EVERYTHING Bought the car used, the very next day had problems with the transmission and had to take it back. They were "fixing" it for two weeks after I took it back. Went to pick it up, two weeks later, on the drive home, I had to turn around and take it right back, the AC went out. Had enough, owned the car for 2 weeks and was only able to drive it for one day without a problem. Took it right back the same day the AC went out and LEFT it there! Got another car all together. Tires-these vehicles seem to have a issue with even the smallest pothole as well as leaking rims (not covered). Constant problems with carbon build up (not covered by warranty. Glow plug issues (covered). Bad, Bad, Bad, I started out loving this car but then, after 30K, it went bad. |

See review above! I bought a used 2003 VW Beetle soft top convertable a couple weeks ago from Ed Bozarth Chevrolet. My wife was driving with our two kids in the car when the passenger window literally imploded (all over my kids) as she was turning a corner - no glass shards larger than 1/4". She said she heard nothing hit the window like a rock or something prior to the implosion. I assume if a rock was kicked up, or even thrown at the window, it would star and perhaps crack, but certainly not implode - especially since this is supposed to be safety glass. We found that the sensor that automatically drops and raises the window when you open and close the door (so the window doesn't get stuck and wedged outside the soft top) was not working. Vehicle still has 7 months left on the manufacturer's warranty. Bozarth referred us to McDonald Automotive - VW. The Service Manager there said he spoke to the area VW rep and because they never saw a window implode like this, it must've been hit by something and therefore, it should be considered an insurance claim issue and not covered by warranty. I am convinced this is a manufacturer defect and should be repaired (including the window) under warranty. As others have said, it's probably more a problem with the dealerships than the vehicle itself! |

Strength:
Fuel efficiency, it fits anywhere, roomy interior.
Weakness:
parts and services can be expensive after warranty expires. I love my car. It is cute, small, and saves me a lot on fuel. I have a diesel engine and I spend about $80-100/month. The warranty, while it lasted, was great. Like all things, not everything is perfect. I have had problems with my drivers side window twice. The first time it was covered under warranty, but now that I don't have warranty, they charged $300 to fix it. I would still recommend this car to anyone. |

Fuel is a major biggie in these days of high price, the boots dodgy, and the engine is to slow if you get the 1.6 I wanted this car for so long since they were designed, so I finally could afford one with a little bit of help from my dad, anyway got it brand new and was so cheap for english cars, The first thing I noticed was the body was tough to get your head round im always parking 5 foot to far out, the trunk is tiny onlt good for three bags, the trunk doesnt shut properly and now has become warped, I have a strange problem with the neutral gear it shudders to much, and the fuel consumption is crap, if you live in the UK do not buy one unless your rich, they are far to expensive to run and miles per galon compared to a corsa or fiesta are poor |

VW New Beetle GLS
Strength:
Cute, leather interior, heated seats, spacious. I love the way it looks!
Weakness:
Too many problems and too expensive to maintain. I love and hate this car at the same time. It is so cute and luxirious, but I must say the VW cars made before 1996 were much better with no problems at all. I love it because it is so cute, and its all lether, with heated seats. the older beetles years and years ago were made very good, and people could drive them for years with no problems, I dont know what was done wrong with the ones. I dont know where to start with listing the problems I had had with it in the past year. First most important thing is that this car burns oil like crazy. I have to check the oil level every thousand miles on it, and the car only has 63,000 miles, so its not like its been driven too much. And when I took it to the dealership, they have said that they are made like that, to burn certain amount of oil. What? How can they be build like that? And I check and change oil regularly, and couple of weeks ago, after passing 1000 miles, the car didnt even have a drop of oil in it. It is not leaking anywhere, so I have no idea why. And as everyone else mentioned with the windows, my goodness. In less than a year, I had work done on the windows or the switches like 5 times. The passenger window just dropped one day, and I could not get it up without going to dealership, who said it will cost about $250 to fix. The switches keep braking, I have replaced 3. And both the driver side and the passenger have been stuck. Another issue, is the gas tank switch does not work, so I have to open my gas tank from my the inside of my trunk. Tires were not bad, I had them replaced at 50,000 miles. The clock and inside temperature does not work, it just got stuck, so they told me $300 for parts non including labor. Brakes - Front breakes were replaced at 40,000 miles, too soon to have all of it replaced, not just the break pads. Car Starter - my car was not starting at all last month, and it turns out to be starter, costing $600 to fix, with parts and labor. I have not had door or sunroof problems, at least not yet, hopefully not. another thing, I dont know what is causing this, but it just makes some noise when I have the car in neutral. |

New Beetle GLE (Turbo)
Strength:
German design, solid construction; leather seats in this model very high quality and very durable; Turbo is enormous fun to drive
Weakness:
Poor quality assurance on Mexican assembly line, parts and labor more expensive than for non-European cars; mileage lower than in lighter cars (but who'd trade better mileage for poorer crash resistance?); the infamous cup holder placement (but that's saved me a lot of money by forcing me to go with grandes rather than ventis at Starbucks); lack of space under hood means expensive headlight bulb replacements; mediocre mileage for a small car because of solid construction No major problems, several minor ones (gas cover door latch solenoid, driver's side window, flow valve failure) in first year, all covered under warranty. About to have third belly pan replacement (but that was my fault). Driver's side door latch button fails to retract ~half of the times I use the remote to lock it. Hatch solenoid lacks enough oomph fully to release the latch in cold weather. I think many of the complaints here have been more about dealerships than the car itself. Buyers should be aware that labor and parts will always be higher at dealerships for niche-market Eurocars than at Toyota or Ford dealers. By and large, the parts are better, though. So far, much cheaper to maintain than a Volvo --- ad much more fun to drive. In 5.5 years, no problems with: electrical system, stereo, armrest, windows falling down, hatch closing (takes only a feather-light touch, as do doors). Similar Products Used: 1985 Volvo 740 Turbo |

The worst cupholders imaginable...but who cares? I love this car! I bought my 1999 silver bug one year ago. I have encountered 0 problems with this care and love it to death. Even though it is almost 6 years old, it looks new and drives like a dream! I have no complaints and the fit and finish are excellent. Additionally, it is the only car I have ever had that, when I look at it, it makes me smile. My dealer is courteous, professional and, so far, cheap. Besides routine maintenance, I have done nothing except keep it clean and have loads of fun driving it. Similar Products Used: Toyota and Jeeps are all I have ever driven until now!!!! |

Unreliable, Unreliable. Did I say unreliable? What a piece of junk--I traded it in three months ago for a great Mazda6s. At first the thing was alluring due to it's nice styling and good body integrity, but here is a list of things that happened (some in, some out, of warranty): Door not in allignment at delivery -Clutch rattling at 2K -New Instrument cluster at 4K -Window falls off frame at 12K -Sunroof trim falls off at 13K. -Engine Belly pan relpaced at 19K and 58K -Interior plastic begins exfoliating at 20K -New tires needed at 24K (way to early). -Rear (?) brake job at 30K. -Arm rest colapses at 34K. -Sunroof moves to "vent" on its own with no warning at 36k -Transmission goes out at 45K--needed new transmission and clutch. Warranty paid for part of it, but still had to come up with $800 I have had my Mazda6s (2004) for almost for months and not a single problem! |
