Strength:

Looks and Comfort

Weakness:

Reliability

I factiry ordered this base Caravan SE with the 3.3 V6 engine, I drove it 600 miles so far and I had to bring it back for a leaking power steering line, took 2 weeks for the part come in. I finally got the van back and now I have to bring it back for a knocking noise comming from the front end.

I have owned Chrysler Products since 1974. Most of my experiences are good. My only problem was with a 1996 Dodge Intrepid. A/C went out at 50000/ 3 water pumps every 30000. I have no complaints about the Caravan.

Dealership motor quality brakes

This is the worst van we have every owned. I began returning the van to the dealer days after the purchase(which they have no record of), because of a tapping sound in the motor. The motor blew at 45000 miles and the dealer refused to look at it. We have replaced the serpintine belt five times this year. The brakes are replaced every 3-6 months. We are now in the market for a new car and it won't be a Dodge.

Please see email below: The company you work for is a company which pays for additional repairs to vehicles in Canada supposedly covered under "extended warranties". Obviously, as with any expense, your company, as with any company trying to cut costs would try and justify those expenditures. I feel withou pejudice that you are trying to do that. However, you seem to be trying to defend the transmission failures in the Dodge Caravan. I say to you that I proved in a CAMVAP hearing that there was failure in the transmission in my 1999 Dodge Caravan and was successful in having a buy back of my vehicle from Chrysler Canada. I've never posted before your email of tonight. However, I think based on your email, I feel I should let others know of my success and how the hearing went. Wow! Can you imagine the claims that will probably have to be paid out just through people making sure that their transmissions are checked each time they have an issue with their transmissio Appearantly, according to the Chrysler representative, I should have made the dealership aware of the default in my transmission to avoid the problem. How could I if I didn't know the problem existed? I had the vechile in for it's regular maintenance check ups and would have thought that my transmission would have been something my dealer checked for me. If that is the case, consumers better be aware that they should have their transmissions checked. I can only assume that your company should be prepared to pay out additonal repairs for those tramsmissions checked and found to have problems. Oh Oh! I wonder what will be more expensive? You see J.R. I don't buy the wheel spinning and neither did the arbitrator. If that is the case, why would there be A: a pending class action law suit for the same issue in the United States? B:Why is it that states such as California, Florida, South Carolina have same issues.? and I do believe they have very little to no snow in these states. The last I heard Minivans have not been used in drag racing along Canadian city streets. C: If that being the case, how did I win my case? I trust the warranty claims will not get too high for your company? Hopefully, your company will be able to maintain the warranty claims for Chrysler minivans. By the way, which company do you represent???? This email will be posted. Cheers Warranty J.R: -----Original Message----- From: John R To: pprice@nfld.com Date: Friday, January 17, 2003 8:27 PM Subject: Chrysler transmission >I work for an extended warranty company in Canada so I am >very familiar with this common failure arising from the differential pinion >shaft retainer pin letting go and allowing the pinion shaft to move around >and finally exit the tranmission case.First let me confirm the majority of >the failures that launch the differential pinion shaft thru transmission >case are a result of wheel spin. The way we determine if it is or if it is >not, would be to have the differential part of transmission removed. If the >differential pinion shaft is scored heavily or even has metal transfer seen >on it, as well if the spider gears that ride on either end of this pinion >shaft have scoring or metal transfer, this would show excessive rotational >speed. This causes fluid that is supposed to be inbetween spider gear and >differential pinion shaft,to be thrown out and allowing metal to metal >contact, thus causing each to weld slightly to each other. This causes stress >to the differential retainer pin( weak point of transmission) that secures >pinion shaft to the carrier it rides into to actually break. Our regular >route of repairs is to have a transmission rebuilder to rebuild >transmission.Ask them if they would be welding this pinion retainer pin so >that it will never break and allow differential pinion shaft to launch thru >transmission case ever again. > > > >

1. The 3.3 engine is the best of the lot. 2. Good handling/Brakes 3. Roomy 4. '95 had a good transmission.

Weakness:

Air conditioner.

Bought this van brand new.I do not take care of any vehicle I own meaning routine oil changes,tune-ups,etc..My wife and I have heaped 160,000 miles of pure abuse upon this vehicle. At 130,000 miles I had to fix the air conditioner. The sliding door needs to be adjusted, but I'm not complaning about that considering this vehicle was used by us as a family and soccer bus vehicle.I figure if I were that door with the amount of as WHAMS as it's taken I would need adjusted too. Starter was replaced at 150,000 but I consider that normal wear on any vehicle. I would buy another!

Strength:

Lots of room up front. Rains inside the van when its raining outside. Check engine light works well (It never turns off no matter what the mechanic does).

Weakness:

No leg space in the back seats. Poor transmission. Poor engine reliability. Putting our mechanic's kids through college.

Before we bought our 1998 Dodge Caravan we felt we did our homework in researching as to who made the best minivan. All consumer reports pointed us toward the Caravan. But most consumer reports are based on the first 3 months of ownership. Two thousand miles after the warranty expired, the tranmission went. We wrote letters to no avail to Dodge and paid to have our transmission rebuilt. Now here we are just one year later and the #1 cylinder has just 60 lbs compression. This will cost approx. $2000 to repair. Dodge needs to either build cars that can last 65000 miles or give warranties that can.

Strength:

looks great , very comfortable seats. great styling.

Weakness:

would make a great yard ornament. Not dependable at all. I spend $5,200 in repaires the six m onths I owned it. I will never own anything made by Dodge again.

I purchased the top of the line ES model with the quad seats and rear air. I van instantly started to have a lifter tick that the dealer said was normal and should be ignored. The van did fine untill I took it to Topeka, Ks. from Des Moine, Ia and back. After that trip the would shake when you would accelerate. It was in the shop for a week and had to have new ball joint, tie-rod ends and cv shafts. One month to the day of getting it out of the shop, the cv shaft on the driver side exploded in heavy traffic. It went back into the shop to be replaced. The second on lasted only one week before exploding in a rain storm in traffic. This time the dealer replaced the cv shaft and all of the motor mounts stating that that was the reson for the cv failure. The van didn't stear right after that and it wore out new tire in about a month. The dealer said that everything was fine. One month after the third replacement of the cv's, the driver shaft exploded again. It pulled out of the transmisson and slammed against the tranny knocking a hole in the tranny. The dealer would replace the cvshaft under warrantly but refused to touch the tranny that the shaft damaged. I contacted Dodge and was basically told that I wa sout of luck. I ended up junking the van and am thinking of suing the dealer to get all of my money back. The van had 35,000 miles when it was junked and 30,000 miles when purchased. I purchased a 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis LS and just love it. No major problems at all. Please see my review on that car.
