Strength:
handling; safety; comfort; power; space; seating flexibility; rear cargo features; visibility; fit and finish; smooth transmission
Weakness:
an abysmal, static-ridden FM radio, as bad as the mid-90's Toyota radios; no delayed shutoff on interior lights--leave a door ajar and you'll have a dead battery 3 hours later (which I've done); oil changes are a real pain for a do-it-yourselfer--it's best to remove the right front wheel to get at the pan drain and filter; uses only 5W20 oil (if you go to quick-change places, they might not have it or might charge a premium for it); not exactly a Carrera in looks (that's the area where a van is a van, but this ain't a beauty contest, it's a ride) I'm quite biased in favor of minivans; I've owned 2 others and driven many. The Honda is a cut above any that I've tried, particularly in handling. Even with seven passengers it seems stable on the highway. It comes very close to a well-suspended sedan and has plenty of pep with the new 240 hp engine, pep that does not come at a premium cost in fuel--it equals or betters any of the other popular vans in mileage. Quality control is excellent--its only flaw upon delivery was uneven tire pressures, not a biggy. Comfort comes close to my wife's BMW (the most comfortable ride I've ever had)and interior conveniences are great--good cup holders, a solid swinging center console, lots of nooks and creannies for storage, the ingenious disappearing rear seat (very easy to handle), the flexible captain's seat arrangements in the second row (easily removed), and the large cargo capacity for perpetual remodelers like myself. We are bike tourers and need only remove one captain's seat and pull down the rear bench to be able to roll our bikes in with no alterations and bungee them to the neat cord fasteners. Even the windshield wipers, mirrors, and visual paths are well-conceived. The gas mileage is quite variable (of course, so is the gas around here)--it's ranged from 15.6 mpg in crowded town traffic to 30.1 mpg during long trips on rural highways. Typical freeway mileage on long hauls is 23 to 26 mpg, but I don't have a heavy foot. No problem pulling my 16' fishing boat. A caution--it will not accept cheap trailer hitches--don't try to put on a Cars-R-Us 1500-lb. do-it-yourself job. Unless someone figures out how to top this one I can't imagine changing brands for a while. I'd give it a 5, but I've driven that BMW--now that's a 5. I think 4 is the best a van can do, and the Honda does it. Readers Watch out. Honda is missleading people. lucsch, Ironman5729, Chin Gong, Gopilot, Pablo, whitec42, John, Len, MacBethNY, Gary ,Elizabeth, gopilot, Joe and few other nicknames are the same person. He or she is Honda employee (posts coming from the same IP#). And you can trace his or her IP# to Torrance,CA , Guess where the American Honda HQ is? What is Honda trying to achive by this? It is so obvious it's posted by the same person.Just look at these positive fake posts. Every time someone posts negative review about Honda Product, within hours this person fills that review board with positive reviews and attack negative poster. What is interesting it works like that only during the week. On the weekends these positive reviews stop. I guess Honda person doesnt work weekends. This goes not just for Odyssey but other Honda products as well(just look at the PILOT). Also this Honda employee posts reviews on other automakers products putting them down. You can see his posts on Toyota or Chrysler boards. ASK YOURSELF A QUESTION> WHY HONDA KEEPS THIS POSTING PERSON ON THE PAYROLL? HONDA IS FIXING REVIEWS OF HONDA PRODUCTS ASS WELL THE PRODUCTS OF OTHER AUTOMAKERS. |

Transmission, ignition switch(the van loss all power in the middle of driving, FREEWAY, VERY scary for wife and kids) The transmission were out last weekend. It's shifting real funny. Kind of like jerking when it down/up shift. The dealer did not want to admit the problem at first, after I have talk to the shop foreman. He tested, and told me that the transmission is broken. The honda want me to pay $2000 for replacing a transmission. Which sounds like a pretty good deal. But I had search over the internet for similiar problem, I was SHOCKING to find out that HONDA give all the 2000 and 2001 HONDA odyssey 100,000 miles warranty. Not 1999, This is the same transmission on the 2000. And they all have problems. BUt mine will bot be covered. This is totally sucks. I call the North American Honda for the answer. Customer service girl told me that is cooperat decision. ANd no matter how I try to explain to her that this is the same kind of transmssion. She won't help at all. BAD NEWS for 99 Odyssey owners!! |

Weakness:
A Mechanical Nightmare The transmission went bad after I owned the van for 50 000 miles. Rebuilt and then went bad again. BTW rebuilt cost me $6 000. Very expensive parts for this van. The air conditioning was poor. First the compressor went and then a major leak in the system (inside the dash), again lots of money. Brakes went out at 60,000 miles. This was 800 dollars to fix. Windshield wiper motor died at 70,000 miles. This little gadget costs 500 dollars to replace. Interior wears easily. After owning a 1994 Civic, I cannot believe these cars were made by the same company! The 1994 was a wonderful car, but to anyone shopping on a limited budget, please DO NOT buy a this minivan. You will more than likely regret it. Similar Products Used: Civic |

Honda's dependability. LARGE mini-van. Love the climate control! Resale value is unbelievably high--compare it to other minivans (that cost more new)!
Weakness:
Couldn't negotiate the buying price. Had to order and wait 3 months to get it. This is a great van. I have absolutely no complaints at all. I love Don Ayres service. I have had all recommended service done on it at Don Ayres. At 42,500 miles, I still have the original brakes and tires. I have had NO repairs at all (other than some body work when my hubby hit two deer). Similar Products Used: 1978 Honda Civic (how Honda has improved!), 1991 Honda Civic, 1998 Honda Civic LX |

Odyssey EX
Strength:
This vehicle is like a living room on wheels and can do practically anything I need done.
Weakness:
Obviously the transmission. I have found the sliding doors overly temperamental as well. Until Honda perfects these aspects, I can no longer recommend this vehicle. I bought my 99 Odyssey EX three years ago and have put 85,000 mostly wide open highway miles on it. In spite of numerous recalls, I have enjoyed the vehicle immensely and was thinking of buying a new model next year. That was until last week when my Malfunction Indicator and Traction Control lights suddenly came on while I was driving on the freeway. I took it in for service and was informed that I need a new transmission to the tune of $5588. Having always had the services done on a timely basis at the intervals recommended in the manual and which often included an inspection of the automatic transmission, I simply cannot see a reason for this failure other than factory defect. Strength:
The 3rd row of seats folding into the floor.
Weakness:
The transmission, and I have already had two problems with my sliding doors. My 2001 Odyssey has only 38,000 miles on it and has been sitting at the dealer for the last 3 weeks with a broken transmission. Fortunately, we purchased an extended warranty and will only be responsible for $100 of this $5,000 repair. UNFORTUNATELY, the part is BACKORDERED indefinitely and we have no idea how much longer it will take for the repair. We had to contact a lawyer to force the dealer to provide us with a minivan as the loaner rather than the Civic. I love my substitue Windstar. You can bet I will be trading in my Honda if I ever get it back. American Honda has been horrible to deal with. I will never purchase a Honda again. Similar Products Used: Dodge Caravan |

Weakness:
Dealer, quality The car have some tolerable noises in the doors mainly. The back doors and seats squeaks a lot. The main attraction!, water on the passenger side floor. I get the car to the dealer, the first time they said the car was OK and there was nothing to do. One week later a storm came down and, guess what? Yes water came in again, but this time it was a pool. By now the car is at the dealers workshop.I hear and read that is a recurrent problem with seals on this car. Wait a minute I almost forgot about it, the electric motor of the drivers windows makes a big "clunk!" noise when you get it down. The dealer promises to change it... when they have the part in stock. It's a nice looking car. It's not worth the money though. Has far too many problems. Similar Products Used: Windstar |
