What's New for 2010
The 2010 Volkswagen Passat receives VW's DSG dual-clutch automated manual transmission in place of the old conventional automatic. It also gets a new multifunction steering wheel, a new radio, standard Bluetooth connectivity and optional 18-inch wheels.

On the road, the 2010 Passat hits the perfect blend of reassuring handling, a supple ride, and absolute composure at above-legal cruising speeds. The interior is arguably the nicest in this class, boasting high-quality materials and a classy look. Another feature is the available wagon version, a welcome alternative to the oversize SUV.

The front-wheel-drive 2010 Volkswagen Passat is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pumps out 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. The only available transmission is VW's responsive DSG, a six-speed, dual-clutch automated manual.

Fuel economy is quite good given the Passat's peppy performance. EPA estimates stand at 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.

The 2010 Volkswagen Passat is available as a midsize sedan or wagon. Both body styles come in Komfort trim only. Standard equipment on the sedan includes 17-inch alloy wheels, heated windshield washer nozzles, foglights, a sunroof, air-conditioning, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, leatherette vinyl upholstery, a power driver seat, heated front seats, Bluetooth and an eight-speaker sound system with an in-dash six-CD changer, an auxiliary audio jack and satellite radio.

Options include 18-inch alloy wheels, a variety of exterior appearance packages (sedan only), an iPod adapter (replaces the standard aux jack) and a hard-drive-based touchscreen navigation system with a USB port, an iPod interface and 20GB available for digital music storage.

Strength:

Good fuel economy, comfortable, feels and drives way more expensive than it is, high-quality interior, solid throughout. I bought this as an economical commuter car but found that the more I drive it the more I like it.

Weakness:

Cup holders just terrible, manual seat adjustments need you to have rubber arms (get power).

I'm a bit mystified by several hugely negative reports on the Passat posted at this site. I've had mine for almost 4 years and driven 110K km (68K mi) with zero, I mean zero problems. Sure, the cupholders suck and well...ok, there is some brake dust and don't forget the biggie - some rubber bits on the key fob remote are showing signs of wear. That's it - original tires (although pretty marginal now), absolutely no squeaks or rattles, interior shows no appreciable signs of wear, exterior paint still looks good, a set of brake pads 10K ago but still have the original rotors. I don't baby the car and drive as enthusiastically as a 4-banger w/auto allows. Yet I see postings describing Passats with bits falling off, armies of electrical gremlins, routine mechanical failures, "Lemon Law" claims and on and on. Maybe I've been lucky (and I'm not doubting anyone) but in these days of highly automated manufacturing and assembly it's difficult to see how there can be such a huge disparity in quality between seemingly identical cars. Does LADA make a Passat?

I LOVE THIS CAR!!! The performance of a high end German car, a touch of luxury, wrapped in a value package! The 8 cyl. propels this like a rocket. It will blow away any Audi A6, C class Benz or 500 series Beamer. I picked this car instead of a new A6, which felt like a Buick after driving the W8!

Strength:

Beautiful car, inside and out! Sporty yet roomy. This car has a smooth ride, just flies on the highway. Feels more like a sports car than a "family sedan" although the kids and the dog fit quite nicely .

Weakness:

The check engine light. Usually resolved by clicking the gas cap 3 times after filling.

I LOVE THIS CAR!! I did buy it used for an excellent price...the salesman misquoted the selling price to my advantage. Hey, I am not complaining. This is the second VW I have owned and can honestly say I will NEVER go to another manufacturer. As long as you make sure to click the gas cap 3 times after filling the tank I have never had a problem w/ either of my VW's. I highly recommend the V6 model. I also have the tip tronic transmission, which I don't use a lot because of heavy commuter traffic but given the opportunity of the wide open road it is a nice feature to have. With all of the options you can't ask for anything more in this vehicle. Great ride, nice & smooth, plenty of pick up. Even the stock Mongoose stereo system is much better than average.

Weakness:

Dealerships are AWFUL!!! They actually will cause more damage to your car, than repair. If you are not getting warranty work done, don't drive near the dealarship. Many Audi dealars are willing to service these cars

My Passat has been a wonderful car. I have 49,000 miles, and have had no real problems. I have the 1.8 with a 5 speed. This appears to be the most reliable combination. I also highly recommned a chip, eibach springs, bilstein shocks and upgraded tires. This car has great potiental. I average 27.5 MPG with mixed driving, and well over 32 on the highway. The car is obviously nice looking, but with it lowered a little and the new wheels, it's great.

Strength:

German made car. Very solid.

Weakness:

Need Premium Gasoline. Trade in value is terrible after a year. Prob. will not buy another one.

Have bought this car for a year. Got hit from behind 3 months after having the car. Love the free maintenance for the first few year. Have replaced fog lamp ($200), rubber in truck(free), glove box lock(free). It somehow has a noise near the Sunroof. Always foggy on windshield if AC is off. By the way, the AC comes slower than other cars. Hate the light leather interior and the mechanic left some oil on, cannot get rid of for no reasons.

It rides very smooth. Turbo-charger lets you roll.

Weakness:

Gas Tank

We have enjoyed this car very much. It rides very smooth. The one thing I do not like about it is the gas tank is on the passenger side instead of the driver side so the driver has to walk around. Besides that I LOVE IT!! P.S. Blue light up dash is cool to!!

Strength:

Looks.

Weakness:

Seat comfort, loose trim, transmission, engine response lag.

A nice looking car, but quirky. Fronts seats are not comfortable, trim is starting to fall off/come loose, nuisance rattle in glove box area that the dealer "can't hear". Around town, the transmission is always hunting for the right gear -- not acceptable in today's auto world. Irritatingly long acceleration delay when pulling out into traffic.

Strength:

The car is beautiful and it has a nice ride, when the engine is working.

Weakness:

Stay clear of the turbo engine, it's a piece of crap, and sometimes it feels like it's in the wrong gear, or the turbo isn't working or something. So sometimes when you're expecting 150 horsepower, it feels like 50. If you must get this car, get the V6 or W8

The Passat plain and simple is an annoying car. I think it's beautiful, and the ride is nice, but it just all falls apart from there... literally. Within 3 months the cupholder got stuck, and luckily for newer owners they've changed the design. There's a center armrest that literally disintegrated and fell apart within 6 months. The floormat wore out after about 10000 miles. However, that's not the worst of it. That would be the god-awful VW service centers. I've moved around some, so I've gone to no less than 4 service centers. They ALL have issues. Not only is the customer service appaling, but the quality of the work is pathetic. I've had to take my car back more than once, because they couldn't get simple things right like replacing my tires. The idiots ended up replacing my brand new spare with a new tire. You get the point...

Weakness:

Expensive parts. Higher than average basic maintance

I can't stand hearing people complain about vw. "vw are the most unreliable cars ever made". Things like this show that people have no idea about vw cars and they don't know what there talking about. Just so this person knows The vw jetta was rated in the top 10 most reliable cars for the year 2002. I own a 95 b4 passat, GLX model. Seats are great and as long as you take car of it the thing will last forever. I haven't had any expensive part orders even though the parts run high in price. The most reasons why people have these problems is because volkswagons are ment to be drivin at high rpm's and long distant's like highway miles.

Reliability.

This car behaved nicely for the first year. As soon as the comprehensive warranty expired, everything started to happen. This car gets serviced regularly, only has 13000 miles on it after 2 1/2 years, and yet it periodically needs major and costly repairs. Will never buy another VW again.
