Strength:

Layout, seat placement, trunk space, 60/40 split rear seat, drive.

Weakness:

Second row seats have to be removed to be reconfigured. I would have liked to just slide them across but this is in no way a deal breaker.

Wow. From someone who never wanted to drive a minivan. Prior auto was a BMW and second auto is an Explorer. This minivan drives like a Mercedes and has the room of a tour bus. With triplets and a teen we are finally comfortable. This model features seating for 7 with two baby seats in the second row and another in the back. Even without taking down the third seat, enough room for two strollers and all the groceries I can buy. Remarkable usage of space. The removable console between the two front seats allows us to walk from the front to the last row without exiting the vehicle.

Strength:

I do not know, I have never had any other issues with any of my Avalons or Camry I was hoping to say Toyota quality, but they are really ruining there reputation with these minivans

Weakness:

Toyotas ability to stand up to there product

I like the van, I have owned 4 toyotas in a row and gave up an Avalon for this van. I have had my brakes replaced twice and still have to put up with this squeal, plus the van attacts dirt because every 10,000 miles or so I get a shimmy (I have brand new Toyo 100,000 mile tires) when It happens I take into the dealer who always assures me that there is dirt caked up there and sure enough when he removes the tires there is, which is odd because I live on pavement and drive on payment, we always make a joke about my husband having a girl friend in the country. I also have another issue that I have never seen discussed before, My van makes this constant noise that every time someone new gets in it they always think that hear an ambulance, I mentioned this to the mechanic and he looked at me like I was an idiot, funny he is the ONLY person who does not hear this noise.

Strength:

3.3 Liter V6 engine - 230HP 60/40 third row bench seat that disappears into the floor - Honda has the same but their is not 60/40. Quiet, car-like ride especially at highway speeds. Some would say that Toyotas are not reliable but that just depends on the user. I've owned Toyotas before and they are the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned.

Weakness:

None to think of. However I just wish that Toyota had made the sliding doors as standard dual power sliding doors rather than an option. Plus it would be nice to have the lift-gate as powered too rather than an option.

Great minivan - our first and hopefully not the last! Handles like a car. Engine is strong with more than enough power for those uphills on the way to Vegas. We opted for the 8 seat version and so far it has been great for our family and a few others. The passenger slide sliding door is great too. I wish that Toyota had made both doors as standard power sliding doors but it's more a pet peeve than anything. The disappearing third row 60/40 bench seat is great too. We opted for the DVD entertainment system and I highly recommend it for families especially during longer trips. I have read about the sludge problems in older model Siennas and hopefully the problem has been fixed by Toyota. I'm not worried though as I am documenting each and every oil change done by the dealer so they cannot or rather they will have a hard time proving that I did not keep up with warranty oil changes. Plus I've got a secret weapon against "sludge". It's been proven product. Email me for details.

Strength:

Quiet drive other than the squeaky noise from the door panels.

Weakness:

Product is not reansonably durable.

1st summer, complained about A/C failed to cool the van. Dealer: non-CFC type A/C was not efficient. 2nd summer, A/C ceased to work completely. Dealer replaced leaky pipe under warranty. 3rd summer, A/C was totally dead again. Dealer charged me twice for diagnostic. Replaced pipe. 4th summer, on the 1st warm day - A/C was dead dead. Dealer: the A/C uses corrosive freon and it is possibly that I need to repair it every year. Toyota Canada: Warranty over. Nothing could be done. I asked, "Is the product you sold me reasonably durable?" Toyota Canada: "We didn't sell you the car."

Weakness:

Sludge problem that requires the engine to be rebuilt. Some people report this happening after only 11k miles.

Sienna Engine Sludge...BEWARE. A few days ago I noticed blueish smoke coming from the exhaust on startup. Took my 2002 Sienna (25k miles) to the dealer to have it checked out. Dealer tells me I have engine sludge and that the engine will have to be rebuilt. They accused me of not changing the oil often enough. I change it every 4k miles! Searched the web and found out this is very common with newer Siennas but Toyota is denying the problem. There is an article in USA Today about it also. Still Toyota denies it. Absolutely amazing! I have had numerous Toyotas and Hondas and put over 150k miles on all of them with never a problem. My advice is to avoid Siennas until Toyota confesses.

Good value for price; features; all rear seats easily removable

Weakness:

Brake noise.

The Toyota Sienna is generally a very solid car. After almost five years we have no major complaints. However, we have been constantly frustrated by rear brake noise and some rear door noise. We have paid (~$50) to have the brakes inspected on several occasions only to be told that they are within specification. We have concluded that the dealership and Toyota corporate know there is a problem but have decided to deny it.

Strength:

Good sturdy feel, Crisp accleration. Good sound even on the base CE model.

Weakness:

Squeaky brakes. Very Very annoying.

I bought the van in April 2003. I liked the van because it has a good sturdy feel to it on the highway. Clean crisp acceleration. I bought the CE model which is a little lean on the options compared to competitors. I don't mind the slightly smaller size because it is easier to park. Also the split seats in the back are great for versatility. However about 6 months after taking delivery I noticed a squealing sound in th erear brakes. I took it into a Hamilton Dealership for servicing and was told flat out that there was nothing wrong with the brakes since they still worked fine. I suppose a any kind of noise coming from the van is OK as long as it still works. Next I took it into the dealership where I bought the van and they tried to roughen the drums and or pads which worked for about three days. After two more visits with no results I called Toyota Canada and they told me that this was a warranty problem which would have a technical bulletin put out soon (whatever that means). They seemed concerend and arranged called the dealership who replace the brakes. This fix lasted for about three weeks. They now squeal again and evertime I stop I am reminded to never take Toyota quality for granted. The squealing is very annoying and is something I would associate with a old junk car not a brand new 21st century van. Overall a fairly good van but I am dissapointed with the engineering. The faulty brakes make me wonder what other engineering gremlins lurk in the van.

For the same amount of money you can get more features than on Odyssey.

Weakness:

Service is awful, complete disaster. Toyota Canada provides no help in resolving problems with dealership.

I bought it brand new 2 years ago and was very happy with it at first. Last December (2002) service people at Richmond Hill Toyota told me that my van needed alignment. It was my mistake that I allowed them to do it. Since then my van pulls to the right. Today they are trying to fix it for the second time. The foreman told me, that Toyota Sienna is known to have problems with alignment! That was $92.00 down the drain. They broke my van for my money. Another problem I am having is that rear vent windows started to rattle when opened. They replaced a motor on one of them, now there is the same problem with the other one. Again, I was told by foreman that this is how these windows are supposed to be. Brillian design Toyota!

Strength:

Powerful engine. Has good pick-up. Nice interior. Easy to remove bucket seats. Climate control in back for passengers.

Weakness:

Braking system-Mechanical defect. Brakes squeal loudly when applied and car staggers to a stop. Feels as though you are shifting gears but is brakes jumping as they are applied. Company has not come forward with recall-yet.Passenger van doors locks stick frequently. Dangerous as passengers in back must come to front of vehicle to exit. Squeaky driver door window that feels as though it was not installed properly.

Bought new car 18 months ago and have problems with rear brakes from Day one. Squealing sound and staggering movement when braking. According to dealership is inherent problem with this model. Somehow connected to the emergency brake. Have had van in three times to fix brakes. Last time they were replaced. Is only temporary fix. Have been waiting since August of 2002 for recall to come out from Toyota Canada. Still waiting. Dealership refuses to give date as there has been no indication from head office when and if recall will appear.
