Strength:

Comfortable ride. Seats are solid and comfy.

Weakness:

Sludge issue occurred after approximately 30,000 miles. Toyota will not cover with warranty (due to lack of maintenance - even though I have the receipts from the oil changes). Went to arbitration with no luck. Is anyone else out there thinking class action?

We have been treated rudely by Toyota. Toyota know that if they were to fix just one of the vehicles under the warranty, they would be creating an opening for the rest of us to get ours fixed. Let's not give up!

Have had a Ford Aerostar and a Plymouth Voyager. Neither of them had a major problem like the sludge issue. This was my first (and last) Toyota product.

Strength:

Very comfortable seats (best I've ever had), handling is solid, good power, reasonable standard options, fold up seats in rear very handy, good car-like feel.

Weakness:

Some uneven tire wear, rattles I cannot find, concern about engine sludge issue, poor rear view, rear seat belts lock up too easily

Upon selling our Voyager we had for 3 years, the Sienna is a joy to ride in. We went 350 miles on our first 500 mile trip and then discovered lack of fatigue from the standard seats; no back ache/discomfort, etc. such as we experienced in the Voyager. Installed a plastic fresnel lens on the inside of the back window to help with the visablity problem and it works quite well to see objects close to the van when backing up. Biggest concern is about the sludge issue reported as voiding warranties and Toyota's reported response. I don't see this problem on my van, but am very sensitive to it and getting oil changes done ONLY at the dealer and being diligent to change within 4000 miles. A friends 1999 LE has 43000 on it and I am watching his experiences which so far are excellent. The rear seat belts look up too quickly, so moving around in the seat may require taking off the belt and rebuckling it to release the lock. So far so good at 10,000 miles; this has been a good experience.

Strength:

Comfortable ride, good leg room for our tall teenagers due to adjustable seats.

Weakness:

We had the tire problem early on, but the BIG problem is the oil sludge, which hit us at 31,000 miles. We did do oil changes, more frequently than the owner's manual and maintenance guide recommend, and we gave Toyota copies of the receipts. As appears to be Toyota's standard approach, they insisted that the sludge still is our fault somehow and will not cover under warranty. The engine damage is in the thousands of dollars. Also, the engine light and oil light never came on; we discovered the problem only because we noticed that the exhaust seemed "dirty"--and the first time we took it in, the dealership service people told us nothing was wrong! (We are not giving in on the warranty issue! There clearly is something wrong with the engine. Our independent mechanic told us that it looks like an engine that has never had an oil change--and it certainly did have oil changes, one of them just 1,000 miles before we noticed the problem!)

The tire problem at the beginning and the HUGE oil sludge problem now have made this an entirely horrible experience. Also, it is always difficult to get service from the dealership. You have to have an appointment, and you have to wait several day for an appointment, even in an emergency situation. Their attitude is rude. No more Toyotas for us! Some of them may be good, but we wouldn't take a chance, and we would not deal with those people!

Mercury Villager. Loved the Villager and had no problems with it. Went to the Sienna because the Villager did not give us enough leg room for kids when they got tall. The Sienna is awful compared to the Villager except on the leg room issue--not enough to make up for the rest of the problems!

Strength:

Quiet, Smooth ride, Quality, Quality, Quality, Smooth Power

Weakness:

Did not care for the power sliding door until it was opened accidentally from inside the house during a thunderstorm, now I hate the stupid gadget. The left side manual door opens with the slightest effort, it takes more effort to push the power button on the stupid powered door.

Best van for me. I love the styling, has the most comfortable seats, great power and dependability. I keep my cars 200k miles or more and considering the record of the Camry's drivetrain, I feel confident that I will be happy for a long time. But I still hate that stupid power door!

Chrysler vans are nicer, roomier, but everyone that I know of that has had one was sorry after 50K miles.

Strength:

Smooth, very quiet, comfortable leather seats, fantastic sounding stereo system(JBL),quality-quality-quality all around, fit and finish is superb, great auto-temp A/C-HTR system for both front and rear. What a great vehicle to own and drive, more solid feel on the road than the 2000 XLE traded. Oh, how I love our Toyota Sienna!!!!

Weakness:

None other than it came in with Firestone Affinity tires.

Traded our 2000 XLE,never had a single problem in 16k miles of driving, just liked the latest "bells & whistles" offered on the 2001 model which wasn't available on the 2000. Order placed with Kolosso Toyota, Appleton WI on April 9th and took delivery April 26th as ordered. Very professional Sales person, (Kyle)handled the transaction and delivery. From the moment I started the engine on our new XLE I could feel and hear the smoothness of 3.0-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 with VVT-i 210 hp engine. As I engaged the 4-speed electronically controlled automatic OD transmission you could feel the smoothness of the engine-transmission combination as the transmission shifted through the gears. What a quiet luxury car feeling I experienced when I drove home from the dealership. I thought our 2000 XLE was great, but this year's model is even better! When I turned on the JBL Stereo Radio it produced a sound that I experienced with my home system...GREAT SOUNDING! Everything operates so smoothly on this vehicle, the power sun roof, the dual power rear doors and the opening and closing of all the doors, it's solid and the fit and finish is like our Audi (1990). This is truly a fine driving and operating automobile. It may not be the largest mini van, but it is, in my opinion, THE BEST! If you are in the market for a van of this size that meets your needs, do yourself a favor..buy a Sienna! Have your vehicle serviced on schedule, something we overlook since self-serve gas stations came about, and by all means have your oil and filter changed every three months or 3k miles using a quality 5w30 wt oil. Can't believe how many owners drive 10-15k miles and never look at their oil and then complain when the engine goes sour. Spending $20 every three months is cheap as compared to replacing an engine at today's price. This is our fifth Toyota automobile purchase, all have been pleasant experiences with "NO" vehicle or service problems with any of them. We are extremely pleased with the Toyota product and service from the Toyota Dealership (Kolosso Toyota-Appleton, WI)

Strength:

Well thought-out interior. Stylish Exterior.

Weakness:

Major: Van pulls to left. Suspension is mush, esp. with full load. Rear bottoms out over hard bumps. Dangerous swaying has developed and it feels like a quick manuever to avoid a road hazard will result in loss of control. This is exacerbated with full compliment of passengers. Minor: Stereo amp and 2 speakers burned up, Sliding doors stick, digital clock went out, brake lights burned out 3 times in first year. Electrical system is suspect.

Noticeable decline in quality of Toyotas and Hondas over the past 10 years. I attribute this to "made in america" status. The hondas I bought previously from Japan were T-I-G-H-T! Not today. I am very worried about the swaying and pulling to the left of this van. I am concerned for the safety of my wife and 3 year old daughter, and the van is going in this week to have these checked. Overall, I am dissapointed in this vehicle. I purchased a Toyota so that it would last 10 years. I am now faced with getting rid of it if these safety issues are not addressed by the dealer. I have seen multiple cases of the same problems listed here by other owners, so I am now sure these are inherent defects, and not isolated problems.

Oil disappearing, the Firestone tires that came with the vehicle were not worth the money-tire shredded after 17,000 miles. Problems with the automatic sliding door.

This was our first Toyota purchase and will be our last. We have a 1997 Ford Explorer and I was expecting the ford to give me problems before the van.....boy was I wrong. Our first experience was when the tire shredded during one of our trips to Austin. Needless to say it was a scary experience especially when you have all your kids in the car. Then 7 days after our last oil change smoke was coming out of the tail pipe!! After having it looked at the guy said that we were 3 quarts low!!! He suggested to take it back to the dealership since it was under 20,000 miles and less than a year old. The dealership and Toyota headquarters have not been helpful. They said there was sludge in the engine and warranty was not going to cover it!! We got the van back and have kept a close eye on the oil level and we are still coming up on the low end!!! We have had regular oil changes and we are being punished for it!! I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone!!! After further investigation on the internet I have found forums and message boards boasting about similar problems.

Strength:

It was great for about the first 10,000 miles.

Weakness:

After maybe 30,000 miles my Sienna developed all kinds of problems. Slow acceleration, brake problems, drifting on the highway, tire pressure warning light won't shut off, sliding door gets stuck, etc.

I had a Previa for three years and never had any problems with it, so I think the Toyota vans in general are still pretty good. I'd either wait and see if the new models are more reliable, or go with the Odyssey if you dont' mind the price.
