Strength:

Roomy, rides like a car, good acceleration, but then compared to the four cylinders we've been driving it is not a surprise.

Weakness:

The factory delivered tires wore out much sooner than I would have suspected. Replaced the Dunlops with Michelins. Dealership tried to blame it on lack of tire rotation and/or not keeping the correct pressure. As with other posters to this list the tire pressure warning light kept coming on even when the pressure checked out ok. VERY nerve-racking when you are driving in Northern Canada! Dealership was very cavalier about those concerns. Initially replaced the tires with Pirellis but the vehicle pulled badly to the left. Finally went with the Michelins. The warning light has come on less frequently but recently had that same experience again.

The oil sludge has me very concerned. Just been told that I need to replace the oil pressure sending unit ($155.00, no warranty coverage). I noticed an oil puddle in the driveway. Decided that an oil change a little early never hurts anything and took it in to the dealership. I get all oil changes there because of a deal when I bought the vehicle. The leak was diagnosed as "loose" oil pan bolts. Yeah right! Yesterday I stood there and watched the oil drip out from under the van. Today its the oil pressure sending unit. Related to the sludge problem that so many others are writing about?? I don't know but I will be watching for this now.

Sliding doors freeze easily in cold weather.
Inside trim has needed some repair.
Removable rear seats are too heavy.

VERY disappointed with Toyota's warranty. Other vehicles have a 10yr/100K full coverage warranty. With Toyota's boastful quality you would think they would stand behind their product with better warranties. I will be looking elsewhere for my next vehicle. I also agree with one other poster, the Toyota dealership is not one that I would recommend. The Sienna is overpriced, but only I'm the fool for having spent the money.

Strength:

Multi-cupholders/organizers; smooth ride (at first);

Weakness:

sticky passenger door latch; soft, easily dented back bumper especially corner; recently engine warning light came on - fuel injector problem;

Guess this is another American-made
- saw all kinds of reports about engine sludge, was concerned when engine warning light came on at 33,702 mi., turned out to be fuel injector that Toyota is aware of but did not really announced as part of recall.
- Hope Toyota all these problems/weaknesses as didn't see much reported for 2000 or 2001 models. Went for the product because of the name.
- Should not cost this high for so much problem so soon.

Strength:

Quiet, powerful engine
Smooth car-like ride
Safest van on the market
GREAT DEALERSHIP!

Weakness:

I'll let you know if I find one!

I owned a Camry prior to this and the Sienna drives exactly like it. It is smooth, quiet, and responsive. I hated the thought of owning a minivan until I looked at this. Maplewood Toyota treated me like a king from the first moment I walked in. My salesman Ross was wonderful! He broke the mold of what a car salesman is. I would recomend this vehicle and dealership to anyone. I discussed the sludge problem with the service manager-Russ and the owner-Steve and they both assured me it wasn't an issue. After looking at it more indepth, one of the reviewers mentioned they used 10W30. The Sienna uses 5W30. All Toyotas have a double overhead cam and needs 5, not 10W30. This may be part of the problem.

Anyone who wants a great van at a great value, go to Maplewood Toyota, work with Ross and you won't regret it

Nothing yet, I hope

This Sienna is the best vehicle I have driven in. It's very quiet, easy to drive, and it's not to big or small to drive. Everywhere we go, there is someone eying the van, checking out how good it looks While you drive, you can get your kids to watch videos on the TV like screen. It's great!!

Great van buy yourself one. Save youself alot of money and hassle, buy via the Web. Don't try to deal with Roswell Toyota directly, real pain. Only purchased there because they had the color my wife wanted. Toyota are great products, my 94 4runner 4x4 has 127,000 miles, just like new.

Strength:

Privacy glass is nice, great A/C, limited drag with A/C on, all the creature comforts.

Weakness:

Think goodness I found this website. What kind of vehicle breaks down oil into a puddle of sludge after only 21000 miles.

I change the oil every 3000 miles(sometimes earlier), I use Valvoline 10W-30, have for 10 years, never had this problem, and yet every time I release the drain plug to drain the oil, its not oil coming out, its more like a gel. The dealer says its inferior oil and after reading some of these reviews I'm realizing I'm not the only person with these problems. I'm no mechanic but I do know that foamy or sludgy oil is from coolant mixing with the oil from a head gasket failure but I have NO coolant loss. I'm at a complete loss as to what to do. Toyota denies there is a problem. I've already paid it off so I guess I'm stuck with it. Because of this problem, I've got serious reservations to future reliability and even now I never know if I'm going to get to where I'm going without the engine seizing up from lack of protection. On another note, my neighbor is having some electric door problems and transmission problems with his Honda Oddysey. What's up with Japanese products all of a sudden?I may go back to a Dodge Caravan really soon! I'm giving two stars instead of one because so far I haven't been left stranded. The wife loves the look of the new Chrysler T&C LXI.

Strength:

Excellent highway "cruiser". 20,000 near-flawless miles. Absolutely one refined vehicle. Third Toyota purchased from Cobb Co. Toyota with to date; total satisfaction. My wife drives the van daily. She also has their service dept. perform all periodic maintenance. This eliminates warranty debate though thats never been an issue. So far; all the vans components work as expected and we are very pleased.

Weakness:

Too sensitive keyless power door button. Rattling in pocket opens and closes the door. Paint does seem to be a little fragile.

If the shade tree mechanics want to perform their own maintenance, fine but after the factory warranty is over. I would suggest to the poor folks with a sludging problem take out some major city newspaper auto want ads seeking others with the same problem. Instigate a recall or a class action lawsuit. Volunteer a feedback report to Consumers Report. Call in to one of the many Saturday morning automobile talk shows. If you think you have a real beef, and I myself after reading these reviews think it highly possible, you can get the word out.

comfortable ride, drives like car, roomy

Weakness:

I too, (like so many others) have experienced the sludging problem at 17,000 miles. The dealer will not cover this under warranty. I also have a serious pulling problem, and two dealers did not do rotations as I asked. Now factory is offering me new tires, since at 17,000 miles they are somehow shot. I urge anyone with the engine problem to contact me.

I would not recommend the Sienna until these problems are fixed. In general I like the toyota product. My husband is currently in the market for a tundra.

Everything breaks. This car is a piece of trash. 2 CD players, 2 Stereos, 2 broken door hinges, broken rear door latch, broken release on rear seat, trim falling off, noisy brakes, loose steering wheel (dealer tried to fix 6 times - shall I go on?

Total frustration. I wouldn't recommend this Flinstone mobile to anyone. If you must buy one - get an extended warranty. This car is worse than the junkiest Chrysler or Ford.

Strength:

I don't care about the strenths right now.

Weakness:

Began blowing white smoke after 19000 miles. Have had 3 oil changes, with manual suggesting every 5000 miles. Have receipts, but when I went into dealership to discuss problem, was told I have a sludge build up due to lack of maintanance. I told them about the 3 oil changes, and was told "The receipts mean nothing to me". Was told it must have been "inferior oil" (company uses Penzoil and Quaker State). They want $2200 to rebuild the motor, and say it is NOT under their warranty. 1-800 number for customer relations in California gives you standard company dialogue supporting their dealership, and told me if I find an independent mechanic who states it is not the result of lack of maintanance, I will then have ground to SUE Toyota to get my car fixed. WHAT WARRANTY?

I recommnd staying away from this vehicle until Toyota fixes the problem, whcih apparently dates back to 1998.
