Pontiac Montana Extended Van
Strength:
It's sporty, very roomy, not TOO bad on the MPG's.
Weakness:
Tranny & rims are absolutely horrible. Electrical system not too hot either. I bought this van used. Now I see why someone traded it in. Van is nice to look at, but horrible to drive. Tires were replaced @ 30k miles due to cupping & vibrations. Tire store said it was the GenSeal tires making the van vibrate at highway speeds. Tires made it about 1000 or so miles before it happened again. I'm sure it's the rims that are probably bent or warped(I would warp too holding up this heavy van) Left rear tail light fills with water when it rains(I've seen more than one Montana with the same problem) & blows the actual light bulbs. The air bag light comes on when it feels like it. The cruise control comes & goes as it pleases. The passenger power window stops working periodically, then comes back to life. Transmission whines after being driven for more than an hour which leads me to believe I'll be in a transmission shop soon. The alternator was replaced @ 33k miles. As of today(06/22/03) the tires have around 30k miles on them & it shakes your spleen out at highway speeds. I really expected more from this Pontiac. I've owned two Grand Prix' in the past & loved them. I can honestly say I'll never purchase another Montana as long as I live. Similar Products Used: 1999 Mercury Villager |

Strength:
Nice Interior features.
Weakness:
Engine,Transmission horrible. The biggest ripoff ever. Had to have Oil Manifold replaced.Even as I write this my wife is taking the vehicle to get transmission worked on. This was costly to purchase and even more costly to own.I will never purchase another GM Vehicle. Complete ripoff, poor engineering. Now my family and I are stuck with an expensive piece of junk and can not afford alternative transportation. Thanks GM!! |

Strength:
Comfortable, easy to drive and very adaptable. Nice shape with black glass etc. Unusual in the UK.
Weakness:
Front wheel bearings and disc pads wear quickly. Hand brake/rear drums poor. Original soundsystem Delco changed for Clarion CD system, much better. Bought used with 65,000 miles. Alternator broke within 2 months but fixed under dealer warranty. Heater matrix leaked as soon as winter arrived and fixed under warranty. 6 months of ownership and front wheel bearings both gone? Very expensive to replace as new hub assembly must be purchased at $250.00 each, + labour. Vehicle as only done 68.000 miles. Seems a weak spot in design. Air conditioning serviced and R12 replacement refrigerant put in ( RS24 ) and works realy well. ( I am a vehicle air con engineer). Rear wiper has never worked but I can live with that. No high vis rear fog lights! maybe they have been removed for indicators lights for UK spec. Can,t find anyone to test front wheel tracking. |

Strength:
The sound system is good
Weakness:
Everything but the Radio Please don't buy this vehicle. We have had nothing but problems. On the test drive the low coolant light was on. They said it just had a loose hose. Oil leaked after 3 months. Uses front brake pads every 17,000 miles. Intake manifold replaced once and now needs replaced again $850. Biggest Vehicle mistake I have ever made. Will never buy another GM product. I tried to support American made products while all my workmates buy Toyota, Honda, and Mitsubishi. They never have the issues I have had. I am going to have to trade it in. I feel sorry for the poor sucker that buys this vehicle ( I know how it feels). |

Pontiac Montana
Strength:
Comfortable seats, spacious, good gas mileage that's why we purchased the Montana
Weakness:
Poor quality, too much road noise...no insulation between carpet and floor...exterior panels rattle... Take it from me....stay away from the Pontiac Montana. We purchaed our Montana because it had a CD player, 2nd row captains chairs and it seemed like a good vehicle. We were wrong. All the exterior trim had to be fixed because everything rattled....the fuel gauge broke when the van was just over 1 year old....right now our power door locks don't work and there is a wheel bearing gone...makes it sound like there is an airplane flying overhead. Today 4 of us piled into our 1/2 ton truck to drive 45 miles because we couldn't stand the noise from the wheel bearing. Our lease is up in August..thank goodness but we plan to pay our last two lease payments and get rid of this piece of junk as soon as we find another vehicle! DON"T BUY A MONTANA!!!!! Similar Products Used: Had a Nissan Quest for 7 years ...it was too small so we purchased the larger Montana.....NEVER had problems with the Quest...much better quality throughout |

Strength:
Pontiac comfort, handles nice with factory tires removed.Replaced Generals with BF Goodrich.
Weakness:
Delphi electronics seem to be cheap.(engine sensors). Poor rear brakes.Poor wiper system.(engine transmission and cam replaced, not covered by warranty).Air bag in steering wheel replaced.Transmission clunks.Dealer replaced windshield at time of purchase, returned van three times, still leaks at top drivers corner.Drivers sliding door sticks, even after proper cleaning and lubrication. Now A/C has failed(just in time for summer). The van has that nice Pontiac comfort. But not the reliability of the old days.Purchased van with 42 000 km now has 70 000 km alot of problems for 28 000 km of gentle use. Even a Lada would last if it was babied.I understand a person takes a chance in buying used. That,s why we went to a dealer to hopefully avoid some headaches.(NOT).Lease or buy new.I do not recomend a used North American vehicle Similar Products Used: Dodge Caravan,Mazda Mpv |

Strength:
this van is very great in some ways and is very nice. It is not like a boring minivan. it is also sporty, fast, easy removable seats, spacious, cheap, attractive
Weakness:
this van has had a number of problems. the 2nd and 3rd row seats are to low making long trips uncomfortable, it drifts occasionally, cheap accessories etc., almost useless cup holders, uncomfrtable seats, uncomfortable head rests and thats it great van many pros and cons. Similar Products Used: 1990 plymouth- nice for its time Windstar-tingy |

Strength:
Removable seats are lightweight, accelerates well, good gas mileage. Love the exterior, has quite a few parts "resembleing" that off of a Grand Prix.
Weakness:
Cupholder on the front passengers side is awful, too bad these vans didn't come with a center console. I bought this 97 Montana with 115,00 miles on it. Completely loaded except sunroof and leather. So far I have had no problems and actually enjoy it so much the van got the garage and the suv sits outside. Similar Products Used: Tried out Chrysler, Ford and Mercury vans. I liked the way the Pontiac drove and looked over the others, parts are easy to come by and don't cost a fortune. |

Strength:
engine is peppy - seats are easy to remove - sound system is good - good fuel mileage - sporty looks
Weakness:
Rear brakes do make noise - thought they were going out and found out they were just dirty - cup holders need to be stronger and deeper, spilled several drinks - wish rear a/c was available on short models Being a 29-year old I thought I was too young to own a van but found myself constantly needing to haul things that wouldn't fit in a car, but I didn't want to "pay at the pump" like my mom does with her Lincoln Navigator. After driving the Montana I couldn't believe how much I liked it! I am very pleased with my purchase and will probably replace it with another Montana when it "dies" Similar Products Used: none, first van - I did do an extended test drive for two weeks in a Windstar before purchasing the Montana....never have missed the Windstar! |

Strength:
Peppy, roomy, actually fun to drive!
Weakness:
Some of the interior plastic could be less cheap-looking and -feeling. For someone who used to say "I wouldn't be caught DEAD in a minivan!", the Montana was a big surprise! Acceleration is spirited, if not sports-car like, and handling, at least with the Sport Handling Package, is firm and comfortable. Interior is as spacious as someone with 3 kids and their gear could hope for. So far (23,000miles), we've not had a single problem with our Montana. I love it! Similar Products Used: None! This is my first, but no doubt not my last, mini-van (as long as they keep building Montanas like this!) |
