We were T-boned while going down the highway. Our wonderful Kia was totalled but every living sole in the car (including our dog)that day walked way from that accident because the Kia stood up to a 55 mph side impact. 90,000+ miles at the time of impact. We were all wearing seatbelt also. Don't wear your seatbelts because the law tells you to, but because this story could be you someday and if you don't, you may not be around to write your story here too.

Weakness:

Everything will break eventually. I felt that there were no real problems and mine was 4 years old when I bought it.

Wonderful mini van for anyone but I highly recommend it if you have children or pets. Especially if you get it with a DVD player for your children or yourself.

Strength:

Good performance at a low price. Other owners are satisfied with their Kia products, and family members have returned to Kia for second vehicle purchases.

Weakness:

Aft quarter windows only open 3 inches. Tailgate not power operated.

Good value for money spent. Bought this Sedona new in Richmond. Roomy, and well appointed. Excellent turning radius for ease of parking. Much better quality than domestic products. Less expensive than Honda or Toyota, but same features. Good air conditioning.

Acceleration!!!!! DVD system is a must with kids. Nothing like a long road trip and not one child asking, "how much longer?" Also the 3 zone climate control.

Weakness:

Fuel economy, cheap interior knobs and dash.

So far so good! I have read and heard mixed reviews on this vehicle and brand. We got a great deal and could not pass up on this one! We did pay the extra $1600.00 for the additional warranty which goes from 5 years or 60k miles up to the full 10 year 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty! Figured if the negative things we have heard were true, at least we would have a great warranty to back us up! I will keep updating as I have the vehicle longer.

Strength:

Good amount of room. Great acceleration. Rear windows go down half way. Rear air conditioning/heat controls. Rear seats fold down.

Weakness:

This doesn;t seem to be a cold weather car since most of the issues I have are during the winter. Living in the Northeast that's a major thing.

After a bad buying experience with the dealer, there are a number of negative things about this van.
1. Windshield is not sealed properly and whistles when on the highway.
2. Wears tires quickly-all tires wear evenly but I have to keep replacing them and they are always going low on tire pressure so the warning light is on a lot.
3. Switched into netural a few times on the highway on it's own.
4. The windsheild washer fluid is topped off but warning light continues to stay on.
5. Rear hatchback door is stuck between open and closed so I can't do either-the warning light is on and the warning sound keeps beeping whenever I am driving.
6. Slider door safety feature of locking in the open position doesn't work so, when on an incline, the door will slide shut.
7. Third time in two years that I have had to replace a headlight that burned out.
8. If the rear windows are down and the front ones up, the air pressure is terrible on the ears so I guess the van is not designed properly.
Before buying this, we had a 2003 Chrysler Town and Country and never had problems with it. I traded it in with a little over 100k on it and just wanted something different. I will probably go back to a Chrysler.

Engine power. Roominess.

Weakness:

Brakes went bad after one year; 22,000 miles of use and the dealership wants $550 to change out rotors and brakes. This problem seems to be rather common now that I have done some research. The 30K and 60k mile services are mandatory if you want to keep your "great warranty" and they are doozies at $650+ each. Also, the paint is really thin and scratches if the wind shifts directions.

Purchased this car after shopping around for a month. Looked at Honda and Dodge minivans comparatively. Liked the interior layout and responsive engine. Fuel economy not bad.
That being said the car has been falling apart after a year of ownership. Idler pully started screaming and had that replaced. Outside door moulding started curling and popping off; replaced. Had to replace rotors and brake pads at 22,000 miles, because the warranty only covers 12 months or 12,000 miles of wear, and the dealership wants $550 to change out the rotors and brakes. I have never had a cars breaks go so bad in such a short amount of time, and to top it off those are mostly highway miles not city stop-and-go!
Fuses keep blowing on the lighter and aux power outlets when I plug in my cell phone to charge..??
Adding insult to injury, I am closing in on the first 30,000 miles which means a hefty $650+ to do what?, change the fluids and do a once-over inspection.
I'm really wishing I had gone for that Honda or Dodge right about now.

Smooth ride, like that the middle seat can be moved left or right; that's about it!

Weakness:

See above, also not much room behind rear seats for traveling bags, tents, etc.

We like the van features just not the service and problems: bought it new in 2003, am now on 4th a/c compressor in 5 years!! Was told recently by service adviser at dealership that 02-05 models had problems w/the a/c system so they redesigned it for '06 and newer but are making no concessions for those who have the 05 or newer models with this problem. Also, one of the sliding door handles was pulled off by my then 8yr old daughter-I was told it would cost $300 to order & replace it w/same color handle (I opted for the $50 different color we can do it now handle). The paint is also peeling on the other door handles. Another problem is that when it rains the doors lock themselves at random?! I did call a Kia Customer Care Rep who told me she will talk to a factory warranty? or something person who can say if he knows of this problem with the a/c & he can decide if Kia will cover it since it is now out of warranty; my question with that is are they going to cover the cost every 2 years? We have never had this many problems with a vehicle. And, also d/n like that Kia does not offer a rental vehicle when yours in the shop waiting for parts or whatever! Not a good van, we will never buy another Kia again and would not recommend to any one else to buy.

Smooth ride that is nice and spacious.

Weakness:

In the shop for mostly electrical repairs ALL the time.

Bought the vehicle because it beat out the Honda Odyssey for safety. Appeared to have gotten a "good deal," as the loaded Sedona was less expensive than the base model Odyssey. Less than one year later and we average one repair/month (mostly electrical)! Yes it has a great warranty, but you need it! I'm glad we don't have to pay for the repairs, but it's still very inconvenient and getting old. They are not always able to "locate the problem" which is also quite frustrating.

I can't think of one thing that I love about this van, the TV/DVD player is great but that was an after market installation, maybe it's why it still works?

Weakness:

Kia in general

Here are a few items to consider before buying a Kia Sedona mini van. The first 12,000 miles were fine. Between 13-80,000 miles I have spent close to $4000 on non warranty related repair bills. This does not include routine maintenance.

Brakes, rotors, headliner, hardware inside, slider door hardware, a/c and lines 2 times plus recharged it, it's still not working by the way, heater lines 3 times and control knob won't work on 4, transmission, windshield wiper motor and constant issues with back wiper, alternator, passenger seat belt, tie rod ends, wheel bearings, gas tank pressure problems, multiple engine leaks, brought it to kia for several check engine light and airbag warning light issues. There have been other problems as well. This van is not dependable, Kia never has parts in stock, each visit requires 3-4 days to fix, plan on this van breaking down every 3-4 months after the first year. I live 30 miles away from the Kia dealership and was promised a rental car when repairs were being made to my van, this promise lasted the first year only. The warranty has major loop holes, the tech's can never duplicate the problems during the first visit, the paint starts rustingt after 5 years. Gas mileage stinks. I was told by the General Manager at Berline City that Kia won't look for problems, unless it's safety related when they are making a diagnosis, the customer has to identify a specific problem. I guess you should only buy their vehicles if you are ASE Certified and can tell Kia excatly what needs to be fixed. After I was told that by the manager it made me realize Kia is not about satisifying their customers and I can not be convinced to buy another Kia.

Weakness:

Unreasonable warranty.

The Kia warranty is filled with holes. I was driving my family on the New York State thruway in an ice storm when we started to experience car trouble. We had a grinding noise and got off to find that power steering fluid was low and we were leaking fluid. We quickly drove to the nearest auto shop that was open to have it repaired to the tune of $251. The power steering cooler needed to be replaced.

This product was under warranty, but Kia will not honor it because it was not done at a Kia dealer. Buyer beware: the NY State thruway is a "restricted road" not covered by Kia roadside service. Their tow trucks will not go on this road. On a previous occasion, I had to change a flat in a snowstorm on the thruway because Kia roadside would not come.

Even though I had my family in my car in an ice storm, Kia would have expected me to wait for a tow truck and go to a Kia dealer which would have been unable to help me on a late Saturday afternoon. We would have had to do two days of hotel stays to get the car fixed under warranty. The people at "customer care" kept referring me to page 10 of the warranty book. Read the fine print--there is no flexibility.

I would not buy a Kia product again due to this lack of help.
