Strength:

Performance, handling, luxury, comfort and stunning looks...what else could you want? This car is the S*IT! No Audi, Volkswagen, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Acura, Lexus, Infinity, Mustang, Corvette or anything else comes close to the total package you get with this car! If you want luxury with unbeatable performance then this car is for you!

Weakness:

none!

The legend of this car speaks for itself! It handles like it''s on rails and the performance is arousing! Mine is black on black with manual transmission and you can''t expect a 4 door car to look any better or perform any better! Not very many people can hang with me or even have the guts to try, but the few that do try get burnt everytime! Right after I pass someone up...I''ll give them the Mutombo finger, and look at them with utter disbelief! They should know better!

Model Reviewed: ///M3 Coupe

Strength:

I looked at 30 models of cars, including Prelude, Camaro, Corvette, Lexus, Mitsu 3000 GT and Eclipse, various SUV's, etc, etc. I also studied, in depth, the BMW offerings including 318, 325, 328, 528, and of course, the ///M3. After seven months of test drives, studies, and message board perusal, I decided on a certified pre-owned 1997 ///M3 which had 35K miles. It cost a lot more than what I had initially intended to spend, but I was able and willing to pony up the dough, and I do not regret it. In fact, I love this car so much, that I have actually put 26K miles on it in about 10 months! It is a real joy to drive, handles wonderfully, and has all the power I need. Also, the BMW car club is fun and informative.

Weakness:

1. Cost of decent tires, but I knew that going in. Recent set of Yokohama AVS sports: $800 mounted & balanced. That's a reasonably good deal.

2. The doors sometimes have a very slight thump, due to the fact that there are no window frames for added rigidity. This is easily remedied by adjusting the door stop.

3. The car would like to have (but doesn't really need) some aftermarket mods, like European ellipsoid headlights, stiffer sway bars, short shifter kit, cold air intake, engine software to add a few HP, etc.

4. The car is so smooth and quiet, that it's very, very easy to exceed the posted speed limit without noticing.

In my opinion, the E36 ///M3 is one of the very best combinations of luxury, comfort, panache, and performance in its class. Why would I buy a $32,000 used car and put 26K miles on it in 10 months? Because I LOVE this car, and I LOVE to drive it. If I were going to upgrade it, I would either add a supercharger or turbo, wait for the E46 ///M3, or buy an ///M5.

Mustang: no comparison whatsoever.
Corvette: more HP, but not very liveable as a daily driver, IMHO.
Eclipse: turbo adds a bit of punch, but the car is cramped, noisy, and is too ubiquitous.

FORGET BUYING ONE IF YOU LIVE IN ENGLAND WHERE ITS ALWAYS RAINING. PARTS CAN BE EXPENSIVE.

THE CARS PERFORMANCE IS NOT THE GREATEST THING ABOUT THIS CAR...ITS THE DESIGN. IN ENGLAND GIRLS JUST CANT KEEP THERE HANDS TO THEM SELVES.

Strength:

fast. very fast. the best handling, cornering car i have ever driven. merging onto the highway is now something i look forward to. the car also is comfortable at "in town" speeds and lower gears. i do not know anyone who has purchased this car who does not agree that everyday they look forward to driving it. it makes the drive to work something you look forward to, if you can believe that. oh well, the other M3 owners will understand.

Weakness:

the michelin MXX3 tires which came on the car wear out FAST, and they are very difficult to find. they are also quite expensive. their dry handling is phenomenal, but they are horrible in wet weather, especially in downpours. the car tends to "float" on these tires. the only other weakness is that once you own this car, it will be difficult to even think of buying anything else in the future.

the M3 is not cheap, nor is service, and those dreaded tire replacement issues. but i believe that the car is not overpriced considering the speed and handling. i would buy one again in a minute. the BEST overall car i have ever driven.

Strength:

Smooth power - even at low RPM - styling, wheels - handling is phenominal -I like basically everything abou this work of art. The harmon kardon stereo is the best factory stereo I ever heard.

Weakness:

don't like thge plastic body side molding and door handles - wax gets in the plastic and is almost impossible to get out - should have at least 300 hp as the european versions do, this way you can compete in speed with these american junks such as the vette and mustang gt.

I would defenitely recommend this car without a doubt - it is the best overall car I have ever owned and driven. For all you people out there that are complainig about how this car handles in the snow, go out and spend a couple of thousand on some peice of junk to get around in the winter. This car is not a 4x4 truck, it's designed for nice spring and summer days on HOT asphalt. If you spend over 40k on a car you should not be using it as an everyday car.

* Excellent handling...
* Brilliant Brakes...
* Awesome Styling... every girl is going to credit U for your choice :}
* Suspension and ride is good...
* Sports leather seats (only comes in coupe) are excellent
* sport side mirrors are out of the world... GRRRT
* SAFETY IS EXCELLENT... most safest sports car U will ever drive...
* Road handling and grip (in dry conditions) is perfect... nothing can be even compared on this one...

Weakness:

* extremely slow being a sports car... Even (Euro version with 321 horses) is slow...
* Very less horses (only 240 american version)...
* Extremely high maintenance
* Electrical system (eg interior designing) is worst...
* Every time U take it to a dealer, the price quotes are unbelievable...
* Only has 5 speed trans... Euro version has 6 speed trans...
* IF U ARE PLANNING TO BUY ONE... BUY THE ONE THAT HAS WARRANTY ON IT...

Well... Its an ///M3. Then name says it all... I have been waiting to get this car for 3 years... Finally got it. Previously I had 1994 325is... That was a better deal... Easy on maintenance... The price U paid and the value, but this ///M3 is not that of a good deal... U might call me biased with numbers but I go for the speed/performance and ///M3 being a sports car is not that much of a speed... U can get the speed by paying lot less than ///M3 and can get the Z28 or mustang GT or SVT cobra or a vette...

Strength:

Everything except the plastic rear window.

Weakness:

The plastic rear window.

I wrote the first review on this car in carreview.com, so I'm breaking the rules by writing another. I'm doing so because with any machine, the bloom of ownership fades with time...except for this one. I'm more excited about it now than when I first leased it. It's strange, but this car seems to get newer with age. The joy intensifies. I'm buying our M3 when the lease ends next week because it's resale value is darned near what I paid for it, and I cannot walk away from a car that's become a good and reliable friend. In spite of the fact I paid for it, I feel lucky to own it. Strange, huh?

The most fascinating thing about this car is that I can't describe how good it is, only how it makes me feel. My "LaserBeemer" has pushed me beyond the realm of engineering. We've entered the world of joyous mysticism, and I don't care what new car is on the horizon.

Model Reviewed: M3 Sedan Automatic

Strength:

Unreal accelaration and is absolutely the best handling car I have ever had. With four doors and an automatic this is just as good stuck in traffic during Washington D.C. rush hours or blasting around mountain roads. The perfect family/sport vehicle.

Weakness:

I hate the lack of a non-tilt wheel. That's it.

I paid $29,000 for my red sedan with sunroof, HK audio system, heated seats, 16,500 miles with a factory extended 4yr/55k and an additional 2yr/50k bmw certified pre-owned warranty. Compared to others I have seen for sale it looks like I got an incredible deal. Would you rather have this near new rocket or pay 4 grand more for an IS300 which is smaller, slower and handles less.

Model Reviewed: M3 4 door

Strength:

Slingshot Acceleration, Good Torque (has so much torque that I start it from a dead stop using 2nd gear and short shift it to 4th). The M Contour Wheels and rear spoiler make it look like a proper German Super-Touring car. In my opinion, the 4 door looks a lot sportier than the 2-dr M3's out there. The handling is 2nd to none. I appreciate the fact that you can carry 4 adults and 2 hard suitcases. Picked it up using German Delivery and saved big time. On the autobahn it topped out at 140 mph at 6500 rpm.
The amber glow from the top of the shifter at night is a nice touch.

Weakness:

This car begs for an overdrive 6th gear. I don't need the European M3's 321 horsepower but would have been willing to pay a couple thousand more to get a 6th-speed overdrive. 5th gear in US M3's is direct 1:1 ratio which is similar to other cars' fourth gear. The paint on the front spoiler chips easily. My next M3 will have the titanium silver paint which is metalic and doesn't chip as easily. It's also easier to keep clean. The European BMW's and Mercedes have cockpit adjustable headlights switch which I would like to see on US cars as well. These headlights have a city-mode (tilting downward and wider beam and highway-mode (tilting upward and narrower beam). The Dunlop 8080E tires that came with the car are horrible in the wet. On several downpours my car hydroplaned to another lane. My next set is going to be Bridgestone re-730's. The Harmon Kardon speakers (premium audio) are absolutely horrible.Why can't BMW put a nice Nakamichi audio system in their cars. I will be willing to pay the premium. The brakes squeak in stop-and-go traffic -I've finally given up trying to fix it. Sonnen BMW service in Marin just stinks. I've put more miles on my car driving back and forth to fix the same minor problems that I finally decided to try Weatherford BMW. Thank-goodness they actually listen to the customer instead of saying that I should get used to the problem because "it's normal".

Picked up my car in Germany in the summer of 98. Put 4000 miles within the span of 1 month on the German Autobahn. BMW provided free insurance for 1 month and shipped my car for free to Honolulu (ask your dealer about the European Delivery Option; they don't like to give out details because it cuts into their profit margin). With the European delivery, I got my car at a special wholesale price and built it to my specs. The only option I regret not having ordered are heated seats. They are well worth it. Titanium silver was not available for 98 but could have been special ordered if I gave BMW sufficient time- usually 4 months (I ordered my car too late when the 4 doors were just being discontinued). You must experience the european delivery process at least once in your lifetime. You will never forget the experience of speeding down the autobahn. It's very addictive.

Strength:

Best daily car for the price, maybe even at any price. balance of performance and comfort.

Weakness:

small annoying problems... all the time.

It looks great, but is starting to show its age. Performance to me is okay, coming from cars like the Lotus and Rx-7, the performance of the M3 did not really impress me, in fact I was disapointed. Before I bought the car I talked to a lot of M3 owners, and they ALL told me the M3 performance ROCKS!!! After owing it for a couple of months, I am now adding performance products on it to make in suit my taste. I guess I am spoiled by all th Turbo cars I've own. Don't get me wrong, the M3 is a great performer, but just too slow for me.

Handling is good, it felt the same as my RX-7, but the RX-7 I had coilovers put in. And my M3 is on stock suspension.

Interior is okay, not exciting but does it's job well. I hate how the glove box never seems to close all the way... I think if anything, BMW needs to improve the built quality of the interior.

Overall it is a fun car to drive, just don't believe the hype, really test drive a few different M3's before buying. Get a taste for your self if this is the car for you. Don't expect the woorld from it and you will be pleasently suprised.
