Strength:

It gains speed and holds it in a steady fashion not in jumps and spurts. Wonderful sound system. The back seats come down easily and I've often used this to transport canvases.

Weakness:

Air conditioning could be a bit stronger

I love this car and really enjoy driving it. I feel safe and secure and am thankful for it's predictability. Unlike some of the other reviewers I've had no trouble with it and like every other car it's subject to wear and tear. While not overly large the trunk space was all I needed for a 3 week trip away, bags, tents sleep mats etc. It's a great way to view the landscape, that is if there is one to see and so my recent journey through the southwest was even more spectacular than it otherwise would have been. It took to the hills with gusto and is great on curves.

Strength:

Headroom, my son is 6'4" and there is plenty. When working right, car will cruise at over 100 mph on the interstate, fuel economy

Weakness:

Horrible electrical system, eats tires, gel battery is outrageous, interior finish is poor.

I leased the car on a five year lease. That was my first mistake other than buying the car, of course. The lease leaves you so upside down that even if you want to get rid of the car you are stuck. The keys fall apart and to get it rekeyed is about four hundred dollars. The electrical system constantly malfunctions so the the doorlocks starting popping up and down without warning or the alarm goes off for no reason. The interior finish wears off and the key sometimes will not crank the car (mine is taped together). The only price for service the dealer knows is $900 dollars. Its a VW not a Mercedes Best advice I can give is don't buy one.

Good Looking, more room in trunk than I thought, easy to drive and park.

Weakness:

See above - how sad for all of us who loved its looks.

I was so excited to get this car, mostly because of its looks. Not a good indicator to go by. Constantly gets stuck in park, passenger side door doesn't lock, the sunroof leaks terribly, everything rattles, I can't turn the thing on half the time because the key won't turn. It is such a disappointment because I had such high hopes. The looks definitely don't match the reliability. I am almost afraid to drive it at night or on a long trip. My check engine light just came too! Also, the car smells horrible inside.. maybe it's cheap leather.

Great gas milage, awesome monsoon sound system ,looks cool, when turbo kicks in the car can go really fast

Weakness:

see review summary plus expensive to repair

I have had this car for about 3 years and i cant remember a time when something wasnt wrong with it. The check engine light and the airbag light always turn on for no reason, it shakes and makes alot of noise, the interior is peeling and the sunroof doesnt work properly. The trunk latch has broken three times, the sunroof doesnt even work properly sometimes you have to open it manualy. The air conditioner doest always work, and the seatbelt latch has broken on both the driver and the passenger sides. The backseat has enough room withwise to fit 3 small adults, but the headroom in the back seat is ridiculous, you bump your head on every turn. the drivers side door lock is broken which causes the car to make alot of noise. the newest problem is that everytime i start my car now i have to pump the brake for five minutes just to get it out of park. the turbo only works when the airconditioner is off, otherwise the car accelerates slowly. very disapointing for my first car, i cant wait to trade it in.

Good in snow, looks cute, great on gas, a good heater and Air conditioner.

Weakness:

Motor is too weak. Battery should be bigger.

I bought the car without many of the special features like cruise control and automatic windows. But with the few electrical gadgets I have, it seems to draw a lot of battery power. I've had to replace the battery, which was less than a year old. And I noticed that it's starting to crank over a little harder like it was doing just before I changed the battery. I don't like the fact that at 60 mph, the RPM's are already at 3. And if I need to pass someone and I have the AC on, I got to shut it off to get power from the motor.

not sure if I can depend on this car on the freeway

I bought this 2000 bug from my neighbor a little over a month ago and already the air bag light is on. When it came on the car didn't want to start, It took several attempts to finally get it started. I called our local vw dealership and asked if this is something common with the newer bugs and he said it was very unusual and that I needed to bring it in. I asked if he knew what could cause the problem and he replied very rudely about as well as I could tell what color shirt he was wearing. the car only has 51000 miles on it. After reading these reviews I have decided not to take it in and just let it be. Now the check engine light is on however I refuse to take it to a dealership to get fixed after reading the horror stories of all the run around from mechanics and lots of money later only to have it happen again.

Strength:

Comfortable Handles well for a compact car Good gas mileage Better than what I was driving before

Weakness:

Squeeking chasis. Bad original Goodyear tires. Small things are breaking, like the e-brake button. Power windows work horribly, my driverside goes up 3/4 of the way and then goes right back down somethimes. Needs a 6th gear to lower the revs on the highway Hatch release doesn't work on the key or on the door.

The check engine light goes on for everything...including things that aren't the engine. I use my mechanic's scan tool when it pops up so I don't have to pay, but VW charges a lot of money to do that. The chasis squeeks and rattles are driving me nuts. I hate how much noise this thing puts off. The engine is bearable, but it needs some more power in the 2000-3500RPM range. This car like other VWs, over revs on the highway. 3-4k RPMs in 5th gear at 60mph is too high. My Camaro in 5th gear runs at 1100rpms. Thank god for the 4 year 80k mile warranty that I bought for 1000. I already have about 1300 worth of repairs waiting to be performed. I'm on year 1, and at mile 43000.
