Strength:

Nice interior, handles well, roomy.

Weakness:

AT 3800 miles, the engine threw a rod. The van has been at the dealer since July 17, 2000 (today is Sept. 21, 2000) and still not repaired. Lord help you if you have to deal with their 1-800 number. Most of them may ge geat vans, but if you get the one that isn't, forget it!!

I am so disappointed in Toyota's service and reaction to this whole episode that I would NEVER recommend Toyota to anyone!

Strength:

The overall looks, fit and finish and Toyota's reputation of quality.

Weakness:

Large turning radius, major blind spots because of the thick B pillars, Cheap Firstone tires on them which I have changed to Michlin for peace of mind

I've been lucky with my van because it does not have some common complaints from other discussion groups such as: not tracking straight, problem with the torque converter that causes the check engine light to come on and general squeaks and noise from door, dash, and seats. However, I do have a problem with an oil leak coming from the sensor on the front upper right of the engine. This problem has been reported on other groups. It's not a big deal and I assume Toyota will fix it under warranty. Overall (knock wood) my van has been pretty good.

Vibrations - this van has vibrated at every speed since the day I bought it! I have had to replace the tires three times at 30,000 miles, sliding door "stickiness" with the actual door and they locks

I would not recommend this van to anyone! I have wasting more time at the dealership than I can count! The dealership is just trying to wear me down with hopes that I go away. At 19,000 miles they replaced the front brakes because they said that this was causing the constant vibration, that didn't help so they told me to replace the tires, this didn't help so they told me the tires were defective I replaced those after 10,000 miles and now I have a third set of "defective" tires. I have always used the standard dunlop tires that came with the van. I have now been told by the dealership that they have had no other reports of such with any other Sienna but I know that this is not true because I have found others. I am getting a list to take back to Toyota now. Please notify me if you have had similar problems. I have also had the sliding doors repaired countless times for the locks sticking and the actual door sticking. This van has not stood up to they Toyota name and quality that I have known for the past 20 years. I will never buy another Toyota!

Strength:

Very comfortable, very easy to manouver, very very quiet, like driving a luxury car. Also my wife and I find driving this van on long trips we don't get tired like we do in other vehicles.

Weakness:

Drivers side 2nd row captains seat same as passenger side so to move it from outside you have to lean across it to reach lever, also cup holder is inbetween door and seat on that side and is a little awkward to use.

This is my 5th Toyota product and think they make great vehicles. The only reason I could see not to buy the Sienna would be if you needed a bigger van. Otherwise this van is fantastic, everytime I drive it I am so happy we got it. Also for anybody on Vancouver Island the Duncan dealership was good and our salesman Chris Powers was very good to work with.

Tested the Honda, looked at a Windstar, and had a 97 Mazda MPV for 2 years. If the Honda was as quiet and handled as well as the Sienna I would have waited for one.

Strength:

#1 - SAFETY!!! My family's safety is my paramount concern. This van had the best overall rating in NTHSA reviews.
#2 - Value. Superior comfort, features and reliability
#3 - Quiet. Much better than Ford Windstar
#4 - Ride. A little soft, but still MUCH better than Ford Windstar
#5 - Reliability. MUCH, MUCH better than Ford Windstar

Weakness:

1. Combination front and rear wiper switch is awkward to use. I still have trouble getting the right combination/action.
2. I'd like to see ALL (including those on the steering wheel)controls illuminated for use at night.

Paid under $20K. We love this minivan and would recommend it HIGHLY!!!

Similar Products Used:

1995 Ford Windstar XLE - this was a piece of CRAP!!! We paid over $27K for it and had problems from the first week! The Ford was falling apart after 5 years! Had the "standard" problems with the head gasket, transmission, etc. For those who like luxury, the Ford had nice leather and power seats - but what good are these if it doesn't run?
The Toyota COST LESS, RUNS BETTER, IS QUIETER, RIDES NICER and is DEPENDABLE!!!

Strength:

The kids loved the captain's chairs. The third row is easily accessible and comfortable for children. All seats had head rests--a good safety feature. The rear of the van has good storage space, especially with the seats "tumbled." I like that the rear seats fold down independently. Kids liked the a/c vents in the back seats.

Weakness:

Terrible turning radius and bad hydroplaning problems. The handling was so poor that we sold it after one year in favor of a Ford Expedition. The front seats are on the small side for large (or even medium) adults. The paint chipped easily. Within a few months, the van was full of "dings." The cup holders are inconveniently placed--impossible for a child in a car seat to reach. Acceleration was only ok--nothing special.

Although I liked the van fine, my husband hated everything about it. Too small, poor handling, squishy seats. It also knicked and "dinged" very easily. As vans go, I am sure this is one of the good ones, but we just decided that we are not "van people" after all. We will stick with SUVs, at least until the handling improves.

Similar Products Used:

We have not had any other vans but have found that the handling on this vehicle was much poorer than on the Ford Explorer and Mercedes SUV that we have had. Also much worse than the Expedition that we just bought.

Strength:

The Sienna is very quite and smooth. Driving in the city or freeway this Van handles exceptionally well. The Air Conditoner is very cold so says, my daughter who sits in the middle. Thats a good sign!!! Very roomy for the ones who sit in the Captain chairs. The V6 194hp!!!

Weakness:

The rearview mirror seems to small looking back to even a smaller rear window it seems. The front dash console seems abit high although I'm a 5'8"
person. The side cup holders don't seem to be durable. They always break
if you hit them once if its left in the down position. The stero system is ok if, you direct the sound to the front. Then my kids say, I can't hear it Daddy!! I still get mixed up with the front and back wipers. The rear cargo space could be about a foot longer. The seats are thin...I know it saves in weight to gas mileage but, please its like sitting in patio chair!!!

The price paid $26,000 is well worth it. Its nice to know so far that we won't be nickeled and dimed like the Windstar. We haven't experienced any noises with the interior. We like our manual sliding doors....one less power working device to worry about and one less visit to the Dealer!! I totally recommend this van!!!

Similar Products Used:

Dodge Van and Ford Windstar. The Ford Windstar of course is a bigger van and bigger engine but, that van was breaking down everywhere. These two vans don't even come close. The Dodge Van was more dependable than the Ford.

Had the van for 6 months now. Overall quite happy, some minor rattle from dash as others have said, and CD skipped, but dealer was happy to replace right away. Very comfortable and smoothest ride I have ever had in car or vans I have owned.

It has been a complete nightmare. Maybe I expect too much.
1. I had terrible problem with the break system. The break sounds so loud and bad to the point that I was afraid to drive around. When I brought it to the dealer, they fixed seemingly without any hassle. They replace the whole break system. But two days later the rotor housing feel off in the middle of the road and hitting against the rim inside and stopped completely on the way to sea world. The car was towed back to the dealer again( My mistake, I should have never gone back to the same dealer). It happened right after I got off of interstate 5. I don’t want to think about what would happen to my family if the rotor housing fell when I was doing 65. (I have them replace the alloy wheel later, because it was badly scratched)
2. The sliding door is still getting jammed even after three attempts by two different dealers. When I was closing the sliding door, I heard something colliding and the door sprung back. The button on the inside of door handle got stuck and did not pop out. The noise was from the locking mechanism on the door and U shaped lock on the body colliding. I had to play with the locking mechanism and got it working again, but few days later both doors would not open inside or outside and brought back to the dealer. They replaced whole locking assembly and various cables, but after three months some thing happen again to the driver side sliding door.
3. The sliding door makes a real bad squeaking noise. I had six visits to two different and once the problem seemed to be resolved, but in two to three weeks it squeaked again. Glad that my wife drives this thing.
4. The Instrument panel and dashboard assembly make the same squeaking noise at high speed (A great squeaking machine, at low speed from the sliding door and at high speed from all over the dash board). I usually sit right behind my wife away from the dashboard or from the right sliding door.
I owned a Nissan and even droved few Toyotas. I never dream of getting into this kind of mass before I bought this thing. So glad that I can at least blame my wife because this was her dream car.

Strength:

Gotta love that new car smell. Besides that, well there's still a lot more to like. It's got great acceleration and power and a great solid feel to it. Of course all new cars feel this way for the first few months. We'll have to see how well it does in a year or so. But having had one Toyota before the Acuras and Nissans, I know that this car will not only hold its value but that it will last quite a while. We bought the CE because it was cheaper and because we actually wanted the bench seats. Since we have a 2 year old we wanted to have her in the center of the car instead of the sides where the captain's seats would be. It's a fun car to drive. In fact my wife refuses to drive in her old Acura (even after swearing that she didn't want to become a "minivan mommmy") because of the great feel and drive. If I could, I'd take this van over the sporty little Acura any day. Never mind the fact that women never look at men in minivans. Give me the comfort.

Weakness:

It's small. I say that because our last van was Grand Caravan and it had about a foot more trunk space. Also the Caravan was a bit wider which was nice when my daughter and I would wait for mom to come out of the store. We could go back and forth between the middle and back seats to just good around. You can forget about that in the Sienna.
The back seats are definitely not for adults. I'm 6'0 and when I sit back there I keep hitting my head on the roof. I have to scrunch down till my knees are hitting the back of the middle seat to have any decent head clearance. Also the lack of any movement of the back seats and middle bench are a pain in the tush. The Caravan had back seats on tracks that could be moved all the way to till it hit the middle bench giving you about 4 feet of empty space. You can't do that with the Sienna. The tumble feature is helpful but not what the Caravan is. Also the nonmoving middle bench is a hassle since adults who sit there are unable to stretch out their legs by moving the seats back. I've heard a lot of stories about service centers, both good and bad--since I haven't had to deal with them yet, hope I'm one of the "good" stories.

Paid $26,700. After 3 hours with a car salesman I would have paid twice that just to get out of there. I think it's a reasonable price but I just hate going to car dealers. My next car's going to be a Saturn with their no haggle policy.

Grand Caravan: not even a close second. The caravan was breaking down on us almost once a month for major repairs at 78,000 miles. We had to get new headgaskets and a new transmission in the same month. Sure it's not nicer gimmicks and it's more spacious, but I had to let my wife borrow the cell phone everytime she went on any errand because we were afraid that she'd be stranded somewhere.
