. i have 90,000 miles on it and it is doing well. i just but a borla exhaust system on the car which sounds and feels great. i have alot of plans for this car i will be getting a k&n air intake next. i would definetly recomend this car to everyone. the only thing that went out on me that was expensive was the transmission. it took about $1,000 out of my pocket. right now i have a coolant leak in the sensors. but i dont think thats too bad for a car with 90,000 miles on it. Similar Products Used: 1988 pontiac firebird v6 doesnt compare at all but i traded the bird in for the trans am when it had 112,000 miles and it had no engine problems |

WS6 Formula 350
Strength:
Barks off the tires when it shifts into 2nd gear. It's ate up a new 2001 Grand Prix Supercharged V6. There's a lot of performance parts for it. The third generation website is nice (www.thirdgen.org). It's a nice sleeper. I've even had a Tahoe and a F-150 try to race me.
Weakness:
I've had to replace: fuel injectors, heater core, brakes, fuel pump, tires, intake gasket, and valve stem seals. Only gets between 12-15 mpg. That dang Radiator Air dam is a pain. If the cat converters go out you got two of them to replace. Only has about 1 1/2 inch of ground clearance. Pulls to the right a little (frame has been bent). If you get a sports car just figure on spending money on it, they like to wear out parts. But thats what you pay for performance. Had the car for a little over a year. It had 76k miles on it now it has 88k miles on it. They had 240 hp stock. It's a nice car. I wasn't really to impressed with it when I bought it. Because it would only do about 123 mph, would lag off the start, could barely turn over the tires, the door arms were broke. But, I knew it was a great starter car, and my uncle had one similar to it back when he was in high school (only a 5.0L). I love the way the third gen looks. It was completely bone stock when I got it. It's a 350 TPI, B&M Shift Kit Improver, home made Ram-air intake made from a march performance pulley scoop (ssshhhhh! don't tell anyone its a mustang part), home-made white face gauges, Edelbrock TES headers and cat-back system, TPIS Air Foil, 22 lb Accel injectors and K&N Filter. I finally fixed those arm rests. Also looking at a MSD 6AL box to burn that extra gas. Anyways, I was just impressed how much it pulls since its still a stock motor. It handles nice. I like the 700-r4 trannie with 3.23s it will shift into OD at 125 mph when I'm racing, overwise I turn 1600 rpms at 55 mph on the high way. Only runs 0-60 5.7 seconds, 1/4 mile 14.4 at 101 mph, but hey thats under street conditions. I figure I got about 290 hp at the wheels now. Looks so mean, real fast, loud, comfortable for a sports car, If you like a mean looking sports car buy this car, looks looks looks...
Weakness:
i cant see any other then be prepared to introduce your self to the local cops because your gonna get to know them, when you get behind the wheel you are just tempted to rip this car, and once again it draws lots of attention, you will get pulled over Looks mean, fast, loud, show car, gets lots of looks, put an after market exhaust and some other upgrades and you have a full blowen racecar on the road, beats any mustang that trys to mess with you, doesnt lose to many races, always draws a crowd, if you like sports cars pontiac trans am ws6 is your car it looks mean and people get out of the way when they see and hear you coming. Like I said before beats pretty much any mustang out there with some exceptions to the guys that mess around with there engines and ratios. Similar Products Used: camaro ss-pretty much identical car, my body has one the only real diference is that my trans am ws6 looks so much more meaner!!!! |

Strength:
Plenty of power with 135k on the motor, good acceleration, plenty of room in the front seats, it will leave a lot of other sports cars in the dust.
Weakness:
No room in the back, hard to do anything on the motor other than change the oil, there are a lot of rattles but thatz to be expected because of the age, one last thing the Gas milage sucks. I bought this car as my first can and so far i am very happy with it. I have the 305 V8 in it with the quad carb and it has a lot of power for having 135K miles on it. The t-tops leak in hard rain but it is a 84 and i also blame the age for the rattles. It will kick butt of of a stop light and even when going 35-40 if you kick it, it still has the power to spin the wheels. The girls love it and thatz alwayz a plus. I am very happy with this car.
