Strength:
The fold down and hide away rear seat is terrific and was one of the selling features for me. Besides the MPV only Honda has this feature Who needs the hassle of taking a rear seatout and putting it back in whenever you need extra space. Rear windows roll down, which is really nice. The van is well put together, good materials. Very reliable. Who needs repair bills or the hassles of taking your vehicle to the shop.
Weakness:
The seats are a bit more firm than I would like, especially on a long trip. Radio volume knob can get hidden behind large drinks in cupholder. Big yellow and red warning labels printed on visors. No rear hatch unlock/pop-open button. I love this minivan. Not only has Mazda made one of the most physically attractive vans on the market but one of the most reliable as well. This van runs like a dream, quiet and with adequate power. Some have said the MPV 2000 mode's 2.5 litre engine is underpowered but I do not find this to be true. It has plenty of get up and go and it is more than adequate as far as I am concerned. Everyone has commented on how nice looking it is. In my opinion only the Honda Odyssey looks better, but the MPV makesup for that in price and availability. And not one ( I mean none) whiff of sulpher smell like one reviewer said. MPV LX
Strength:
slick van. windows go down. magic 3rd row. nice sun roof.
Weakness:
front cloth seats are hard as a rock....i'm not sure if they are any different in the back since I don't ride back there. I really wish it had that 7th 3pt seatbelt. visual profile from the back needs work. makes the van look tiny (even if it really is compared to honda). where's the coin holder? i guess it's the space adjacent to the 2-cup holder in the front. it should be where the power sliding door buttons go (that's if you didn't get the ES) missing left foot rest for the driver...without it, your carpet will probably have a hole in it in a couple of years. is there an accessory? $4000 off MSRP LX with 4 seasons, luxury, security, sun roof. I've had it 1 week. No smell yet. I like it. Did not buy the 6/100 warranty. Does anyone recommend this @$1597-300disc? I did pay for the security code etching on windows activation which cost $130 (reg. $399). Was this a good deal and is it worth having? I hadn't heard about it until the finance guy told me. It seemed like a minor expense at a good price. 2002 Odyssey EX could have been had for $500 off MSRP, but I think the MPV is a better value for the money. I just hope this van will match the quality and longevity of Honda. don't forget to get the 4seasons pkg...if you don't you can't control the temp in the back. Mazda MPV 4wd
Strength:
Great beach vehicle, good a/c, very durable materials inside and out, nice 4wd system, driving position.
Weakness:
Bad tranny, needs more power or a manual tranny. Smalish cargo area with the 3rd seat up. HI. My father bought the MPV for my mom ten years ago... now, with 120,000 in it, it's mine and I love it!!! I'm in college and it is certainly a better roadtrip car than my old Chevy Cavalier (rest in peace). It's the pefect beach vehicle and it handles very well even in 2wd. But, I'm really worried. This van has a terrible tranny (I wish it was manual). The dealer replace it once (they said that, I dont think so)and then my dad has to pay 1,000 to rebuild it. A year ago (96,000 aprox.) it went down again but the mecanic repalce it with a Pathfinder's automatic. So, now I'm holding the bill and if it broke again...... It's there anything that I can do to prevent this early faliures of the tranny. I've heard that it's caused by overheating, it's that true??? GREAT STYLING. GOOD VALUE
Weakness:
THE 4 SPEED TRANSMISSION IS A BIT QUIRKY. GEAR HUNTING AND HARSH SHIFTING WHEN COLD. THE ENGINE HAS ADEQUATE POWER (MORE WITH K&N FILTER). GEARSHIFT IN WAY OF RADIO CONTROLS. I HAVE HAD THE 2000 MPV FOR MORE THAN 2 YEARS. PREVIOUS TO THAT I HAD A 1990 MPV. MAZDA HAS DONE AN EXCEPTIONAL JOB WITH THE EXTERIOR STYLING. THE RIDE IS FIRM AND THE HANDLING IS AGGRESSIVE. IT CERTAINLY HANDLES MORE LIKE A CAR THEN A VAN. I RECENTLY INSTALLED A HIGH PERFORMANCE AIR FILTER FROM K&N. IF YOU WANT TO GET MORE PERFORMANCE FOR YOUR DOLLAR TRY IT! I HAVE FOUND PASSING ON THE HIGHWAY MUCH BETTER, AND MY FUEL MILEAGE SEEMS TO HAVE IMPROVED. I PLAN ON INSTALLING A HIGH FLOW EXHAUST NEXT YEAR. Similar Products Used: DODE CARAVAN |

Power rear windows that down Easy and fun to drive and park Rear seat folds away when not needed Made in Japan Quality read reviews on assembly. Looks pretty good for a van The interior is happy not depressing A great View in all seats Ls, Power Windows, remote door lock , cruise, ABS, CD ,Tinted windows, radio controls on steering wheel,,, nice Package
Weakness:
Nothing much ... maybe the interior is a little delicate and we will have to be more careful keeping it clean. It would of been handy if the rear back side vent windows were power ! Our first mini van,we love it, my wife and I have to fight who gets to take it to work. Our daughter 6 yrs loves the fact the dual sliding doors windows go down when we don't need the air on. The rear seat folds away or pops up when needed. Our friends have to slug there heavy seat to the basement, and never have it when they need it.I have no problem with comfort Ian a big guy lots of head room and fantastic visibility. The reports about a sulfur smell worried me after some peoples comments its not a big problem for us, we did have a faint smell ? I get the same smell from my brand new company a 2002 Cavalier.Just traded in my 1993 Camry the best car I ever had 230.000 Kms. still had origional rad, muffler, air, shocks no rust only changed tires and brakes when needed but my wife wanted a mini van. So we prefered a Japanese vehicle. The best deal would of been the GM Venture the newspapers a filled with sale ads ... until we read the real crash reports.I would of liked the Toyota but it was too money and pretty dull looking , my wife has a 2000 Mazda Protege and never a problem yet so we bought the MPV we are happy with our dealer and ther service dept. It's fun to drive easy to park we put on 3000 kms in the first month taking trips to the lake, puting our rack with our biclycles and going on picnics we never did this with our car,its more fun. Its a family van rather then a work horse. Similar Products Used: Tried my brother "in laws " New GM Safari drove like a truck but he needs the heavy towing for a pop up camper he has. Strength:
Good acceleration, smooth shifting, terrific handling and road feel. Extremely versatile interior. Comfortable. Very well equipped. Best-in-class reliability record. Runs perfectly on 87 octane gas. Very agile and easy to park and maneuver in the city.
Weakness:
None of any consequence. No hint of the sulfur odor others have complained of. This is a 2002 LX with the "Four Seasons" (towing) package and the Security Package (side air bags, traction control, fog lights, etc.). Tremendous mix of utility, space, build quality, performance and handling. Outstanding value in the current market. The MPV is bigger inside than it looks on the outside, and I'd be willing to bet that most minivan buyers have no real use for more space than this. Americans are just obsessed with size, so the "biggest" always has a marketing advantage over the "smallest," regardless of what people actually need. In this case, the smallest mini-van is the best-kept secret on the road. No other vehicle boasts this combination of car-like handling, agility, and maneuverability with tremendous cargo capacity and interior flexibity. Strength:
Great 3 liter v6, 5-speed automatic gearbox, fold-up 3rd row seat, 17' wheels, spoiler, sports car feeling, sports car look, well design and built the Japanese way.
Weakness:
Well unfortunately 2 things. The front seat are not Audi seats and therefore feels uncomfortable. Still need to figure out why, especially the lumber area gets some strain. Air conditioner does not work well in the back for the second and third row. It was hard to move from my Audi A4 to a minivan. But I was very impressed when I saw the MPV the first time, really well built and good quality materials. I am very happy with the PMV, it drives great. It is small enough to make me think I am still driving a German luxury sports car. Also big enough to drive the kids around. I seriously researched at least 5 minivans, test drove them all. I was so impressed with the MPV that I can not wait to see the Mazda 6. |

Strength:
Ok ride, handling.
Weakness:
The vehicle stinks of horrible horrible sulphur most of the time. IT IS REALLY BAD! Makes you feel like vomitting. The smell is coming from the exhaust of the vehicle. Mazda is refusing to do anything about it. I have made several attempts to get Mazda to resolve the problem with the nauseating sulphur smell that the vehicle is emitting almost 100% of the time. Mazda is being very stubborn and denying that it is a problem. I am now proceeding to take them to court and am confident I will win. Seeing that this problem is widespread (as the dealer also admitted), I am interested in getting as many contacts of others experiencing the same problem. Please e-mail me at leena_nayyar@hotmail.com if you are also having the same problem. Similar Products Used: Chevy Venture, Pontiac Montana |

Strength:
Looks; does not look like a minivan. Has regular car-like doors. Well made. Very reliable.
Weakness:
Poor gas mileage. 1996 Mazda MPV LX, 2 wheel drive. Bought in 1999 with 54,000 miles on it, after 1st owners 3 year lease ended. It currently has 126,000 miles. Overall this has been a very good vehicle. Seems to be very well made, fit and finish are excellent. It has been very reliable. At about 105,000 miles we spent about $1,000 to have the timing belt and water pump replaced, fuel injecters cleaned, cooling system flushed and other minor things. Since then we have only put front brake pads, new tires and a battery in it. I like the fact that it has normal car doors and not a sliding door like other mini vans. The new model does have the sliding door. It handles pretty good as long as you remember that it is a minivan. With 3,700 pounds you better not go around corners too fast! The brakes are very strong. The biggest weak point is gas mileage. I average about 18 mpg, which I consider too low for a minivan. Similar Products Used: This is the only minivan I have ever owned. |
